Puppy training in Memorial: Memorial Park at the right age, and not before
Memorial dogs walk more than most in Houston, and the Memorial Park loops are where a lot of them learn their worst habits: pulling toward every dog, lunging at cyclists, greeting strangers with their front paws. A Memorial puppy can skip all of that if the first four months are spent building the check-in before the park, not on it.

The park, at the right age
Memorial Park is for sixteen weeks and a recall; before that it is a bench at the edge.
Until your veterinarian confirms the vaccine series is complete, usually around sixteen weeks, the puppy's paws stay off ground that unknown dogs use, and the Seymour Lieberman trail is about as shared as ground gets. That does not mean the park is off limits. From your arms on a bench at the edge, a Memorial puppy watches runners, cyclists, strollers and a hundred dogs go past at a distance it can handle, and every calm minute is a deposit toward a dog that walks the loop without a scene.
The rest of the socialization list is close: the CityCentre and Memorial City patios from a mat under the table, the pet and hardware stores along I-10 from a cart, the sidewalks of the villages from your arms at a busy hour. After clearance the park opens up on a long line at a quiet hour, on the grass rather than the crowded trail, and the loop itself comes once the puppy has a recall.

The four sessions
Four sessions in a Memorial townhome or a village house, with the check-in built before the walk.
The first session is in the puppy's first week. In a townhome near the park it is mostly about the potty routine, with a set spot at the nearest grass and a schedule tight enough for a puppy that cannot hold on; in a village house on a big lot it starts with the fence, the pool and the potty spot. Either way the crate goes where the family lives, the marker word is taught, and the nipping plan is written for a doodle or a French bulldog puppy that will find hands within a day.
Sessions two through four run about a week apart: sit, the place bed and recall between rooms; then a stay with duration, recall on a long line and the first leash walk on your own street once the vet has cleared the ground; then a review at the park edge on a long line, with the check-in rewarded every few steps, and the plan for the adolescent months.
Session one: the potty routine for a townhome or a big lot, crate placement, the marker word, and the nipping plan.
Session two: sit, the place bed, recall between rooms, and greetings without front paws.
Session three: a short stay, recall on a long line, and the first walk on your street after clearance.
Session four: the park edge on a long line with the check-in rewarded, and the plan for months four to twelve.
Heat and housing
A Memorial summer, a townhome or a village lot, and a lot of guests.
From May through September a Memorial puppy's outings run before nine and after seven, and the park's shade does not change the rule; the trail surface is tested with the back of your hand before the puppy walks on it. Potty trips go to shaded grass, and a townhome puppy that has to cross a hot driveway to reach it gets carried. Fire ants come up in the beds after rain, and the mosquitoes make heartworm prevention a first-vet-visit conversation.
The housing is two things: townhomes and patio homes near the park, with small yards and busy sidewalks, and large lots in the villages, with pools, gates and a front door that opens for guests, deliveries and staff all week. A place bed at the front door and a sit before every greeting are in the bundle from session two, because a Memorial puppy meets more strangers in a month than most dogs meet in a year.
- Before nine and after seven from May through September; the trail surface tested first
- A place bed at the front door for guests and deliveries, from session two
- A pool gate and the fence walked on a village lot; the potty spot at the nearest grass for a townhome
- Heartworm prevention from the first vet visit
Bundle or a stay
The bundle before the park; a Platinum stay later if the park has already won.
A stay is not for a puppy under four months. From about four to five months, once the puppy can hold structure for a whole day, Gold at $2,500 for two weeks builds the manners set and Platinum at $3,750 for three weeks adds the structured heel, behavior modification and field trips into real public places, which for a Memorial dog means the loop itself.
Memorial is 25 to 35 minutes from Cypress, so families both drop off and take the $250 transport, which brings the go-home session to your house. A puppy that did the bundle first arrives at a stay with the check-in already built, and the stay spends its weeks on the heel and the impulse control instead of the basics.

Prices
Memorial bundle prices, at your house or ours.
The bundle is $750 at your Memorial home and $550 at our Cypress training home, about 25 to 35 minutes away outside rush hour. Memorial families split between the two: the in-home version when the plan depends on the townhome's potty routine, the pool or the guests; the Cypress version when the questions are about the puppy and the drive fits the week.
Lessons pick up after four months at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your Memorial home. A later stay is reserved with a $250 deposit.
The programs
For a Memorial puppy, and for the park dog it becomes.
The bundle at $750 in your Memorial home or $550 in Cypress for the first four months; lessons afterward; a Platinum stay with the loop as a field trip if the park has already taught bad habits.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
When can our puppy actually walk the Memorial Park loop?
On its own feet, after your veterinarian confirms the vaccine series is complete, usually around sixteen weeks, and on the loop itself once it has a recall and can walk past a dog without lunging. Between those two points the park is a long line on the grass at a quiet hour. Rushing the loop is how Memorial dogs learn to pull.
Our townhome has no yard. Can the bundle still work?
Yes; a lot of Memorial puppies live in townhomes. The potty routine is built around the nearest patch of grass, a carry across the hot driveway in summer, and a schedule of trips after every nap, meal and play session. The rest of the bundle, sit, place, recall and the greetings, needs a hallway and a place bed, not a yard.
We have a housekeeper and frequent guests. Who does the puppy listen to?
Everyone who follows the same rules, which is why the in-home version is worth it in a busy village house. The trainer teaches the household, including staff, the marker word, the sit before greetings and the place bed at the door, so the puppy gets one set of answers. A puppy that gets five sets of rules learns to ignore all of them.
Is Cypress really only 25 to 35 minutes from Memorial?
Outside rush hour, via I-10 and 290 or the Beltway, yes. The $550 version at our Cypress home works well for a Memorial family with a yard and questions about the puppy rather than the house, and the drive between naps is easy. If the townhome routine, the pool or the guests are the question, the $750 in-home version earns its price.
