Crate training

Crate training in Houston: puppies, rescues and hurricane season

Every hurricane season some Houston family discovers, with a storm two days out, that the dog cannot be crated. Every July some family discovers it on the night of the Fourth. Crate calm is the skill nobody thinks about until the week it matters, and it takes about two weeks to build.

What crate training is

A den the dog chooses, built with food and patience.

A crate-trained dog walks into its crate on its own, eats there, naps there with the door open and sleeps there with it closed, and rides in one in the car without a sound. It is not a dog locked in a box for eight hours; it is a dog with a room of its own. The crate is sized for the dog to stand, turn and lie flat, placed where the household is, and never used as a punishment.

What crate training is not is confinement as a fix for a problem. A dog crated because it destroys the house has a training problem the crate manages; the crate is the den and the training is separate.

  • The dog enters on its own and eats there
  • Naps with the door open, sleeps with it closed
  • Rides calmly in a crate in the car
  • Never a punishment, never a substitute for training

Why it matters in Houston

Storms, hurricanes, fireworks, surgery and the summer car.

Houston asks more of a crate than most places. Spring storms and hurricane season need a dog that can settle through thunder in an interior room; an evacuation needs a dog that rides six hours in a crate and sleeps in a strange room or a shelter that only takes crated animals; July 4 and New Year's Eve need a covered crate with the noise on; surgery needs weeks of crate rest; and every trip to a store or the lake in summer starts with a crate in a car with the air on. A dog without crate calm limits what its family can do on the worst days of the year.

Ready Harris and the AVMA both put a crate at the center of a pet emergency plan, and so do we.

  • Storms and hurricane evacuations
  • July 4 and New Year's fireworks
  • Post-surgery crate rest
  • The car in summer, and every field trip

How we build it

Meals inside, doors that close for a chew, and crying that never opens them.

Day one, the crate is where meals happen with the door open. Day two, the door closes for the length of the meal and opens when the dog is calm. Then a chew with the door closed for ten minutes, then twenty, then a nap. Then the crate at night in the bedroom, then in its own room, then in the car in the driveway, then on a short drive. The rule from the first day is that whining, barking or scratching never opens the door; calm does. A dog that has learned that noise works will scream for an hour, and a dog that has learned it does not will settle in minutes.

For a rescue or an adult that panics in a crate the steps are smaller and slower, with the door removed at first and the crate rebuilt as a place the dog chooses. In the training home every dog sleeps in a crate and eats in one, so the skill is built daily in a Gold or Platinum stay whatever the dog came for.

Which program

The bundle for puppies, lessons for a plan you run, Gold for the dog that panics.

A puppy under four months gets crate training in the Puppy Development Bundle, $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, alongside the potty routine it supports. An adult dog that merely dislikes the crate responds to an in-home lesson at $220 and a plan you run for two weeks. A rescue or an adult that panics, screams or injures itself in a crate needs the daily, patient rebuilding a Gold stay at $2,500 provides, where the dog learns the crate in a house that runs on it, and comes home with the habit. Separation anxiety that shows as crate panic is worked as separation anxiety, usually in Platinum at $3,750.

Houston specifics

Where the crate goes, and when to build it.

The crate lives in an interior room with no windows for storm and fireworks nights, covered, with a fan for white noise. It goes in the car with the air already on for every summer trip, and never in a parked car. Build crate calm in the cool months, before storm season, before July 4, and before any planned surgery, so the crate is a den by the time it has to be a refuge. The hurricane page on this site covers the go-bag and the evacuation drive; the crate is the part that decides whether the dog can come.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

My dog screams in the crate. What do I do?

Make sure the crate is the right size and in a quiet room, feed every meal in it with the door open, close the door only for a chew at first, and never open it for noise. A dog that panics rather than protests needs the door off and smaller steps, and a Gold stay builds it daily if you are stuck.

How long can a dog stay in a crate?

A puppy about as many hours as its age in months plus one, an adult a working day at most with a walk before and after, and never as a way of life. The crate is a den for meals, sleep, travel and emergencies, not a place a dog lives.

Is crate training cruel?

A crate the dog chooses, sized right and never used as punishment, is a den, and most crate-trained dogs nap in theirs with the door open. Crating a dog for most of its waking hours is a different thing and is not what we teach.

When should I crate train a puppy?

From the first day home: meals in the crate, naps in the crate, the crate at night beside the bed. It supports potty training and it is far easier at eight weeks than at eight months. The Puppy Development Bundle covers it in the first sessions.

Why do you make such a point of crate training in Houston?

Because storms, hurricanes, fireworks and summer car travel all need a dog that settles in a crate, and a dog that cannot limits what its family can do on the worst days of the year. Ready Harris and the AVMA both put a crate at the center of a pet emergency plan.
