Pool season and dogs in Houston: water manners and safety

Half the houses in Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch and Sienna have a pool and most of the dogs we train from them have never been taught the edge. The rule is simple: no dog goes in until it can be called out.

The season

April to October, a pool in half the yards, and a deck that hits 130 degrees.

A Houston backyard pool is usable from April into October and the season peaks with the parties from Memorial Day to Labor Day, when the yard is full of children, food and guests' dogs and the back door is open all afternoon. The AVMA's warm-weather guidance covers the two hazards most families miss: a pool deck in the August sun burns pads and heats the dog lying on it, and a dog that cannot find the steps can drown in a pool it has swum in a hundred times. Chlorine is not a health problem at pool levels but a rinse after a swim keeps the coat and skin comfortable, and a dog that drinks the pool gets an upset stomach.

Community pools in the master-planned sections are a separate matter: most prohibit dogs, and the HOA rules page on this site covers the general pattern.

  • Season April to October, parties from Memorial Day on
  • A deck that burns pads and heats a resting dog
  • The steps as the only exit
  • Rinse after a swim, no drinking the pool
  • Community pools usually closed to dogs

What it asks of your dog

A wait at the edge, a recall out of the water, the steps, and a settle while the party happens.

The wait at the edge is the safety skill: a dog that launches at every splash will launch when a toddler is in the water. The recall out of the water is the other half, and it has to beat the ball, the child and the other dog, which means it is built on a long line first and proofed with real distraction before anyone trusts it. Every dog, swimmer or not, is walked to the steps and out of them on a leash until it goes there on its own, because a panicked dog swims to the edge nearest it and claws at the coping until it tires. And the settle matters as much as the water skills: a dog that can hold place on the shaded patio while the party runs is a dog that is welcome at the party.

Breed is the last variable. Labs and goldens swim by instinct and need the rules; bulldogs, Frenchies, pugs, dachshunds and heavy-chested dogs sink, and they need a life jacket and a fence or a closed door.

  • A wait at the edge until released
  • A recall out of the water that beats the ball
  • The steps, learned on a leash
  • Place on the shaded patio during the party
  • A life jacket and a barrier for the breeds that sink

How we prepare dogs

Water manners at the lake on a long line, then transferred to your pool at the go-home session.

Water work is part of Platinum and VIP stays for water dogs, and the method is a long line at the lake near the training home: the wait at the edge, the release, the recall out with the line as the insurance, repeated until the dog comes out of the water on its name every time. The pool skills transfer at the go-home session for families who take the transport, with the steps walked, the edge worked and the family running the release. Families doing it themselves can follow the same order, starting with a pool that has steps and a leash long enough to reach.

1

A leash walk around the pool, to the steps and out, until the dog knows the exit

2

A wait at the edge on a leash, released with one word, with the dog going in only on that word

3

A recall out of the shallow end on a long line, rewarded at the steps

4

The recall out past a ball, then past a person in the water, then past another dog

5

A life jacket for any breed that sinks, and a fence or a closed door when nobody is watching

6

Place on the shaded patio during a quiet swim, then during a small party

7

A rinse after every swim and a pavement test on the deck before the dog lies down

The lakes and the beach, the heat calendar, and the community pool rules.

The wait and the recall are the same skills a dog needs at Lake Conroe, on the Towne Lake boardwalk and at Galveston, and the swimming-spots guide on this site covers the sanctioned water and the water to avoid, including the community lakes with alligators. The heat calendar guide sets the hours; a pool at noon in August is a dog on a hot deck, not a dog cooling off. The HOA rules page covers community pools and the barking and leash rules that come with a master-planned section. Families in Bellaire, Memorial and the villages have the same pools with more guests and staff, and their area pages note the handover at the pool gate.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can all dogs swim?

No. Bulldogs, French bulldogs, pugs, dachshunds, basset hounds and other heavy-fronted or short-legged breeds sink or tire fast, and even strong swimmers drown when they cannot find the steps. A life jacket for the breeds that sink and a leash walk to the steps for every dog are the two rules.

How do I teach my dog to stay out of the pool until I say?

A wait at the edge on a leash, released with one word, repeated until the dog goes in only on that word, then proofed with a ball and a person in the water. It is built in a Platinum or VIP stay at the lake on a long line and transferred to your pool at the go-home session.

Is chlorine bad for dogs?

At normal pool levels, no, but a rinse after a swim keeps the coat and skin comfortable and a dog should not drink from the pool. Pool chemicals in their containers are a different matter and belong locked away; the ASPCA poison control line is the number if a dog gets into them.

Can my dog come to the community pool?

Usually not. Most master-planned communities around Houston prohibit dogs at the community pool, and the HOA rules page on this site covers the pattern. The backyard pool and the sanctioned swimming spots in the swimming guide are the places for a dog.
