Car anxiety
Car anxiety training for dogs in Houston: from the driveway to the vet
Every dog that trains with us rides in a car several times a week, crated, to stores, parks and the lake, and by the end of a stay the car means something good is about to happen. That is the association a car-anxious dog is missing, and it can be built in a couple of weeks.

Nausea or fear
The drooler and the pacer are different dogs.
Motion sickness shows as heavy drooling, lip licking, yawning and sometimes vomiting, usually ten minutes into a drive, in a dog that got in without much protest. It is common in puppies and often fades with age and practice. Fear shows before the car moves: the dog will not get in, trembles in the driveway, pants and paces from the first minute, and may bark or try to climb into the front. Many dogs have both, because a puppy that was sick on its first drives learned that the car is where it feels bad.
Ask your vet about the nausea; the fear is training, and the two are worked together.
- Nausea: drooling, lip licking, vomiting, ten minutes in
- Fear: refusing to get in, trembling, pacing from the start
- Both: a puppy that was sick and learned the car is bad
- The vet for the nausea, training for the fear
Why it matters here
Everything is a drive, and the drive is hot.
Houston is a driving city: the vet, the groomer, the park, the store, the lake and the family in Katy are all a car ride away, and a dog that cannot ride calmly stays home from all of it. The heat adds a layer: a dog panting from anxiety in a car that has not cooled down yet overheats faster, and a family that dreads the drive skips the trips the dog needs. Hurricane season adds the hardest case, an evacuation of six hours with a dog that panics in a car.
The training home's schedule is built on the car: field trips several times a week to stores and parks, crated, with the air on before the dog gets in.
- Vet, groomer, park, store and lake all by car
- Heat plus panic in a warm car
- Evacuations as the hardest drive
- Field trips as the daily practice
How we teach the car
A crate, the driveway, short drives to good places, then the highway.
The dog eats a meal in its crate in the parked car with the doors open, for three days. Then with the engine running. Then the driveway and back. Then five minutes to a field for a game, so the drive ends somewhere good; the vet is one drive in twenty, not the only one. Then twenty minutes on the highway with a stop and a walk. The crate is secured with a strap, the air is on before the dog gets in, the windows stay up, and whining is ignored rather than answered. Two weeks of that and most dogs settle.
For the nauseous dog the drives are short and frequent on an empty stomach, and the vet's advice on medication is followed. For the panicking dog the steps are smaller and the crate work comes first, at home, before the car.

Which program
A lesson and a plan for most, Gold for the dog that panics or has no crate.
Most car-anxious dogs respond to an in-home lesson at $220, where our trainer runs the first steps in your driveway and sets the two-week plan. A dog that panics before the car starts, that has never been crate-trained, or that is anxious about the car and about being alone and about strangers needs the two-week Gold program at $2,500, where the crate calm is built at home and the car becomes ordinary through daily field trips, with a go-home session that includes the drive. The Puppy Development Bundle at $550 or $750 covers the car for a puppy before the association goes wrong.
| Dog | Program | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Drools or whines, gets in with some protest | In-home lesson and a two-week plan | $220 |
| Panics before the car starts, or no crate training | Gold, 2 weeks | $2,500 |
| Puppy under four months | Puppy Development Bundle | $550 / $750 |
Houston specifics
The hot car, the evacuation and the drive to Cypress.
A car that has been in a Houston driveway is an oven, and a dog is never put into one until the air has run; a dog is never left in a parked car in any month from April to October, and the AVMA's heat guidance is why. The evacuation drive is the reason to build car calm in the cool months before hurricane season. And the drive to the training home from Katy, Sugar Land or The Woodlands is the first field trip for every dog that comes to us; families who take the $250 transport get a crated ride with a calm handler, which for a car-anxious dog is often the first good drive it has had.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Why does my dog drool and vomit in the car?
That is motion sickness, common in puppies and often fading with age. An empty stomach, short frequent drives that end somewhere good, and your vet's advice on medication handle it. A dog that was sick on its first drives may also have learned fear, and the two are worked together.
How do I get my dog to like the car?
Feed it in its crate in the parked car for a few days, then engine on, then the driveway, then five-minute drives to a field or a store, then longer. The drive has to end somewhere good most of the time; a dog whose only drives go to the vet learns the obvious lesson.
Should my dog ride loose or in a crate?
In a crate strapped in, for safety and for calm. A loose dog paces, climbs and is a projectile in a stop; a crated dog that already loves its crate settles. Every dog in the training home rides crated to every field trip.
My dog is fine on short trips but panics on the highway. Why?
Speed, noise and the length are new. Build up in steps: twenty minutes on a fast road with a stop and a walk, then longer, with a chew for the stretch. If the dog cannot settle at all, the crate calm at home is the missing piece.
Can you help before hurricane season?
Yes, and that is the right timing. A dog that rides six hours in a crate calmly can go anywhere with you in an evacuation. Build it in the cool months with a lesson and a plan, or in a Gold stay for the dog that panics.
