Hurricane season prep for dogs in Houston

Every Houston family has a storm story, and most of them include a dog who would not get in the car, would not settle in the hotel, or panicked in the crate. The gear is easy. The dog that can use the gear calmly is trained, and June is late to start.

The season

June 1 to November 30, with the worst of it in August, September and early October.

The Atlantic hurricane season covers half the year, and the Houston region's serious storms cluster in late summer and early fall. Ready Harris, the county's emergency preparedness program, and the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office are the two sources to follow; both publish pet-specific guidance and both update in real time when a storm is in the Gulf. A plan made in May is a plan; one made when the cone appears is a scramble.

Flooding is the more frequent event. A tropical storm that never becomes a hurricane can still close roads across Cypress, Katy and Spring for days, which changes the plan from evacuation to sheltering in place with a dog who cannot walk outside.

The go-bag

Two weeks of food, the records, the crate, and the things that make a strange room feel normal.

Pack two weeks of the dog's regular food and any medication, bowls, a leash and a spare, waste bags, a towel, and a copy of vaccination records and microchip information in a waterproof folder with a recent photo of the dog. Ready.gov's pet checklist is the reference. Add the dog's place bed or crate mat, because a familiar surface in an unfamiliar room is worth more than any toy.

Confirm the microchip registration is current and the tag has a cell number. Shelters and hotels that accept pets ask for vaccination records, and Harris County Pets and BARC can help with licensing and record questions before the season.

The plan

Decide now where you would go and how the dog rides, because roads fill in hours.

Evacuation from the Houston area means hours in the car on 45, 290 or 10, often at walking pace. Decide the destination in advance, family in Dallas or Austin, a pet-friendly hotel, a friend in the Hill Country, and call ahead when a storm enters the Gulf, not when the order comes. AVMA's disaster guidance and Ready.gov both stress that pets are not accepted at every public shelter, so the plan has to be your own.

Sheltering in place needs its own list: enough food for a week without a store, a plan for potty breaks if the street floods, and a crate or interior room for the hours of wind.

The training

A dog that loads calmly, rides quietly and settles in a crate is the whole plan.

The storm week goes badly for the untrained dog at three points: getting into the car, the hours in it, and the strange room at the other end. Each is a skill. Loading is a door-boundary exercise at the truck: wait, load on cue, settle. Riding calmly is crate calm on wheels, built in short drives that end well. Settling in a strange room is place with duration, practiced in the house, then a friend's house, then a hotel lobby.

Our trainers build all three in every board and train, because the same skills make daily life easier, and a Gold or Platinum stay in the spring produces a dog that is ready for August. Private lessons in the home can rehearse the actual load-and-go with your car and your crate.

  • Load in the car on cue
  • Crate calm for long rides

  • Rehearsed before June, not during

After the storm

Standing water, debris and displaced wildlife make the days after harder than the storm.

Flooded streets carry bacteria, fire ants rafting on the water, snakes displaced from bayous and sharp debris. Keep the dog leashed on every walk for a week after a flood, avoid standing water entirely, wash paws after every outing, and watch for cuts. Heartworm prevention matters more after a wet week, and the ASPCA's poison control line is the number for contaminated water or a toad. A dog with a structured walk and a solid heel is far easier to keep out of trouble on a debris-strewn street.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

When is hurricane season in Houston?

June 1 to November 30 on the Texas coast, with the highest risk in August, September and early October. Ready Harris and the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office publish guidance and real-time updates for the county.

What should be in a hurricane go-bag for a dog?

Two weeks of food and medication, vaccination and microchip records in a waterproof folder with a photo, a crate or carrier and its mat, leash and spare, collar with a cell number, water, bowls, waste bags, a towel and a first-aid kit. Ready.gov's pet checklist covers the details.

Do Houston shelters accept dogs during a hurricane?

Not all public shelters accept pets, and those that do have conditions. Ready Harris publishes current information when a storm is active. The safer plan is your own: family or a pet-friendly hotel north of the track, arranged when a storm enters the Gulf.

How do I get my dog to stay calm in the car for an evacuation?

Build crate calm first at home, then short drives in the crate that end somewhere good, then longer ones. Load on cue with a door-boundary exercise at the car. A dog that has done a board and train arrives at storm season with all three skills.

What are the dangers for dogs after a flood in Houston?

Contaminated standing water, rafting fire ants, displaced snakes and sharp debris. Keep the dog leashed and out of the water for at least a week, wash paws after every walk, watch for cuts, and keep heartworm prevention current.
