Dog training in Upper Kirby: Levy Park, patios and dogs that live around crowds

Upper Kirby has a patio on every block, a dog park at Levy Park and townhomes and apartments full of dogs that walk everywhere. The neighborhood expects a dog to be calm around crowds, and a dog that is not gets left at home. Our job is to make it the dog that comes along.

Upper Kirby dogs

The dog that comes along: crowds, patios and other dogs everywhere.

An Upper Kirby dog walks to dinner. It passes a dozen other dogs on Kirby, waits at a crosswalk beside a stroller, and is expected to lie under a patio table for an hour while its people eat. The dog we meet cannot do the last part, and often the first: it pulls toward every dog, greets every stranger with its front paws, and spends the meal standing, whining or barking at the passing parade.

That dog does not need to be left at home. It needs a place command it can hold outdoors, a structured walk and neutrality toward the crowd, and a stay builds all three in a calm house before proofing them in public. Platinum, with its field trips into stores, parks and sidewalks and its unlimited private lessons afterward, is the program most Upper Kirby families end up choosing, because the follow-ups happen on Kirby itself.

  • A loose leash past a dozen dogs on Kirby
  • A settle under the table through a full dinner
  • A greeting with four paws down, on your word
  • Neutral at the crosswalk with a stroller beside you

Where we train near you

Levy Park, and the patios along Kirby and West Alabama.

Levy Park is run by the Upper Kirby district and has dog runs, lawns and a lot of people; the district publishes the current rules and hours, and the city's dog park page covers the general rules for Houston. We treat a dog run as a reward for a dog that already has recall and neutrality, not as the place to learn them, because a run full of strangers' dogs teaches a green dog the wrong lessons fast.

The patios along Kirby and West Alabama are the final exam, and the sidewalks between them are the daily practice: crosswalks, valets, music, other dogs and people who lean in. During the stay, Platinum and VIP field trips use the public places nearest the training home in Cypress; the in-home lesson and follow-ups use your own block. In summer the sidewalk sessions run early and late and the patios wait for shade.

1

First: a recall that works on a long line in an empty field

2

Then: neutrality on the Kirby sidewalk with dogs passing at a distance

3

Then: a down on the Levy Park lawn while dogs play in the run

4

Then: the run itself, on a quiet weekday morning, for five minutes

5

Only then: the busy weekend run, with a leash in your pocket and an exit plan

How it works from Upper Kirby

Out 59, 610 and 290, or pickup at your townhome door.

Upper Kirby to the training home is about 35 to 40 minutes outside rush hour: 59 to 610, then 290 west toward Fry Road in Cypress. Families who make the drive drop off on the first day and hold the go-home session at the training home on the final one. Everyone else takes the $250 transportation service: we collect the dog at your door, bring it back when the program ends, and teach the first lesson at your home that same visit.

Your dog lives in our trainer's house with a small group of dogs, trains all day in the house, the yard and on field trips, and shows up in your photo and video updates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The six-week VIP includes the transport and an in-home handover. For a townhome dog, the in-home lesson is where the patio, the garage and the sidewalk get their rules.

  • 59 to 610 to 290, about 35 to 40 minutes
  • $250 pickup and return with the first lesson at home
  • VIP: transport and handover included
  • Photo and video updates three times a week

Lessons on your block

In-home lessons in Upper Kirby are $220, and the patio is the classroom.

A private lesson at your Upper Kirby townhome or apartment is $220; the same lesson at the training home in Cypress is $160. Lessons suit a single problem, a family deciding on a stay, or the follow-up after Gold, Platinum or VIP. Here the lesson walks out the door and down Kirby, because a place command that works in the living room and fails under a patio table is not finished.

A puppy under four months gets the Puppy Development Bundle instead: four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, $750 at your townhome or $550 in Cypress. An Upper Kirby puppy learns the crate, potty habits on a townhome schedule, sit, place, stay and recall, and meets the neighborhood's crowds and dogs on our terms before it decides they are terrifying or thrilling.

Programs and prices

Published prices; Platinum is the patio program.

Gold, two weeks for $2,500, installs sit and stay, place, the loose leash, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, and includes one extra lesson once the dog is home. Platinum is three weeks for $3,750, our most popular program, and adds down and stay, a structured heel, behavior modification, public field trips and unlimited private lessons afterward, which is why it produces patio dogs. VIP is six weeks for $10,000 with off-leash reliability, the e-collar, transport and the in-home handover included. Silver is one week for $1,500.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do you pick up in Upper Kirby?

Yes. The $250 transportation service collects your dog at your townhome or apartment, brings it home at the end of the program and includes the first lesson at your door. It is included in VIP. Drop-off in Cypress is about 35 to 40 minutes out 59, 610 and 290 if you prefer the drive.

When is my dog ready for the Levy Park dog runs?

When it has a recall that works around other dogs and can hold a down on the lawn while dogs play in the run. A stay builds both, and our team will tell you honestly when your dog is there. Check the district's current rules before you go, and start on a quiet weekday morning.

Can you teach my dog to lie under a patio table?

Yes. It is a place command taken outside in stages, from a mat at home to a quiet patio to a busy one on a Friday night. The stay builds the duration and the neutrality; the in-home lessons rehearse it on Kirby with your dog, our trainer and a real meal in front of you.

Which program for a townhome dog that pulls to every dog on the sidewalk?

Gold if the pulling is excitement and the dog is otherwise easy: two weeks installs the structured walk and impulse control. Platinum if the pulling has turned into lunging or barking at other dogs, because that needs the behavior work, the field trips and the unlimited lessons that let you rehearse your own block.

How far is Upper Kirby from the training home?

About 35 to 40 minutes outside rush hour, taking 59 to 610 and then 290 out to Fry Road in Cypress. It is a reasonable Saturday drop-off, and it is the drive that most Upper Kirby families hand to us with the $250 pickup and its in-home first lesson.
