Puppy training in Houston: the first four months, done right

The window between eight and sixteen weeks does not come back. A puppy who learns the crate, the leash, a calm greeting and a place bed now becomes an easy adult; one who learns that biting, jumping and crying get results becomes the dog people call about at fourteen months. Houston adds a twist: half of that window falls in months when the pavement burns paws, so the plan has to fit the heat.

What the bundle is

Four private sessions that teach you to raise the puppy, not just the puppy.

A puppy under four months does not need a board and train. What the household needs is a plan, a few mechanics done right, and someone to catch mistakes early. That is what the Puppy Development Bundle is: four private in-person sessions with our trainers, each 45 to 60 minutes, spaced so you can practice between them.

Session by session you build the foundation: name response and engagement, sit and down, the first version of place, a calm crate routine, potty timing, leash introduction and the beginnings of recall. Every session ends with a written set of things to practice, so the work continues in your kitchen and yard, where a puppy actually learns.

The Cypress sessions are $550 for the bundle. In-home sessions across Houston, Katy, The Woodlands and Tomball are $750, which is often the better choice for a young puppy, because the crate, the back door and the family are all right there.

What we prevent

Nipping, jumping and housebreaking are easier to prevent than to fix.

Most of the adult dogs who arrive for behavior modification learned their problem as a puppy. The mouthy puppy who got pushed away learned that teeth get attention. The puppy who was greeted at the door with squeals learned to launch. The puppy who was let out of the crate when he cried learned to cry louder and longer.

The bundle teaches you the alternative in each case: how to redirect and end nipping without a wrestling match, how to make four paws on the floor the only way to be greeted, how to time potty trips so accidents stop, and how to make the crate a calm place rather than a punishment. Done at ten weeks, each of these takes days. Done at ten months, each takes a program.

Socialization in Houston

Socialization means calm exposure, not a free-for-all, and the heat changes where it happens.

Socialization is the most misunderstood word in puppy raising. It does not mean letting every dog and person rush your puppy. It means calm exposure to the world: surfaces, sounds, people of every kind, other dogs at a distance, car rides, the vet lobby, a hardware store aisle. The goal is a puppy who notices new things and stays relaxed.

In Houston that plan has to work around heat. From May through September the outdoor pieces happen early in the morning or after sunset, and the midday exposure moves indoors to pet stores along 290 and Fry Road, big-box hardware aisles, and friends' living rooms. Our team also covers the vaccination timing question with you: what is reasonable before the series is complete, and what waits.

1

Start with surfaces and sounds at home: tile, grass, a running dishwasher, a dropped pan.

2

Add short car rides that end somewhere pleasant, not only the vet.

3

Visit a quiet store aisle at an off-peak hour and let the puppy watch carts and people from a distance.

4

Meet calm, vaccinated adult dogs you know, on leash, for short greetings that end before the puppy gets frantic.

5

Practice a settle on place in a new room every few days.

6

Keep every exposure short and end it while the puppy is still calm.

When a board and train fits instead

Older puppies and dogs past four months usually do better living in our trainer's home for a stay.

At five, six or eight months a puppy is an adolescent. Adolescents test, pull, forget their name and discover other dogs. The bundle is not built for that; the two-week Gold ($2,500) and three-week Platinum ($3,750) board and train programs are. Your dog lives in our Cypress training home, trains daily, and comes home with a go-home session.

If you are not sure which side of the line your puppy is on, the free phone consultation settles it. Our team asks the age, the breed and what is already happening, and recommends the bundle when it fits and a stay when it does not.

  • Under four months: Puppy Development Bundle
  • Four to twelve months with manners problems: Gold
  • Adolescent with reactivity or fear: Platinum

Where families come from

Cypress sessions or in-home visits across northwest Houston, Katy, The Woodlands and Tomball.

The facility sessions happen in Cypress, off 290. In-home sessions run across the service area: Bridgeland, Towne Lake and Fairfield are minutes away; Katy and Cinco Ranch are about 25 to 35 minutes; Creekside Park and The Woodlands about 35 to 45. In-home is the right call when the crate, the yard and the kids are the actual training environment, which for a puppy is almost always.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much is puppy training in Houston at Best Dog University?

The Puppy Development Bundle is $550 for four private sessions at the Cypress facility, or $750 for four in-home sessions across the Houston service area. Each session is 45 to 60 minutes and ends with a written plan to practice before the next one.

What age should I start puppy training?

The day the puppy comes home, usually eight weeks. The bundle is designed for puppies under four months because that is when habits form fastest. Crate routine, potty timing and name response begin in week one; formal commands follow as attention span allows.

Can my puppy go to a board and train instead?

Puppies under four months do better with the bundle, because the household is what needs training. From about four to five months, and for any adolescent with pulling, jumping or reactivity, the Gold or Platinum board and train in our trainer's home is the better tool.

Is it safe to socialize a puppy before all the vaccines are done?

Careful exposure is possible before the series is complete: clean indoor spaces, known vaccinated adult dogs, car rides and carried visits to busy places. Our trainers cover what is reasonable for your puppy in the first session, and your vet has the final word on timing.

Do you offer puppy classes in Houston?

No group classes. The bundle is private, one puppy and one family at a time, so the plan fits your puppy's temperament and your house. Group classes suit some puppies well for the social piece; the bundle covers that with structured, calmer exposure.
