Lake Conroe with your dog: boats, docks and recall

A Lab on a Lake Conroe dock with no water manners is a dog one bad moment from a propeller, a jellyfish-free but alligator-possible swim, or a long night lost on the shore. The lake is wonderful for a trained dog, and the training is the same water curriculum we build for every lake dog.

The lake

Marinas, public parks, boat ramps and a lot of water.

Lake Conroe stretches north from Conroe and Montgomery toward the Sam Houston National Forest, with marinas, waterfront restaurants, public parks with boat ramps and swimming areas, and thousands of homes with their own docks. Dogs are welcome at the public parks on leash and on most family boats; the parks post their own rules, and the national forest shoreline follows the Forest Service's leash rules. In summer the lake is crowded with boats and jet skis, and the marinas are busy from Friday to Sunday.

For a dog the lake is water on every side, and water is the strongest distraction most dogs ever meet.

  • Public parks and boat ramps, leashed
  • Marinas busy from Friday to Sunday
  • Private docks on most waterfront lots
  • Forest Service leash rules on the national forest shoreline

What it asks of a dog

A wait, a water recall and calm on a moving deck.

The wait is the first skill: the dog does not leave the dock, the boat or the shore until released, however many birds are on the water. The recall out of the water is the second, and it has to beat birds, other dogs and the sheer pleasure of swimming. Calm on a boat is the third: a dog that paces, barks at jet skis or launches off the bow is a hazard to everyone aboard. All three are built on a long line at a quiet lake first and transferred to the family's own dock and boat.

A dog that has those three is a joy on the lake. A dog that has none of them is why we get the calls from Montgomery and Conroe in June.

  • A wait on the dock and the boat until released
  • A recall out of the water that beats birds
  • Calm on a moving deck, no launching off the bow
  • Neutrality to jet skis, marinas and strangers

How we build it

The long line at a quiet lake, then your dock, then the boat.

Water manners start with a wait at the edge on a long line, rewarded with the release into the water, so the dog learns that patience is what gets it the swim. The recall out of the water follows: called from the shallows at first, rewarded with another swim, then from deeper water, then past birds. Only then does the line come off, and for most dogs only on the family's own dock. The boat is last: a settle on a mat on the deck at the dock, then a short trip, then a long one.

This is the water curriculum in a Platinum stay for a lake dog, built at the lake near the training home and transferred at the family's dock in the go-home session for Montgomery and Conroe families who take the transport. VIP finishes it off leash with the Mini-Educator for a dog that will live on the water.

Alligators, heat and the deck

Warm water has alligators; a boat deck is hot pavement.

Lake Conroe holds alligators, especially in the coves and creeks on the northern end, and Texas Parks and Wildlife's guidance applies: keep dogs leashed at the public shore, back from the bank at dusk, and out of water where an alligator has been seen. A family's own dock in open water is a different risk from a brushy cove, and the family knows its own shoreline; the wait at the edge is the dog's protection either way.

A boat deck in July is as hot as a parking lot, and a dog on it for an afternoon overheats even beside the water. Shade, a wet mat, water to drink and swims to cool are the plan; the AVMA's heat guidance lists the signs, and a dog that will not stop swimming is the classic lake case.

  • Out of coves and creeks where alligators are seen
  • Shade, a wet mat and drinking water on the boat
  • A life jacket for the swimmer that will not quit

Lake families and the training home

About an hour north, with the handover at your dock.

Montgomery and Conroe are about 45 to 55 minutes from the training home in Cypress, and lake families usually take the $250 transport so the go-home session happens at their own dock: the wait, the recall out of the water and the boat settle demonstrated where they will be used. The Montgomery and Conroe hub pages cover the logistics. A lake dog trained in the cool months goes into its first summer on the water with the manners already in place, which is the order we recommend.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Are dogs allowed at Lake Conroe parks?

At the public parks and boat ramps on leash, with each park posting its own rules, and on the national forest shoreline under the Forest Service's leash rules. Family boats and private docks are up to the family, which is where the training matters most.

How do I stop my dog jumping off the dock or the boat?

Teach a wait at the edge on a long line and release the dog into the water as the reward, so patience earns the swim. Then a settle on a mat on the deck. It is built at a quiet lake first and transferred to your own dock in the go-home session.

Are there alligators in Lake Conroe?

Yes, especially in the coves and creeks on the northern end. Texas Parks and Wildlife's guidance is to keep dogs leashed at the shore, back from the bank at dusk and out of water where an alligator has been seen. A wait at the edge is the dog's protection.

Should my dog wear a life jacket?

A dog that swims hard and will not quit, a dog on a boat in open water and any dog that is not a strong swimmer should. A jacket with a handle also makes getting a dog back onto a boat far easier.
