Coyotes in Houston suburbs and your dog
The call usually comes from a family in Bridgeland or Cinco Ranch whose small dog was taken from the backyard at nine at night, and the sentence is always that they did not know coyotes lived there. They live everywhere in Houston, and the plan is simple.

The animal
Established in every part of the metro, most active at dusk and dawn, boldest in spring and fall.
Texas Parks and Wildlife lists the coyote as present across the state and well established in urban and suburban areas, and Houston is no exception: the bayou corridors, the greenbelts through the master-planned communities, the golf courses, the retention ponds and the undeveloped tracts between subdivisions are coyote habitat, and the Katy Prairie and the wooded acreage north of Cypress and Tomball hold more. They are mostly nocturnal in the suburbs, moving from dusk to dawn, and two seasons make them bolder: the spring, when they are feeding pups and defending dens, and the fall, when the young disperse and turn up in new places. A coyote that has learned to find food in a neighborhood, from trash, pet food or fallen fruit, loses its caution.
A coyote is not a threat to an adult walking a dog on a leash in daylight. It is a threat to a small dog alone in a yard at night, a cat, and a dog of any size that chases one into the brush, where the rest of the group is.
- Bayous, greenbelts, golf courses and retention ponds
- Dusk to dawn, boldest in spring and fall
- Attracted by trash, pet food and fruit
- Small dogs alone at night are the target
- A chasing dog is led to the group
What it asks of your dog
A leash after dark, a supervised yard, a recall that beats a moving animal, and no chasing.
The small-dog rule is supervision: no small dog alone in the yard after dusk, a leash for the last trip out, and a light on. The big-dog rule is the recall, because a shepherd or a hound that sees a coyote at the tree line and goes after it is running into an animal that will lead it to the others, and the fight that follows is one the dog loses; a recall that beats a moving animal is built on a long line over months and is the single skill that protects a big dog. Prey drive is trainable but not erasable, and the leash at dusk is the insurance until the recall is proven. Food outside, an open trash can and a compost pile are the things that bring coyotes to the fence in the first place.
Hazing is the last piece: a coyote that stands and stares should be shouted at, waved at and walked toward, so it keeps its fear of people; a family that quietly retreats teaches it the opposite.
- No small dog alone outside after dusk
- A leash for the last trip out, with a light
- A recall on a long line that beats a moving animal
- No food, trash or fruit left outside
- Calm, loud hazing of a coyote that lingers
How we prepare dogs
A recall built for wildlife, prey drive worked with rules, and the yard routine at the go-home session.
The recall around wildlife is part of every Platinum and VIP stay for a dog that lives near a greenbelt or on acreage, built on a long line in open fields with real distractions and finished in VIP with the Mini-Educator for the dog whose family wants it reliable off leash on their own land. Prey drive gets an outlet with rules, a structured heel, and a leave-it that covers a moving animal. The go-home session for a Cypress, Katy or Tomball family runs the yard routine: the last trip out on a leash, the light, the fence check, the recall from the tree line.
A leash and a light for the last trip out, every night
A fence check for gaps a coyote can pass, and a gate that latches
No food outside: bowls in, trash sealed, fruit picked up
A recall on a long line, built daily, proofed around real distraction
Leave-it for a moving animal, and a structured heel past the greenbelt
The Mini-Educator in VIP for the acreage dog that will be loose
Hazing practiced by the adults: loud, big and walking toward, never retreating

The recall around wildlife, prey drive, the acreage hubs and the yard barking page.
The recall around wildlife guide on this site is the method; the prey drive page is the program for a dog that lives to chase. The Tomball, Magnolia and Hockley hubs cover the acreage dogs that meet coyotes nightly and the boundary work they need, and the Bridgeland and Cinco Ranch hubs cover the greenbelt version. The yard-barking page explains the dog that barks at the fence all night, which is often barking at exactly this, and the hazards page covers the snakes and toads that share the same tree line.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Are there really coyotes in Cypress and Katy?
Yes, everywhere: along Cypress Creek, through the Bridgeland and Cinco Ranch greenbelts, around the retention ponds and on the Katy Prairie. Texas Parks and Wildlife describes them as established across the state's cities. Most families never see one until a small dog goes missing at night.
Will a coyote attack a large dog?
Rarely on its own, but a large dog that chases a coyote is led into the brush toward the rest of the group, and that fight goes badly. The recall that beats a moving animal is the skill that protects a big dog, and the leash at dusk is the insurance until it is proven.
What should I do if a coyote follows me on a walk?
Keep the dog on a short leash, stand tall, shout, wave your arms and walk toward the coyote until it leaves; do not run or turn your back. A coyote that lingers has usually lost its fear of people through food, and loud hazing restores it.
Can prey drive be trained out of a dog?
No, but it can be given rules and an outlet. A recall built on a long line over months, a leave-it that covers a moving animal and a structured heel past the greenbelt make a driven dog safe; a fence and a leash at dusk cover the rest. VIP finishes the recall with the Mini-Educator for a dog that will be loose on acreage.
