Hurricane evacuation with a dog from Houston

Every hurricane season some Houston families stay because they cannot imagine the drive with the dog. That is a fixable problem, and fixing it in April is the difference between a hard day and a dangerous one.

The season

June 1 to November 30, zip-zones by coast, and a drive that can take twelve hours.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and the Houston peak is August through September. Harris County evacuates by zip-zone, with the coastal zones told to leave first and the inland communities, including Cypress, Katy and The Woodlands, usually told to shelter in place; Ready Harris keeps the current map and the shelter list, and both change, so check them in May rather than in the storm. When the coast moves, the highways fill: the 2005 Rita evacuation put families on I-45 and 290 for a day, and contraflow has improved since but the drive is still measured in many hours.

The state and the county open pet-friendly shelters and most hotels along the evacuation routes take dogs during a declared emergency, but neither is a place for a dog that has never been crated or has never slept anywhere but your bed.

What it asks of your dog

Load up on cue, ride for hours, settle in a strange room, and stay quiet through a shelter night.

The dog has to get into a crate and a car on a single word, in the dark, with the family stressed and the neighbors loading too. It has to ride for hours without whining or pacing, drink from a bowl at a gas station, relieve itself on a leash in a strange place, and then sleep in a hotel room or a shelter hall with other dogs barking around it. Every one of those is a skill, and every one is easy to build in a calm April and impossible to build on a September afternoon.

The dog also has to be findable: a collar with a phone number, a microchip with a current registration, and a photo on your phone from this month.

  • Potty on a leash anywhere

How we prepare dogs

Crate calm, car calm and a practice run before the season.

Crate calm and car calm are part of every stay in the training home because every graduate rides home in a car and many ride home in a crate; for a Houston dog the same skills are the evacuation plan. Our trainers build the load-up cue on the driveway, extend the car time on field trips, and run the crate in strange rooms during the stay so the dog learns that the crate is home wherever it is. The kit is your part, and the list below is the one we send families in May.

1

Crate training until the dog rests in a covered crate for hours

2

A load-up cue for the crate and the car, practiced on the driveway

3

Short drives that get longer, with a potty stop on a leash in a new place

4

One night in the crate in a different room, then in a friend's house

5

A kit: records and vaccination proof, two weeks of food and medication, bowls, leash and spare, waste bags, a blanket that smells like home, a photo

6

Your zip-zone, your route and two pet-friendly stops written down in May

7

Leave early. A dog in a crate in a moving car is safer than a dog in a house with the water rising

Nearby and related

Storms, flooded streets, power outages and the weeks after.

A storm that does not trigger an evacuation still floods streets, knocks out power for days and brings the heat back into a house with no air conditioning, and the freeze guide and the flooded-streets guide on this site cover the parts of that a dog owner controls. The hurricane prep guide covers sheltering in place. After a storm, displaced snakes, floating fire ant colonies and standing water are the hazards for the first walks, and the hazards guide covers each. Families in Friendswood, League City and Pearland are in the zones that move first, and their area pages note the transport and crate work we build for them.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do Houston shelters take dogs during a hurricane?

Harris County and the state open pet-friendly shelters during a declared evacuation and Ready Harris lists them, but space is limited, a crate is required and the dog must be under control. Most hotels along the evacuation routes accept dogs during an emergency. Confirm both in May, not in the storm.

Should I leave my dog at home if I evacuate?

No. A dog left in a house that floods or loses power for a week is in danger, and returning to the neighborhood can take days. Every emergency agency says the same: if it is not safe for you, it is not safe for your dog. Build the crate and car skills so leaving with the dog is easy.

My dog hates the car. What do I do before September?

Start now with the crate in the driveway, then the crate in the parked car, then a two-minute drive to a good place, growing over weeks. The car anxiety guide on this site walks through it. If the dog panics rather than fusses, our trainers build it in a stay.

What goes in the dog's evacuation kit?

Vaccination records and rabies proof, two weeks of food and medication, bowls, a leash and a spare, waste bags, a crate, a blanket from home, a current photo and your vet's number. Keep it packed from June 1 and rotate the food every few months.
