Board and train, Montrose

Board and train in Montrose: for the walking neighborhood inside the loop

Montrose is bungalows and new townhomes, busy sidewalks, patios that welcome dogs and a lot of rescues walked everywhere they go. Its dogs need a loose leash past a dog every half block, a settle at a patio table and neutrality on the bayou trail, and the stay is shaped around exactly that.

The stay, from Montrose

Out I-10 and 290 to drop off, or a pickup on your sidewalk before the coffee run.

From Montrose the training home is about 40 minutes out I-10 and 290 outside rush hour, an easy morning drive for drop-off with the food, medications and records. Families who would rather not make it twice add the $250 transport: our trainer meets you at the bungalow or townhome, runs the first lesson on your sidewalk, with the neighbors' dogs and the delivery bikes as the distractions, and drives the dog to Cypress. Day one there is quiet, a settle into a house rather than a run.

The program runs daily from day two, in the training home and on the sidewalks, in the stores and at the lake near it, and you see it in photos and video on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The go-home session is at the training home for drop-off families and on your own block for transport families and VIP graduates, where the walk to the coffee shop, the patio table and the trail are the test that matters.

What a Montrose dog practices

A loose leash past a dog every half block, and a settle under the patio table.

The Montrose dog walks more than most Houston dogs, and every walk has other dogs, bikes, scooters, patio tables and people who want to say hello. The stay builds the structured walk on the Cypress sidewalks, then adds the distractions in order: dogs at a distance, dogs passing close, food on the ground, a stranger reaching in. Place becomes a settle under a table. For the rescues that arrive with fear underneath the pulling, the neutrality is built slowly and the field trips are chosen to succeed.

Back home the classrooms are already there: Buffalo Bayou Park for runners and cyclists, Ervan Chew Park on Dunlavy, a Houston Parks property with a dog park we use for neutrality at the fence rather than for play, the Menil lawns for a settle with people everywhere, and Westheimer's patios for the table. Houston's leash rules apply on the trails and the lawns; check Houston Parks and Recreation for the current dog park rules before you go on your own.

Which program Montrose families choose

Platinum for the reactive rescue, Gold for the friendly puller.

Gold at $2,500 fits the friendly dog that pulls to every patio and jumps on every friend: two weeks of sit and stay, place, the loose leash, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, with a go-home session, one added lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 is the honest recommendation for the rescue that lunges at other dogs, freezes at scooters or cannot be left in a townhome; three weeks buys behavior modification, structured heel, field trips and unlimited private lessons afterwards.

VIP at $10,000 is six weeks with off-leash reliability, the Mini-Educator included, transport and the handover on your sidewalk with unlimited in-home lessons; for a Montrose dog it is the program for the family that wants the trail and the patio finished, not improved. Silver at $1,500 is a one-week refresher for a graduate that has gotten sloppy.

  • Platinum for lunging, freezing and separation anxiety
  • VIP for the finished trail and patio dog

Prices and the deposit

Published prices, a $250 deposit, and a transport that puts the handover on your sidewalk.

The prices are $2,500 for Gold, $3,750 for Platinum and $10,000 for VIP. A $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is credited toward the program. Transport is $250 for pickup and return with the first lesson at your home, included in VIP; from Montrose it is a fair trade against two drives out 290, and it puts the go-home session on your own block, with the neighbor's dog, the bike lane and the patio as the exam. Drop-off is welcome at the training home from 6am to 9pm daily.

Private lessons afterwards are $160 at the training home or $220 at your house; Platinum and VIP include them without limit, and a Montrose family usually books the at-home version for the walk to the coffee shop. Boarding with training refreshers is available to graduates. The pricing page lists every number, and the consultation call is free.

Montrose specifics

Hot sidewalks, patio season and a neighborhood full of rescues.

Montrose sidewalks fail the pavement test by mid-morning from May to September, so the summer walk is early or late and the midday session happens indoors or in a store aisle; the stay runs the same schedule. Patio season is year-round here, and the settle under the table is practiced with food on the floor and servers stepping over the dog. Many Montrose dogs are rescues with a history nobody knows, so fear is treated as fear rather than stubbornness, and the field trips are chosen to succeed before they are chosen to challenge. Mosquito and heartworm pressure runs all year on the bayou.

  • Pavement test before the summer walk
  • A patio settle with food on the floor
  • Fear handled as fear, with field trips chosen to succeed
  • Heartworm prevention year-round

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How far is Montrose from the training home?

About 40 minutes outside rush hour, out I-10 and 290 to Cypress near Fry Road. That is an easy drive for drop-off and the go-home session, and the $250 transport is there for families who would rather have the handover on their own sidewalk.

Will the training hold on a Montrose sidewalk?

That is the point of the field trips and the go-home session. Neutrality is built in stages during the stay, then finished on your block with the neighbor's dog, the bike lane and the patio table as the test. Platinum and VIP add unlimited lessons for the weeks after, when the new habits are still settling.

Our rescue lunges at other dogs. Gold or Platinum?

Platinum at $3,750. Lunging is reactivity, and it needs the three weeks of behavior modification and gradual exposure that Gold does not include. The unlimited private lessons afterwards let our trainers walk Montrose with you until the dog passes other dogs without a scene.

Can the go-home session include a patio?

Yes, for transport families and VIP graduates. Our trainer runs it on your block and can end it at a patio table on Westheimer or Dunlavy, because that is where a Montrose dog spends its evenings. Drop-off families take the session at the training home and practice the patio with a follow-up lesson.

Is the training home really a house?

Yes. It is our trainer's own home in Cypress, with a limited number of dogs at a time, and your dog sleeps in a crate inside, eats on place and trains in the house and on real sidewalks and in real stores. That is why the manners transfer to a bungalow with a small yard.
