Prey drive
Prey drive training in Houston: squirrels, cats, deer and coyotes
The dog that has bolted after a deer in Kingwood, a cat in the Heights or a squirrel at Terry Hershey and nearly reached the road is the prey-drive call, and the honest answer is that the drive stays and the control gets built. It is some of the most rewarding work in the training home.

What it is
An instinct to chase, and a dog that goes deaf when it fires.
Prey drive is the sequence a predator runs: see, stalk, chase, grab. Most dogs have some of it and some breeds, sighthounds, terriers, herding dogs, shepherds, Malinois and the huskies, have a lot. When it fires the dog does not hear its name; the chase is the reward and the name is noise. That is why yelling from the porch does nothing, and why a recall that works in the kitchen means nothing on a trail.
It is not aggression toward the cat or the squirrel; it is instinct, and a dog that chases a cat may live peacefully with the one at home. It is also not fixable by punishment after the chase, which the dog cannot connect to the run.
- See, stalk, chase, grab: the sequence
- Sighthounds, terriers, herders, shepherds and huskies
- The dog goes deaf when it fires
- Not aggression, and not fixable after the fact
Why it matters here
Squirrels on every street, deer in the suburbs, coyotes at dusk and a road nearby.
Houston has squirrels in every oak, cats on every block, deer through Kingwood, The Woodlands and the acreage west of Katy, rabbits on the trails and coyotes in most suburbs at dusk. A dog with drive gets a trigger on every walk and a chase whenever it is loose. The danger is not the squirrel; it is the road the squirrel crosses, the bayou the duck lands on and the coyote that turns around. A chased deer leads a dog a mile from home in the dark.
Acreage families in Magnolia, Fulshear and Tomball live with it daily, and so do inner-loop families with a cat-chaser on a narrow sidewalk.
- Squirrels, cats, rabbits, deer and coyotes
- The road, the bayou and the dark as the real danger
- Acreage dogs that patrol the tree line
- City dogs that lunge after cats on the sidewalk
How we work it
Impulse control with the drive as the reward, a recall built against it, and a line until it is proven.
The drive becomes the reward: the dog learns that a sit, a look at the handler and a release earn the chase of a toy, and that the toy never comes without the control. Impulse control at doors, at the bowl and on the leash builds the same muscle. Then the recall, on a long line, in open fields, then near the things that move, at a distance the dog can hold, then closer, with the dog never allowed to rehearse ignoring the word. Neutrality to the daily triggers, squirrels and cats on the walk, is built the same way on a structured heel.
For a dog that will be off leash on acreage or a trail, VIP adds the Mini-Educator at low levels, introduced only after the recall is solid on the line, so the handler can be heard across a field. The handover walks the family's own property or trail with the dog on the line and then off it.

Which program
Platinum for the recall and neutrality, VIP for off-leash reliability.
The three-week Platinum program at $3,750 builds impulse control, the long-line recall and neutrality to the everyday triggers, with field trips on real trails and unlimited lessons afterwards; the dog goes home reliable on a line and calm on the walk. The six-week VIP program at $10,000 is for the dog that must be trusted off leash on acreage or a trail: complete off-leash reliability with the Mini-Educator introduced properly, transport home and an in-home handover on the property. Gold at $2,500 covers the walk for a dog whose drive only shows as lunging at squirrels on leash.
| Dog | Program | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Lunges at squirrels and cats on leash, otherwise fine | Gold, 2 weeks | $2,500 |
| Bolts when loose, no recall against the chase | Platinum, 3 weeks | $3,750 |
| Must be reliable off leash on acreage or trails | VIP, 6 weeks | $10,000 |
Houston specifics
Water, wildlife and the acreage tree line.
A prey-driven dog near Houston water is a dog that follows a duck into a bayou with alligators and current, and the leash stays on near every bayou and pond until the recall is proven against birds; Texas Parks and Wildlife's guidance on alligators and coyotes applies to every suburb here. Coyotes at dusk will lead a chasing dog away and turn on it, and the acreage families in Magnolia and Fulshear build the recall for that reason before any other. The Kingwood greenbelt and the Woodlands trails are where a deer chase ends on a road. The training home works recall at the lake and in the open fields near Cypress, and the go-home session for an acreage family walks the tree line.

Programs for a dog with drive.
Platinum builds the recall and neutrality on a long line; VIP takes the leash off for the dog that lives on acreage or a trail.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Can prey drive be trained out of a dog?
No. The instinct stays, and the honest work is impulse control, a recall built against the chase, neutrality to the daily triggers, and management near roads and water. A dog with drive that has that work is safe and happy; one that does not is one bolt from a road.
Why does my dog ignore me when it sees a squirrel?
Because the chase is the reward and your voice is noise once the drive fires. The recall has to be built on a long line against the squirrel at a distance the dog can hold, closer over weeks, with the chase of a toy as the reward for coming.
Will an e-collar stop my dog chasing deer?
An e-collar used alone on a chasing dog is a punishment the dog does not connect to the deer. The Mini-Educator in VIP is introduced at low levels only after the recall is solid on a long line, as a way to be heard across a field, and it is taught to you on your own land.
My dog lives peacefully with our cat but chases the neighbor's. Why?
The home cat is family and the strange cat is prey; the drive is triggered by movement and unfamiliarity. Neutrality to cats on a structured heel handles the sidewalk; the home cat is a different relationship and is usually fine.
Is it safe to let a high-drive dog off leash anywhere in Houston?
Only after the recall is proven against the things that move, and only where the rules allow. Near bayous, roads and at dusk, where coyotes are out, the line stays on regardless. VIP graduates are the dogs we trust off leash, and even they earn it place by place.
