Puppy potty training

Puppy potty training in Houston: a schedule that survives the rain

The puppy that is still peeing on the rug at six months almost always had a schedule that worked for a week and drifted. The fix is not a different method; it is the same method, kept.

The method

A schedule, a crate and a reward within seconds.

Out every hour on the hour while the puppy is awake, and immediately after eating, drinking, waking and playing, to the same spot, on a leash, with a word you use every time. The instant the puppy goes, a treat and praise, right there, not back at the door. Between trips, the puppy is either watched by an adult or in its crate, because an unsupervised puppy will find the rug. Accidents inside are cleaned with an enzyme cleaner and ignored; a puppy punished for an accident learns to hide, not to hold.

Overnight, the crate beside the bed, one trip out in the middle of the night for the first weeks, and water picked up an hour before bed.

  • Every hour, and after eating, waking and play
  • Same spot, same word, on a leash
  • Reward within seconds, at the spot
  • Crate for every unsupervised minute

Why Houston makes it harder

Rain, heat, fire ants and a yard that floods.

A puppy that is walked to the yard on a hot July afternoon or a stormy March night learns that going outside is unpleasant, and starts holding it until it is back on the rug. Fire ant mounds swell after rain and a puppy that stands on one remembers the yard as the place it got bitten. Mosquitoes, wet grass and a yard that stands in water after a downpour all give a small dog reasons to prefer the carpet.

The answer is a covered spot near the door, a leash so the trip is short and purposeful, a check of the yard for mounds after rain, and, in summer, the coolest hours for the longer trips with a quick one in between.

The mistakes that undo it

Free roaming, punishment, pads and a schedule that drifted.

Free roaming is the first mistake: a puppy loose in the house between trips is a puppy that goes on the rug. Punishment is the second: a puppy scolded after the fact learns that people are dangerous near pee, and goes behind the couch. Pee pads are the third for most families, because they teach the puppy that indoors is fine. And the schedule that drifts is the fourth: the first week is perfect, the second week the trips stretch to every two hours, and by the third week the accidents are back and the family thinks the puppy is stubborn.

A puppy that was reliable and has started going inside again may also be sick; a vet check rules out a urinary infection before the schedule is blamed.

1

Crate or an adult's eyes on the puppy, always

2

No punishment after the fact; clean and move on

3

No pads unless a vet or an apartment forces it

4

Keep the hourly schedule for a month, then stretch slowly

5

A vet check if a reliable puppy regresses

6

Write the trips down; drift is invisible until you do

Which program

The Puppy Development Bundle sets it up; a lesson resets a puppy that drifted.

The Puppy Development Bundle is four private sessions for puppies under four months, $550 at the training home in Cypress or $750 in your home, and the potty routine is set in the first session alongside the crate, because the two work together. Our trainer sets the schedule for your house, your yard and your work day, and the later sessions add the first commands, socialization and the greeting rule. A puppy past four months that is still having accidents gets an in-home lesson at $220 and a reset of the schedule; a puppy with a medical cause gets the vet first.

Houston specifics

Apartments, HOAs and the summer puppy.

A puppy in a Heights or Midtown apartment has an elevator between it and the grass, which makes the hourly trip a project; the crate and a carried puppy make it possible, and a covered balcony spot is a last resort, not a plan. Master-planned yards have rules about where dogs go and what gets cleaned up, and the front yard is not the spot. A summer puppy's trips happen on the shaded side of the yard at the cool hours with the pavement test on the way, and the ASPCA's poison line covers what a puppy eats in a yard: mulch, mushrooms after rain, toads on a wet night. The bundle is booked most in April and September, when the litters come home.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How long does it take to potty train a puppy?

Most puppies are reliable within a few weeks of an hourly schedule, a crate and rewards at the spot, and fully trustworthy by five or six months. Puppies that take longer almost always had a schedule that drifted or free roaming between trips.

Should I use pee pads?

Not unless a vet or an apartment situation forces it, because pads teach the puppy that indoors is a fine place to go. The yard trip on a leash with a reward at the spot is the method, and a carried puppy makes it possible even from an apartment.

My puppy was trained and has started going inside again. Why?

Either the schedule drifted, the puppy was given the house too soon, or the puppy is sick. Check the schedule honestly, go back to the crate between trips, and get a vet check for a urinary infection if the regression is sudden.

How do I potty train in the Houston heat?

The longer trips at the coolest hours, quick trips in between, the shaded side of the yard, and a leash so the trip is purposeful. A puppy that finds the yard hot and unpleasant will hold it for the rug, so the trip has to be easy.

Does the puppy bundle cover potty training?

Yes. It is set up in the first session with the crate, because the two work together, and our trainer builds the schedule for your house and your work day. The later sessions add the first commands, socialization and the greeting rule.
