In-home lessons in Spring

In-home dog training in Spring: Klein and Old Town Spring, in your home

Spring is two kinds of dog home. Gleannloch Farms and Champion Forest have HOA rules, sidewalks and pools; older Klein lots have big yards, mature trees and fences that predate the current owners. Old Town Spring adds patios and foot traffic. The lesson is built around which one you live in.

At your house

A Spring lesson is built around your yard, your gate and the road to the greenway.

In a Klein house the lesson starts in the backyard, because that is where the dog spends its day and where the recall has never been tested. Our trainer puts the dog on a long line, calls it away from the fence and the squirrels, and shows you how to make coming back pay. In a Gleannloch Farms house it starts at the front window instead, where the dog barks at every kid on a bike.

Then the gate and the walk. The dog learns to wait at the gate before it opens and to walk your street on a loose leash, our trainer handling the first passes and you the rest, with a jogger or the neighbor's Lab as the live distraction. We finish inside with a place on a bed and a written plan for the week: three short sessions a day, the yard first, then the street.

1

The backyard on a long line: recall away from the fence and the squirrels.

2

The gate: a wait before it opens, every time.

3

Your street on a loose leash, our trainer first, then you.

4

The front window: a place bed instead of a barking post.

5

The plan on paper and the date of the next lesson.

What we see

The old Klein fence, the greenway and the front window are where Spring dogs fail.

Klein lots come with a fence someone built in the 1980s and a Lab that has learned exactly which board gives. The dog gets out, runs the block, and comes back when it feels like it, because nobody has ever needed a recall in a yard that size. It is a training problem before it is a fence problem.

The second is the Spring Creek Greenway, which runs from Pundt Park for miles and carries cyclists, runners and other dogs. A shepherd that has pulled toward all of them for a year lunges by the time it reaches the trailhead. The third is the window. In a Gleannloch Farms or Champion Forest section the houses face the sidewalk, the kids ride past all afternoon, and the dog that barks at each of them is the one the neighbors write to the HOA about.

  • Escaping through a 1980s Klein fence and ignoring the recall
  • Lunging at cyclists on the Spring Creek Greenway
  • Barking at kids on bikes from the front window all afternoon
  • Pulling the length of a Champion Forest walk

Prices

$220 at home in Spring or Klein, $160 twenty minutes away in Cypress.

An in-home lesson anywhere in Spring or Klein is $220 per session, booked one at a time. Spring is one of the shorter drives to our training home, about 20 to 30 minutes via 2920 and 249 or Louetta and the Grand Parkway, so a fair number of families take the $160 lesson at our house instead, especially for the walk. The Puppy Development Bundle for a puppy under four months is four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, $750 at your home or $550 at ours.

No travel fee applies to lessons. The $250 door-to-door transport is a board and train service for pickup and return, first lesson at your house included, and it is part of VIP; most Spring families drop off instead, because the drive is short.

  • $160 at the Cypress training home, 20 to 30 minutes away

Lessons or a stay

Manners take four to six lessons; a dog that lunges on the greenway takes three weeks in Cypress.

Lessons work for the fence, the window, the gate and the pull, because each is a habit with a mechanical fix the family can practice daily. They do not work for a dog that lunges at cyclists with intent, guards the yard from visitors or panics alone in the crate. Those need controlled exposure every day at a distance the dog can manage, and a lesson a week cannot supply it. That dog does better in Gold, two weeks for $2,500, or Platinum, three weeks for $3,750 with behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons afterwards.

From Spring the stay is easy: drop off on the way down 249, pick up two or three weeks later, do the go-home session at the training home and take the follow-up lessons in your yard. The free consultation call is where our team says which path fits, and why.

Around Spring

Meyer Park, Pundt Park and Old Town Spring take the lesson beyond your gate.

When the yard and the street hold, we go out. Meyer Park and Pundt Park are Harris County Precinct 4 parks with open grass for a long-line recall and enough foot traffic to test a loose leash; the precinct's site has the current rules and hours. The greenway from Pundt Park is the final exam for a dog that used to lunge at bikes. Old Town Spring's sidewalks and patios are where the settle is tested with people and food.

From May through September lessons run early or after six, because the pavement fails the hand test by mid-morning and a black dog overheats on a Champion Forest sidewalk fast. The pet and hardware stores along 249 and Louetta carry the afternoon work. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and crate calm goes into any lesson before the first storm.

  • Meyer Park and Pundt Park for recall on a long line
  • The Spring Creek Greenway once the lunge is gone
  • Old Town Spring patios for the settle
  • The 249 and Louetta stores in the heat of the afternoon

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do you cover Klein, Gleannloch Farms and Champion Forest as well as Spring?

Yes, at the same $220 in-home price: Spring, Klein, Gleannloch Farms, Champion Forest, Augusta Pines and Old Town Spring. Klein has its own hub page because the older lots and big yards change the work, but the lesson and the trainer are the same.

Can a lesson fix a recall that fails in our big Klein yard?

Usually, over three or four lessons with daily practice. The dog learns on a long line that coming when called ends well every time, and the line gets longer and the distractions bigger as the weeks go on. A dog that bolts through the fence after deer or a cat needs more, and our trainer will say so at the first visit.

Our shepherd lunges at bikes on the greenway. Is that a lesson?

If it is excitement, yes. If the dog stiffens, stares and lunges with intent, it is reactivity, and the honest answer is a Platinum stay in Cypress where the exposure work can happen every day. Platinum includes unlimited private lessons afterwards, so the greenway work still happens with you holding the leash, once the foundation is in.

What time of day do you come in summer?

Early morning or after six from May through September, so the walking part of the lesson happens on pavement that passes the hand test. If your schedule only allows midday, we do the indoor work at your house and the walk in a store aisle along 249, and move the street walk to a cooler week.
