Freeze events and dogs in Houston: the rare cold week
A Houston dog has never seen ice, and neither has the house. The freeze plan is short because the freeze is short, but the three or four days matter, and the indoor structure is the same one that holds a dog through a hurricane week.

The event
A hard freeze every few winters, and the outage is the real problem.
Houston's average winter has a handful of nights at or just below freezing and one real hard freeze every few years, and the National Weather Service issues the freeze warnings a few days out. The February 2021 event is the one every Houston family remembers: days of ice, burst pipes, and power out across the region while the temperature inside houses fell into the 40s. December 2022 brought another hard freeze with less damage. The pattern for a dog owner is the same each time: the cold is survivable, the outage and the ice are the hazards.
Houston houses have slab foundations, pier-and-beam crawl spaces in the older neighborhoods, and little insulation. A dog on a tile floor in an unheated house is cold within hours, and a short-coated dog or a senior is at real risk.
- Hard freezes every few winters, warned days ahead
- Outages that last days
- Ice on decks, steps and driveways
- Houses that lose heat fast
What it asks of your dog
Patience indoors, potty on a leash in the cold, and a bed off the floor.
The dog has to accept three or four days without a real walk and without going wild, which is a place command and an indoor routine, not a personality trait. It has to relieve itself quickly on a leash in the yard, because ice on a deck or a pool surround is how dogs tear cruciate ligaments in a freeze, and a dog that needs a long sniff before it goes is a dog standing on ice. It needs a bed off the tile in the warmest interior room, a coat if it is short-coated or old, and water that has not frozen in an outdoor bowl.
The hazards are the ones Houston dogs never meet: antifreeze from a burst radiator hose or a spill in the garage, which is sweet and lethal, and space heaters at nose height.
- Place and an indoor routine instead of the walk
- Quick potty on a leash, never loose on ice
- A bed off the floor in the warmest room
- A coat for short coats and seniors
- Antifreeze and space heaters as the hazards
How we prepare dogs
The same indoor structure we build for storms and hurricanes, run for a few cold days.
In the training home a freeze is a training week indoors: place with duration, the crate, food puzzles, trick sessions and the door routine practiced with real deliveries, because the dogs still need a job when the walk is off. That is exactly what a family runs at home. Every stay builds the indoor structure, and the go-home session teaches the family to run it; the freeze is one of the weeks it earns its keep. For the potty trips, a leash and a cleared patch of grass are the whole method.
Two days before: fill water, charge phones, bring the outdoor bowl in, clear a potty patch off the ice
Move the crate and the bed into the warmest interior room
Run place twice a day with duration, and feed meals from puzzles or by hand as training
Potty trips on a leash, short, on grass, never across a deck or a pool surround
A coat on the short-coated or senior dog for every trip
Trick or obedience sessions of ten minutes, three times a day, instead of the walk
Check the garage for antifreeze and keep space heaters behind a gate

After the thaw: burst pipes, standing water and a dog that has been cooped up.
The thaw brings burst pipes and standing water in yards, and the first walk back is a leash walk past debris; the flooded-streets guide on this site covers the water your dog should not drink. A dog that has been indoors for four days needs a structured walk, not a sprint, and the leash-pulling page explains why the first walk is the one to hold firmest. The hurricane prep guide covers the summer version of an outage, when the danger is the opposite one, heat in a house with no air conditioning. Cypress and the northern suburbs freeze a degree or two harder than the inner loop, and the pines come down on the fences.
- Burst pipes and standing water after the thaw
- A structured first walk back
- The summer outage is a heat problem
- Downed pines and fences in the suburbs

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How cold is too cold for a dog in Houston?
Most healthy medium and large dogs handle a short potty trip at freezing temperatures without a problem. Short-coated breeds, small dogs, puppies and seniors need a coat below the mid-40s and should be inside otherwise. No Houston dog should be left outdoors overnight in a freeze, doghouse or not.
Can my dog stay in the garage during a freeze?
Only if the garage is warm, which in a Houston freeze it is not. Garages also hold antifreeze, which is sweet and lethal in small amounts. Bring the dog into an interior room with a bed off the floor and a covered crate.
What do I do if the power goes out for days?
Keep the dog in the warmest room with the family, off the tile, with blankets and a coat if it is short-coated. Run place and short training sessions to keep it settled. If the house falls into the 40s and stays there, take the dog with you to wherever you go; do not leave it.
Why is ice such a problem for dogs?
Because Houston dogs have never walked on it. A dog that sprints across an iced deck or pool surround slips and tears a cruciate ligament, which is surgery and months of recovery. Leash the dog for every trip out and walk it to a cleared patch of grass.
