In-home dog training in Montrose: bungalows, patios and busy sidewalks
Montrose dogs do not have backyards to hide in. They walk to the coffee shop, sit under patio tables on Westheimer, pass a dozen other dogs before breakfast and share a bungalow with a front gate that opens onto a busy sidewalk. A lesson at your address trains for exactly that life.

At your house
How a lesson works in a Montrose bungalow or townhome.
Our trainer comes to your door and the dog stays loose. We want to see the porch, the gate, the window that faces the sidewalk and what the dog does when a walker with a dog goes by. Montrose is full of rescues, so we also ask about the dog's history and what it does when the house is empty. Fifteen minutes of watching tells us what to work first.
Then the exercises, in the place they matter. Our trainer takes the leash for the first repetitions so you can see what a loose leash on a narrow sidewalk looks like and how a dog holds a place with the front door open, and then the leash goes to you with coaching. On a Montrose block the live distractions arrive on their own: a dog across the street, a cyclist, someone on the porch next door.
The plan is written before we leave: three short sessions a day, which blocks to walk and which to skip for now, how long the place command should hold at the front window. If it slips between visits, call our team; the phone is answered from six in the morning to nine at night, and the next lesson opens with whatever did not hold.
Watch the dog at the window, the porch and the gate as the sidewalk goes by.
The right collar and a six-foot leash; no retractable on a Montrose sidewalk.
Sit before the gate opens, until the dog offers it unasked.
Walk the block, our trainer on the leash first, then you.
Place at the front window through ten minutes of foot traffic, then the plan.

What we see
Gate rushing, patio pacing and sidewalk lunging, in that order.
Problem one is the gate. A bungalow's front gate opens straight onto the sidewalk, and a dog that has learned to charge it barks at every passer-by. Problem two is the patio: the dog that will not lie down under a table on Westheimer and stands every time a server passes, so its owner stops taking it. Problem three is the sidewalk, where a rescue with a thin history meets a dozen dogs a day and lunges at the fifth one.
The gate and the patio are manners, and a lesson at the house solves them because the gate and the block are right there. The sidewalk lunger is the one to be honest about. If it is excitement, lessons work. If the dog goes rigid and cannot come back down, that is reactivity, and it needs daily controlled exposure in our trainer's home first.
- Charging the front gate when the sidewalk fills up
- No settle under a Westheimer or Montrose Boulevard patio table
- Lunging at other dogs on a narrow sidewalk
- A rescue that shreds the bungalow when the house is empty
Lessons or a stay
When four lessons are enough, and when the rescue needs three weeks in Cypress.
A Montrose dog with some foundation and an owner who walks it daily anyway is the ideal lesson client. Four to six lessons at $220 cover the gate, the patio and the block. The dog that needs more is the one whose problem is fear or fixation: the rescue that lunges at dogs, panics alone or has bitten. That dog needs two or three weeks of structure, and Cypress is where we do it.
Platinum is three weeks at $3,750 and is the usual answer for a reactive Montrose dog: behavior modification, field trips to real sidewalks and patios, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons afterwards, so the finishing work still happens on your block. Gold at $2,500 is two weeks for a dog that simply has no foundation. Our team says which on the free consultation call and never sells the longer program when the shorter one will do.

Around Montrose
Ervan Chew, the Menil lawns and Buffalo Bayou Park are the next classrooms.
When the gate and the block hold, the lesson moves outward. The Menil lawns are a quiet first field for a long-line recall and a settle on grass with people around. Ervan Chew Park on Dunlavy has a dog park run by Houston Parks and Recreation, and we use its fence line for neutrality long before any dog goes inside; the city's site has the current dog park rules. Buffalo Bayou Park is the loose-leash exam, with runners, bikes and dogs and no room to step aside.
Patios come last, at a quiet hour, with a mat the dog already knows from the living room. From May to September the sidewalks fail the hand test by mid-morning, so outdoor work moves to early morning and evening, and a Montrose lesson booked at noon in July is an indoor lesson on the mat and at the gate.
- The Menil lawns for a long-line recall
- The Ervan Chew fence line for calm around dogs
- Buffalo Bayou Park for a loose leash past runners and bikes
- A Westheimer patio at a quiet hour, mat included
Prices
Montrose prices, in-home and in Cypress.
A private lesson at your Montrose address is $220. The same lesson in Cypress is $160, about 40 minutes away via I-10 and 290 outside rush hour, so almost everyone here books the house call. The Puppy Development Bundle is four sessions for a puppy under four months, $750 at your home or $550 at ours. A Gold stay is $2,500, Platinum is $3,750, and VIP is $10,000 for six weeks with transport and an in-home handover included. Transport for Gold or Platinum is $250 for pickup and return, with the first lesson at your home.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Do you do lessons in apartments in Montrose?
Yes. An apartment lesson works the hallway, the elevator or stairs, the lobby and the first block outside, and the place command inside so the dog can settle while neighbors pass the door. If the building has a dog run we use it for neutrality. The price is the same $220, and the plan is written for your building.
How do we get our dog to relax on a patio?
Teach place at home first, on a mat, until the dog holds it through the doorbell and dinner. Then take the mat to a patio at a quiet hour, ask for five minutes, and leave before the dog fails. Two or three lessons usually cover it for a dog that already has a place command; our trainer builds it if it does not.
Our rescue lunges at other dogs on the sidewalk. Lesson or stay?
It depends on what the lunge is. If the dog can still take food, look at you and settle within a minute, it is excitement and a few lessons on your block will fix it. If it goes rigid, stops hearing you and stays wound up for the rest of the walk, it is reactivity, and that needs the daily work of a three-week Platinum stay with lessons after.
How far is Montrose from your training home?
About 40 minutes via I-10 and 290 outside rush hour, and more at five in the afternoon. That is why the $160 lesson in Cypress is rarely the choice from Montrose, and why families who book a stay usually take the $250 transport, which collects the dog at your gate and includes the first lesson at home.
