Recall and off-leash

How to teach recall around wildlife and coyotes

The acreage dog in Hockley that chases deer off the property and the doodle in Bridgeland that bolts after a rabbit on the greenbelt need the same skill, and both are a sprint from a coyote or a road when it fails. Here is how our trainers build it, and the line past which the honest answer is a leash.

Why it matters

A deer at the tree line, a rabbit on the greenbelt, a coyote at dusk, and a dog with one chance.

Houston's suburbs and acreage are full of wildlife: white-tailed deer on every wooded lot north of 290, rabbits and squirrels on every greenbelt, ducks and egrets at every pond, and coyotes along every bayou and through every master-planned section, moving at dusk and dawn. A dog that chases a deer is led through fences and across roads, and a dog that chases a coyote is led to the rest of the group, which is the way big dogs get killed by small ones. The recall that matters is the one that turns a dog mid-chase, and it is built the way every serious recall is built, on a long line, over months, paid like nothing else, and proofed against the real thing at a distance before it is ever trusted close. The dusk rule underneath it is not negotiable: a leash after dark, because the coyotes are out and a small dog in a yard at nine is a meal.

  • Deer, rabbits, waterfowl and coyotes everywhere
  • A chase leads through fences and across roads
  • A coyote leads a dog to the group
  • A leash after dark, for life

The method

Seven steps, from the jackpot in the kitchen to a deer at fifty yards on a line.

The emergency recall from the companion page comes first, charged for a week and built in the house and yard for a month. Then the wildlife layers, always on a thirty-foot line, always at a distance the dog can respond from.

1

The emergency word charged and built at home and in the yard, paid with a jackpot the dog gets for nothing else, never used to end fun

2

A leave-it for movement: a toy rolled across the floor, a treat tossed, a flirt pole, the dog marked for looking at the moving thing and paid for looking back at you, until the look back is reflexive

3

The long line in open ground with no wildlife in view: the recall paid every time, the dog called before it reaches the end of the line

4

Birds first: ducks and egrets at a pond from fifty yards on the line, the recall paid, closer over weeks until the dog can be called off a duck at twenty yards

5

Rabbits and squirrels on the greenbelt at dawn on the line, the same way, over weeks

6

Deer at the tree line on the line, from as far as the dog can respond, paid heavily, over months; the family's own acreage if they have it, a friend's if not

7

The dusk rule kept for life, a leash after dark on every greenbelt and every acreage, and the Mini-Educator in the VIP program for the dog that will be loose on its own land by day

The mistakes

Trusting the yard recall, letting the chase start, the e-collar without the foundation, and the small dog at dusk.

Trusting the yard recall at the tree line is how dogs end up on the county road; the yard is the first layer and the deer is the last. Letting the chase start, even once, teaches the dog that chasing is the best thing it has ever done, and a dog that has chased a deer for a quarter mile is a harder project for a year; the line prevents the first chase. The e-collar without the foundation teaches the dog that the collar hurts when deer appear, which makes some dogs chase harder and others fear the yard; in the VIP program it is a clear signal on top of a recall the dog already knows. And the small dog in the yard at dusk, with no leash and no light, is the coyote call our trainers get every fall from Bridgeland and Cinco Ranch. The coyote guide on this site covers the yard rules.

Prey drive is never trained out. A hound, a husky, a sighthound or a terrier with a hard chase gets rules and a line for life, and our team says so on the phone.

  • The yard is the first layer, the deer the last
  • Never let the first chase happen
  • No e-collar without the foundation
  • No small dog loose at dusk
  • Prey drive gets rules, not a cure

Proofing around Houston

Deer north of 290, coyotes on every greenbelt, ducks at every pond, and a fall that brings all of them closer.

The acreage north of the training home in Hockley, Tomball and Magnolia has deer on every wooded lot, and the master-planned sections from Bridgeland to Cinco Ranch have coyotes on the greenbelts and ducks at every retention pond, so our trainers have the wildlife layers close at hand: ponds for the birds, the greenbelts at dawn for the rabbits, and open acreage for the deer, all on a long line. Fall brings the deer into the rut and the coyotes into dispersal, which is when both are boldest and when the calls come; the recall built in spring and summer is tested in October. The go-home session for an acreage family runs the recall at the family's own tree line with the line on, and VIP finishes it with the Mini-Educator walked across the property.

When to call

The acreage dog, the greenbelt dog that has bolted once, and the breed that was bred to chase.

An acreage dog that needs to be reliable loose on its own land by day is the VIP program, six weeks at $10,000, with the recall built on the line, finished with the Mini-Educator and handed over at the family's own tree line, with unlimited in-home lessons afterwards. A greenbelt dog that has bolted after a rabbit once and come back is a Platinum case at $3,750, with the recall, the leave-it for movement and neutrality to moving animals built in the training home and lessons afterwards on the family's own greenbelt. A breed bred to chase, a hound, a husky, a sighthound, gets the same work and an honest conversation about the line, which our team has before any program is sold. The prey drive page and the coyote guide are the companions to this one.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can I teach my dog not to chase deer?

You can teach it a recall that beats a deer at a distance and a leave-it for movement, built on a long line over months and, for a dog that will be loose on acreage, finished with the Mini-Educator in the VIP program. The drive is not removed; it is given rules. A dog with hard prey drive lives on a line.

How do I protect my dog from coyotes?

A leash after dark on every greenbelt and acreage, no small dog alone in the yard at dusk, no food outside, a fence checked for gaps, and a recall that beats a moving animal so a big dog does not follow a coyote into the brush. Haze a coyote that lingers: loud, big, walking toward it. The coyote guide on this site covers the yard.

How long does it take to build a recall around wildlife?

Months on a long line: the emergency word for a month at home, then birds, rabbits and deer at growing closeness over the following months, then the Mini-Educator in a VIP program for a dog that will be loose. The practice continues for life, and the dusk rule never ends.

My dog already chases deer off our property. Is it too late?

No, but every chase makes it harder, so the line goes on today and the dog is not loose at the tree line again until the recall is rebuilt. A dog with a year of chasing behind it is a VIP project for the family that wants it loose, and a long-line dog for life for the family that does not.
