Dog swimming spots near Houston, and the water recall to earn them
Houston is full of water and almost none of it is for dogs. The right places are few and the wrong places are everywhere, and the difference between them is what a Lab does not understand and what a family has to.

Where dogs can swim
Dog park ponds, pools, the Gulf on a long line, and a family dock.
The fenced dog parks with ponds, Millie Bush in George Bush Park and Johnny Steele on Buffalo Bayou among them, are the sanctioned swims in the city, when the ponds are open and the water is clean. A backyard pool is the safest swim of all for a dog taught to wait at the edge and to find the steps. The Gulf at Galveston is a swim on a long line for a dog with a recall, early in the day. And Lake Conroe, Lake Houston and Towne Lake are swims from a family's own dock in open water, once the water manners exist.
Each has its own page on this site with the rules and the risks; the common thread is that the dog earns the water with training, not with enthusiasm.
- Dog park ponds when open and clean
- A backyard pool with a wait and the steps taught
- The Gulf on a long line, early
- Big lakes from a family dock, in open water
Where dogs should not swim
Bayous, creeks, retention ponds and the Brazos.
Buffalo Bayou, Cypress Creek, Spring Creek, Brays and White Oak bayous and the Brazos all carry current and debris after rain, whatever the city and the fields send into them, and alligators from spring through fall. The retention ponds behind the master-planned neighborhoods are slow warm water with algae in the heat and, often, an alligator nobody has noticed. Texas Parks and Wildlife's guidance is to keep dogs leashed and back from the bank in all of them, and the leash rules on the trails exist for that reason.
Blue-green algae in a warm stagnant pond can be fatal to a dog within hours of a swim; scummy or discolored water is a hard no, and a rinse after any swim is sensible.
- No bayous, creeks or the Brazos: current, debris, alligators
- No retention ponds: algae and alligators
- Scummy or discolored water is a hard no
- Rinse after every swim
The water recall
A wait at the edge, a recall out of the shallows, then the deep, then past birds.
The water recall is built in the same order every time. First a wait at the edge on a long line, with the release into the water as the reward, so patience earns the swim. Then a recall out of the shallows, rewarded with another swim, so coming out never means the fun ends. Then a recall from deeper water, then past birds, then past another dog. Only after all of that does the line come off, and for most dogs only at a family pool or dock.
This is the sequence we run at the lake near the training home in Cypress for every water dog in a Platinum stay, and it transfers to the family's pool or dock at the go-home session. VIP takes it to off-leash reliability with the Mini-Educator for the dog that lives on the water.

Pool manners
The wait, the steps and the party.
A backyard pool is where most Houston dogs swim, and the two things to teach are a wait at the edge until released and the location of the steps, walked in and out on a leash a dozen times until the dog goes to them on its own. A dog that knows the steps can get out on its own if it falls in; a dog that does not can drown in a pool it has swum in a hundred times. Pool parties add children, food and a dozen guests, and a dog that launches into the middle of them needs a place bed and a rule.
Chlorine is fine for most dogs in normal amounts; a rinse afterwards keeps the coat and the skin happy, and a pool cover that a dog cannot walk on is a safety item for every pool with a dog in the house.
- A wait at the edge until released
- The steps taught on a leash until the dog uses them alone
- A place bed and a rule for pool parties
- A cover the dog cannot walk on
Heat, salt and the season
A wet dog cools, and the walk to the water does not.
Swimming is the best summer exercise a Houston dog has, because a wet dog is a cool dog, but the walk to the pond at Millie Bush at ten in the morning or the sand at Galveston at noon is still dangerous, and a dog that will not stop swimming can overheat in the water too. Fresh water to drink stops a dog drinking the pond or the surf, which makes them sick. The AVMA's warm-weather guidance covers the signs of heat stroke and the AVMA's heat page the rules; both are worth reading once before the first summer with a water dog.

Platinum builds the wait and the water recall on a long line; VIP finishes them off leash for the dog that lives on the water.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Where can my dog swim safely near Houston?
The ponds inside the fenced dog parks when they are open and clean, a backyard pool, the Gulf at Galveston on a long line, and the big lakes from a family dock. The bayous, creeks, retention ponds and the Brazos are not safe, because of current, debris, algae and alligators.
Is blue-green algae a real risk here?
Yes. Warm stagnant water grows it in the summer, and a dog that swims in or drinks from it can be fatally ill within hours. Scummy or discolored water is a hard no, and a rinse after any swim is sensible.
How do I teach my dog to come out of the water?
On a long line, called from the shallows and rewarded with another swim so coming out never ends the fun, then from deeper water, then past birds. It is standard water work in a Platinum stay and transfers to your pool or dock in the go-home session.
Can a dog drown in a backyard pool?
Yes, if it does not know where the steps are. Walk the dog in and out by the steps on a leash a dozen times until it goes to them alone, teach a wait at the edge, and use a cover the dog cannot walk on.
