Puppy training in Towne Lake: the boardwalk before the puppy is old enough for the lake

Towne Lake is built around the biggest private lake in Houston, with a boardwalk, docks and a retriever in most backyards. A Towne Lake puppy will spend its life around water, and the order matters: the boardwalk from your arms first, the recall and the wait at the edge next, and the lake itself only when the puppy can come back out of it.

The boardwalk first

The Towne Lake boardwalk is the best socialization in Cypress, and it works from your arms.

The rule until your veterinarian confirms the vaccine series is complete, usually around sixteen weeks, is paws off ground that unknown dogs use. The boardwalk is the answer to that rule rather than a casualty of it: from your arms or a mat on a bench, a puppy watches boats, strollers, bikes, other dogs and water birds pass at a distance it can handle, and every calm minute is a deposit.

The pet and hardware stores on Barker Cypress and 290 from a cart give the puppy doors, noise and strangers. After clearance, the neighborhood trails open up on a long line at a quiet hour, and the boardwalk becomes a place the puppy walks rather than rides. The lakeside parks and the dock come last, once the recall is real.

  • The boardwalk from your arms or a mat on a bench, at a quiet hour before a busy one
  • The boardwalk patios from a mat under the table
  • The Barker Cypress and 290 stores from a cart
  • The neighborhood trails on a long line after the vet clears the ground

The four sessions

Four sessions ten minutes from the training home, with the dock rule in the first one.

Session one is in the puppy's first week, and on a lake lot the barrier at the water is set before anything else, because a puppy can be off a dock in seconds. Then the crate goes where the family lives, the potty spot is chosen away from the water, the marker word is taught, and the nipping plan is written for a Lab or a Bernese puppy that will find hands within a day.

Sessions two through four run about a week apart. Sit, the place bed and a recall between rooms come next; then a stay with duration, the recall on a long line along the bulkhead with the puppy learning to come away from the edge, and the first leash walk on your street once the vet has cleared the ground. Session four is on the boardwalk: the same skills in a busy place, and the plan for the adolescent months and the first summer on the water.

Heat and housing

A lake-lot summer: hot boards, a pool and a dock, and an HOA that watches the fence.

From May through September a Towne Lake puppy goes out before nine and after seven, and the dock boards and the pool deck count as pavement: press the back of your hand to them before the puppy walks on them. Potty trips go to shaded grass and the middle of the day goes to the crate. Fire ants come up in new sod after rain, and the mosquitoes over the water make heartworm prevention a first-vet-visit conversation.

The housing is a lake lot with a dock and often a boat, a pool in many backyards, HOA rules about fences and barking, and neighbors with retrievers on every street. Water in two places means a barrier at both before the puppy arrives, and a recall that beats a duck built from the first session. The fence needs walking for the gap under the gate that a small puppy fits through.

  • Before nine and after seven from May through September; the dock boards and pool deck tested first
  • A barrier at the dock and a gate at the pool before day one
  • The fence walked for the gap under the gate
  • Heartworm prevention from the first vet visit; fire ant mounds checked in the sod

Bundle or a stay

The bundle before the lake; a stay at four to five months if the lake dog needs the full set.

A puppy under four months stays home and does the bundle; we do not board puppies in that window. At about four to five months a puppy can hold structure for a full day, and a stay at our Cypress home becomes an option. Gold is two weeks at $2,500 for the manners set; Platinum is three weeks at $3,750 and adds the structured heel, behavior work and field trips, which for a Towne Lake dog include the boardwalk it lives on.

The Towne Lake families who book a stay are raising a big adolescent Lab or Bernese that has outgrown the manners, and the training home is ten minutes away, so drop-off and the go-home session in Cypress are the norm.

Prices

Towne Lake bundle prices, with the training home ten minutes away.

The bundle is $550 at our Cypress training home and $750 at your Towne Lake house. Ten minutes is a short enough drive that many Towne Lake families take the $550 version. The in-home version earns the difference on a lake lot, because the barrier at the water, the dock and the pool gate are half the plan, and the trainer needs to see them.

Once the puppy is past four months, lessons take over at $160 in Cypress or $220 at your house. A later stay is reserved with a $250 deposit; the $250 transport is available but nobody in Towne Lake needs it.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

When can our Towne Lake puppy go in the lake?

After it has a recall and can wait at the edge, which the bundle starts on a long line along the bulkhead in session three. The first swims come later, in warm water, with a life jacket and a calm entry from the bank or a step, never a jump from the dock.

Is the boardwalk too busy for a ten-week-old puppy?

At the right hour it is perfect, and at the wrong hour it is too much. Start early on a weekday from your arms, when it is joggers and a few dogs, and work up to a weekend evening from a mat on a bench. The puppy should be watching calmly, not hiding or lunging; if it is, move farther away and try again another day.

Do we need the $750 in-home version on a lake lot?

It is the better fit if you have a dock, a pool or both, because the trainer needs to see the water, set the barriers and run the recall along your own bulkhead. If your section backs onto a trail rather than the lake, the $550 version ten minutes away in Cypress covers everything the puppy needs.

Our Bernese puppy already weighs thirty pounds. Is it too late to stop jumping?

Not at twelve weeks, whatever it weighs. Jumping is stopped by teaching a sit before every greeting, asking visitors to wait for four paws on the ground and giving the puppy a place bed for the front door. A Bernese that learns it now is a manageable adult; one that learns it at a hundred pounds needs a stay.
