Lake Conroe manners

Dogs on boats and docks: Lake Conroe manners before Memorial Day

Every spring the families in Montgomery, Conroe, Willis and along the Lake Conroe shore ask the same question: can the dog come on the boat? The answer is yes, if the dog was trained for it in March and April rather than introduced to it on a holiday weekend with twelve people aboard.

What changes

A dock has no fence, a boat has no floor the dog trusts, and the water is the biggest distraction it has met.

A dog on a dock is a dog three feet from deep water with boats, jet skis and kids jumping in, and no fence between it and any of them. Labs and doodles want in; heelers bark at the wakes; small dogs get knocked off by the wash. The boat is stranger still: a deck that moves under the paws, an engine that vibrates, and nothing that feels like ground. Most first trips end with a dog panting in the bow and an owner holding its collar.

The water itself is the biggest problem and the biggest reward. A dog that swims for fun will leave the boat when it sees something interesting, and a dog that cannot be called out of the water will eventually be exhausted a hundred yards from the dock. Whatever the breed, the water recall is the skill that matters most, and the one nobody builds until it is needed.

  • Jumping off the dock uninvited
  • Barking at wakes and jet skis
  • Panting and pacing on a moving deck
  • No recall once wet

March to May

Ten weeks, one skill a week: dock, life jacket, boat at the dock, boat moving, then the recall from the water.

Start in March on the dock with a leash and a sit-stay: one minute, then five, then while a neighbor's boat idles past. Fit the life jacket at home first and feed the dog in it, so it means good things before it means water. Week three the boat is tied up and the dog boards, sits on a mat in a fixed spot, and gets off, twenty times over a weekend, with no engine. Week four the engine runs at the dock while the dog holds the mat.

By week five you are moving, slowly, for ten minutes, the dog on its mat and on a leash clipped to something solid. Add time and speed over the next three weeks. The water recall runs alongside, on a long line from the shallows: the dog goes in, you call, you reel, you reward. When the dog turns on the first call in the shallows, move to the swim platform with the line still on. Only after a month of clean recalls does the line come off, and never in a busy channel.

1

Weeks 1 to 2: leashed sit-stay on the dock, one minute to ten, boats passing

2

Week 2: life jacket worn at home during meals

3

Week 3: on and off the tied-up boat, mat in a fixed spot, no engine

4

Week 4: engine running at the dock; the dog holds the mat

5

Weeks 5 to 8: short slow trips, leash clipped in, time and speed added

6

Weeks 3 to 10: water recall on a long line from the shallows, then the swim platform

Water safety

The life jacket stays on, the reedy bank at dusk belongs to the alligators, and the pool at home needs the same exit drill.

A life jacket with a handle is not optional on the boat, even for a Lab, because a tired dog in a wake cannot climb a swim platform and you cannot lift sixty wet pounds by the collar. Teach the dog where the platform is by putting it in from there and calling it out to there, until it swims for it on its own. Alligators are native across southeast Texas and Lake Conroe's coves are inside their range; Texas Parks and Wildlife publishes the guidance, and dogs at the water's edge at dusk are the classic risk. Swim from the boat or the dock, not the bank.

Nearly every backyard on the lake has a pool, and a pool is the same problem in a smaller box: a dog that falls in needs to know where the steps are. Run the exit drill in your own pool in April, before the lake. Check the National Weather Service forecast before any trip from June onward; summer storms on the lake build fast, and a dog that has never heard thunder on a moving boat should not be aboard when it does. Heat is the other limit: a shaded spot, fresh water and trips before noon.

  • Handle life jacket on, every trip
  • Exit drill at the platform and the pool steps
  • Open water, not the reedy bank, and never at dusk
  • Forecast checked; shade and water aboard

When to get help

A dog that will not board, cannot be called from the water or fights the life jacket needs the work done before the season.

Some dogs shut down on a moving deck and no amount of treats gets them past it. Some will not come out of the water for anything and have already been fished out by a stranger's boat. Some bark at every wake until nobody wants them aboard. If the plan stalls in week four or the recall is not there by May, the season is better spent fixing it than managing it.

Our three-week Platinum Board & Train, $3,750, includes field trips into real public places and the lake is one of them, so water recall and dock manners get built by our trainers on a long line, then handed to you in the go-home session and the unlimited private lessons that follow. Families in Conroe and Montgomery are about 45 to 55 minutes from the training home in Cypress outside rush hour, and the $250 transport option brings the first lesson to your dock. The free consultation call is where we plan it.

  • Will not board after two weeks: a program
  • No recall from the water by May: a program
  • Boards and holds a mat: keep the plan

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Does my dog need a life jacket if it swims well?

Yes, on the boat. Swimming in a calm cove is not the same as swimming in a wake with a current after an hour in the sun, and a jacket with a handle is the only practical way to get a big dog back over the side. Fit it at home first so the dog is used to it.

Are there alligators in Lake Conroe?

Alligators are native across southeast Texas and Lake Conroe sits inside their range, with sightings more common in the warm months. Texas Parks and Wildlife has current guidance on living near them. Keep dogs off reedy banks at dawn and dusk, swim from docks and boats in open water, and leash the dog on shoreline walks.

My dog jumps off the boat when it sees another dog swimming. How do I stop it?

With a leash clipped to something solid until the place command holds, and a water recall on a long line so that when the dog does go it comes back on one call. A dog that has jumped once will try again; the leash removes the option, the training removes the urge.

Can our dog come on the pontoon with a crowd on the Fourth of July?

Only if it has done the ten weeks and handled a quieter trip first. A crowded pontoon on the Fourth means fireworks over the water, coolers to raid, kids jumping in and hours of noise, and even a trained dog is better at home in the crate for that one. Read the AVMA's fireworks guidance before the holiday.
