Millie Bush Bark Park with your dog: the big one in George Bush Park

Ask a west Houston family where they take the dog on Saturday and the answer is Millie Bush. Ask us which park sends the most reactive dogs to the training home and the answer is the same. It is a wonderful park for the right dog, and the right dog is a trained one.

The park

Big, open, watery and busy.

Millie Bush sits inside George Bush Park off Westheimer Parkway, between the Energy Corridor and Katy, and it is the off-leash park the whole west side uses. There are fenced sections for large and small dogs, ponds where retrievers spend the whole visit, water stations, and a crowd on any cool weekend morning. Harris County Precinct 3 runs it and posts the rules and any closures; check the current page before a first visit, because the ponds close after heavy rain and the park itself can flood in a wet season.

The scale is the point. A dog can run flat out for two hundred yards here, which is exactly why a dog with no recall should not be loose in it.

What it asks of a dog

A recall that beats a pack, and a habit of checking in.

An off-leash park with water is the hardest test in dog training. Your dog will be called while it is mid-chase, wet, surrounded by dogs it has just met, two hundred yards away. A recall that works in your yard does not count. The recall that works here is built on a long line in empty fields, then near a lake, then near other dogs at a distance, over weeks, with the dog never given the chance to ignore the word. It is the recall we build in every Platinum stay and finish in VIP.

The second skill is neutrality: a dog that plays and then disengages, that does not mob the new arrival at the gate, that comes away from a dog that is getting stiff. Dogs that lack it get into the fights that happen at every busy park, and the fights teach reactivity that lasts for years.

  • A long-line recall proofed near water and dogs before any off-leash visit
  • Disengagement: comes away from play on one call
  • Calm at the gate, where most incidents start
  • Reads other dogs and leaves the stiff ones alone

A first visit, done right

Off hours, on a long line, at the edge.

Go at seven on a weekday morning, not eleven on Saturday. Walk the outside fence line on leash first, so the dog sees the crowd from a distance it can hold. Enter the quieter section with a long line on and let it drag, so a recall can still be enforced. Ten minutes, one clean recall, and leave while the dog is still succeeding. The next visit is longer. The pond comes last, after the recall out of water has been built somewhere calmer.

If the dog stiffens, stares or charges at the fence, it is not ready, and the honest plan is a few weeks of neutrality work at a distance and a return when the dog can watch the park without reacting.

Heat, water and the summer

The ponds cool the dog; the open field does not.

George Bush Park is flat and open, and from May to September the field is dangerous by nine in the morning for a dog that is running. The ponds help, and a wet dog is a cooler dog, but the walk from the parking lot and the run between swims still happen in the sun. Summer visits are at first light with water in the car, and a dog that is panting hard in the shade is finished for the day whatever the clock says. The AVMA's heat guidance describes heat stroke; every summer some dog at a Houston park gets it.

Pond water in the Houston heat can carry bacteria and blue-green algae; if the water looks scummy, the dog stays out, and a rinse at home after any swim is sensible.

  • First light only in summer
  • Water in the car and a hard stop at heavy panting
  • Skip the ponds when the water looks scummy
  • Rinse after swimming

Who should skip it

Reactive dogs, puppies and dogs that resource guard.

A dog that lunges at other dogs on leash does not become friendly by being turned loose among thirty of them; it rehearses the lunge with contact. A puppy under about six months can be flattened by an adult Lab and carry it for life; socialize a puppy on parallel walks with calm known dogs instead. A dog that guards toys or water bowls will find both here. And a dog with no recall is a dog that will one day not come back from the far pond, with the owner shouting and the park watching. Those dogs are welcome at the training home, and after a Platinum stay many of them come back to Millie Bush on a long line and, eventually, without one.

Programs that earn an off-leash park.

Platinum builds the recall and the neutrality on a long line; VIP finishes it off leash with the Mini-Educator.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Is Millie Bush Bark Park fenced and free?

It is a fenced off-leash park inside George Bush Park run by Harris County Precinct 3, with separate large and small dog sections. Check the Precinct 3 parks site for the current rules, hours and any closures before you go; the ponds and sometimes the park close after heavy rain.

Can my dog swim there?

Yes, the ponds are the main attraction for retrievers. Build a recall out of the water somewhere calmer first, skip the ponds when the water looks scummy in the heat, and rinse the dog afterwards.

Should I take my reactive dog to Millie Bush to socialize it?

No. An off-leash crowd is the worst place to work reactivity; every lunge is rehearsed with contact. Work neutrality at a distance first, usually in a Platinum stay, and come back to the fence line on a leash when the dog can watch calmly.

How do I teach the recall a park like this needs?

On a long line, in empty fields, then near water, then near dogs at a distance, over weeks, with the dog never allowed to ignore the word. Our recall guide covers the method and the Platinum and VIP programs build it daily.
