In-home dog training in Upper Kirby: Levy Park and the Kirby crowds, at your door

Upper Kirby is a neighborhood you walk. The dog goes to the park, the coffee shop and dinner, and it passes forty other dogs doing the same thing. A lesson at your door starts with the stairs and the sidewalk you use every day, because that is where a good Upper Kirby dog is made or lost.

What we see

Stair barking, sidewalk pulling and the patio that never settles.

The Upper Kirby townhome puts the dog on the third floor and the front door on the first, so the dog rehearses barking at every noise on the stairwell and arrives at the sidewalk already wound up. That is problem one. Problem two is the walk: a young doodle or Frenchie that pulls the whole way to Levy Park because pulling has always got it there. Problem three is the patio on Kirby or West Alabama, where the dog stands, whines, and gets taken home.

The three build on each other, which is why a lesson at the house works better than a class. Calm on the stairs produces a dog that starts the walk under threshold, a loose leash produces a dog that arrives at the patio with something left, and the patio settle is only a place command practiced somewhere new. We work them in that order, at your address.

  • Pulling the length of the block toward Levy Park

At your door

What our trainer does in an Upper Kirby townhome, floor by floor.

We start at the top. The dog is loose, the household does what it does, and our trainer watches the descent: the bark at the landing, the rush at the door, the pull the second it opens. You tell us what you have tried, and we ask who else walks the dog. That first quarter hour sets the order of the lesson, and it is usually stairs, door, sidewalk.

Our trainer handles the dog through the first rounds so you see the mechanics: how a dog is asked to wait at the top of the stairs, how much leash it takes to turn a pull into a heel, what a place looks like with the front door standing open. Then it is your turn, with coaching, on the real sidewalk with whichever neighbor's dog happens to pass.

The plan you keep fits a walking household: the stair drill on every trip out, the heel for the first block and a loose walk after it, place on a mat every evening. Between lessons, our team takes questions by phone from six in the morning to nine at night, and the walker gets a written copy of the plan.

1

Wait at the top of the stairs until released, on every trip down.

2

A sit inside the front door with the door open, held while the sidewalk goes by.

3

The first block toward Levy Park at heel, our trainer on the leash, then you.

4

A mat in the living room for place, five minutes, then through a delivery.

5

The plan, the walker's copy and the next date.

Lessons or a stay

Four lessons for the stairs and the patio; three weeks in Cypress for the dog that lunges.

Most Upper Kirby problems are manners, and four to six lessons at $220 with daily practice fix them in a dog that already knows a few things. The exceptions are the dog that lunges at other dogs and cannot recover, and the dog that cannot be left in a townhome without howling through the shared wall. Both need daily structure and controlled exposure, which a weekly visit cannot deliver. Three weeks of Platinum at $3,750 in our trainer's home does the heavy work, and the unlimited private lessons afterwards bring it back to your block.

Gold at $2,500 is the two-week answer for a dog with no foundation and no behavior problem. VIP at $10,000 is six weeks with off-leash reliability and an in-home handover. On the free consultation call our team recommends one of these, and lessons come first whenever lessons will do.

Around Upper Kirby

Levy Park last, not first.

Levy Park has a dog park close to many of our clients, which makes it tempting to start there. We do not. A dog goes to the park fence for neutrality once it can walk the block on a loose leash, and inside the run only when it can be called out of play. Before that, the classroom is your sidewalk, then the quieter side streets, then the patios along Kirby and West Alabama at a quiet hour.

From May to September, Upper Kirby's sidewalks and the park's paved paths fail the hand test by mid-morning, so outdoor lesson work happens early and late and a midday lesson stays indoors on the stairs and the mat. Levy Park is run by the Upper Kirby district, and its rules and hours can change; check before you go.

  • Your block, then the side streets, then the park fence
  • Inside the Levy Park run only after a reliable recall out of play
  • Kirby and West Alabama patios at a quiet hour
  • Early and late from May to September

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can you teach our dog to be calm on the stairs?

Yes, and it is usually the fastest change of the lesson because the stairs are predictable. The dog learns to wait at the top until released and to descend at your pace, and the barking at the landing fades once the descent is a job instead of a race. Every trip out becomes a repetition, which is why townhome dogs improve quickly.

Is Levy Park's dog run a good place to socialize our puppy?

Not as a first step. A puppy under four months should meet calm, known dogs and lots of people, not a run full of strangers, and the Puppy Development Bundle covers that kind of socialization at your home and on your block. The park fence is a good place for a puppy to watch from once it can hold a sit beside you.

What if we both work and a walker takes the dog at noon?

Bring the walker to the walking part of the lesson if you can, because the dog should hear one rule from everyone who holds its leash. The plan we leave is written so the walker can run the stair drill and the first-block heel on every visit, and it includes our number.

Is a lesson enough for a dog that howls when we leave the townhome?

For mild fuss that stops within a few minutes, a lesson sets up crate calm, place, exercise before you go and a short leaving routine, and the plan runs it daily. For a dog that howls for an hour through the shared wall or damages doors, it is separation anxiety and needs the daily structure of a Platinum stay first.
