Forest trails with a dog

Sam Houston National Forest with a dog: Lone Star trail rules

The Lone Star Hiking Trail is the closest thing to real backcountry near Houston. For a dog, that means long miles, wildlife, other hikers, hunters in season and no one nearby if something goes wrong.

Getting there and trailheads

North on 249 or I-45, to trailheads spread across the forest.

The forest lies north of Houston around Conroe, Willis and Lake Conroe, and its trailheads are spread across a wide area. From our training home in Cypress the closest are about an hour away up 249 or I-45 outside rush hour. Willis and Conroe families are much closer, and many use the forest as their weekend walk.

Trailhead parking is simple compared with a city park, but it can be remote, with no water and patchy phone coverage. Tell someone where you are going, bring water for the dog and yourself, and check the Forest Service page for trail closures, fire restrictions and hunting season dates before you leave. A small first-aid kit, a spare leash and a towel for creek mud make the difference between an annoyance and a ruined day.

  • About an hour from Cypress to the nearest trailheads
  • Remote parking with no water
  • Patchy phone coverage; tell someone your plan
  • Check closures and hunting dates first

The route we use and why

Short out-and-backs first, a heel on narrow trail, and a turn-around point set in advance.

We start with short out-and-back walks from a trailhead, never a long loop, so we can turn around the moment the dog tires or the heat builds. The Lone Star Hiking Trail is narrow in places, with roots, sand and creek crossings, and the dog has to walk in a heel on a fixed leash without tangling around trees or tripping the handler.

Wildlife is everywhere, and deer, squirrels and armadillos test the leave-it. Other hikers often come with dogs. We step off the trail for every group and reward calm. We set the turn-around point before we start, based on the weather and the dog's fitness, and stick to it. A tired dog on a narrow trail makes worse choices, and the walk back is the same distance as the walk out.

Rules and etiquette

The Forest Service sets the rules; hunting season sets the colors.

The U.S. Forest Service manages Sam Houston National Forest and posts current rules, closures and hunting information on the National Forests in Texas site. At the time of writing, check that page for the pet rules at trailheads, campgrounds and on the trail; we keep dogs leashed everywhere in the forest, because wildlife, hunters and creek crossings make an off-leash dog hard to protect.

Hunting is allowed in parts of the forest in season. During those weeks, wear bright orange, put orange on the dog, and consider staying on busier trails or choosing another weekend. On the trail, yield to other hikers, pack out every bag and keep the dog from drinking from stagnant water. Campgrounds have their own rules on pets and quiet hours, and a dog that barks at night noises needs a crate routine before the first overnight trip.

  • A leash on the dog, everywhere
  • Bright orange on you and the dog in hunting season
  • Yield to other hikers
  • No drinking from stagnant water

When to skip it

Summer, hunting weekends, flood weeks and tick season.

From June to September the forest is humid and hot even in shade, and long miles can overheat a dog quickly. Ticks and chiggers are active much of the year in East Texas woods; apply prevention before the trip and check the dog after every walk. Mosquitoes are heavy near water, so keep heartworm prevention current. Snakes are active in warm months too, and a dog on a short leash on the trail is much less likely to find one than a dog nosing through the brush.

After heavy rain, creek crossings can run high and fast, and trails can flood or wash out. Skip the forest during and after heavy rain, and on the opening weekends of hunting seasons if you are not comfortable sharing the woods. Fall through spring, on cool, dry days, is the best season for a dog. Wildfire risk can also bring burn bans and closures in dry spells, and the Forest Service posts those alongside trail news.

Nearby

Huntsville State Park, Lake Conroe and the Willis and Conroe hubs.

Huntsville State Park, just north of the forest, gives a shorter, more managed walk with a lake and a state park's rules, and our page on it covers the day trip. Lake Conroe, on the forest's edge, is where many local dogs learn water manners, and our Lake Conroe page covers docks, boats and recall near water.

Willis and Conroe families can start with their area hubs for drive times, pickup and the go-home session. For families this far north, the $250 door-to-door transport, which includes the first lesson at home, makes starting simple, and VIP includes transport home and off-leash-level reliability. A follow-up lesson on a local forest trail is a common way to finish a stay for families here, with the family holding the leash.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Are dogs allowed on the Lone Star Hiking Trail?

Dogs are commonly walked on the trail, but check the National Forests in Texas site for the current pet rules at trailheads, campgrounds and on the trail itself. We keep dogs leashed everywhere in the forest, because wildlife, hunters and creek crossings make an off-leash dog hard to protect.

Is hunting allowed in Sam Houston National Forest?

Yes, in parts of the forest in season. The Forest Service posts hunting information and dates on its site, and the areas and seasons change from year to year. During hunting season, wear bright orange, put orange on your dog, and consider busier trails or another weekend.

How do I protect my dog from ticks?

Apply tick prevention before the trip, as your vet recommends, and check the dog thoroughly after every walk, including between the toes, in the ears and under the collar. Ticks and chiggers are active much of the year in East Texas woods.

How far can my dog hike?

That depends on the dog's fitness, age, breed and the weather. Start with short out-and-backs and set the turn-around point in advance. Flat-faced breeds, heavy coats and senior dogs tire faster in the heat. Build distance over weeks, in cool weather.
