Dog training in Montrose: patios, bungalows and dogs that walk everywhere
Montrose is a walking neighborhood. Dogs here go to the coffee shop, sit under the patio table on Westheimer, cross Dunlavy to the dog park at Ervan Chew and walk the Menil lawns on Sunday. A lot of them came from a shelter, which means a history nobody fully knows and a set of habits that need a calm, fair reset.

Montrose dogs
Rescues, patios and a sidewalk that never empties.
The Montrose dog is often a rescue: a shepherd mix from a county shelter, a pit mix from a foster, a hound that came with a name and nothing else. It is loved, it is walked a lot, and it has two problems that get in the way of the neighborhood life its owner wants: it cannot settle under a patio table, and it reacts to some dogs, some people or some noises on a sidewalk that never runs out of them.
Neither problem is fixed by more walks. Both are fixed by structure and neutrality, which a stay installs in a calm house and then proofs in public places full of exactly the distractions Montrose supplies. Platinum is the program for a rescue with a reaction, because it includes the behavior modification, the field trips and unlimited private lessons afterward so you can rehearse your own block with our trainer.
- A settle under the table for the length of a meal
- Neutral to the dog tied up outside the coffee shop
- A loose leash across Westheimer at the crosswalk
- Calm at the front window on a street with foot traffic
Where we train near you
Buffalo Bayou Park, Ervan Chew, the Menil lawns and the Westheimer patios.
Buffalo Bayou Park is the distance walk, with runners, cyclists, skyline crowds and the water; the Buffalo Bayou Partnership site carries its current rules. Ervan Chew Park on Dunlavy has a City of Houston dog park, and the city's dog park page lists its rules; we treat it as a graduation test, not a training ground, because a dog park rewards a dog that already has recall and neutrality and punishes one that does not.
The Menil lawns are the quiet middle: open grass, slow walkers, a place to practice a down with people passing at a distance. The Westheimer patios are the final exam. A dog that can lie under a table through a meal, with servers, other dogs and a bus going by, is a Montrose dog. In summer the sidewalk sessions move to early morning and evening and the patios wait for the shade.
- Distance work on the Buffalo Bayou trails
- A down on the Menil lawn with walkers passing
- The dog park at Ervan Chew only after recall and neutrality are proven
- A patio settle on Westheimer through a full meal

Lessons in Montrose
In-home lessons at $220, and the patio settle taught in five steps.
A private lesson at your Montrose home is $220, or $160 at the training home in Cypress. Lessons suit a single problem, a family that wants to learn before booking a stay, or the follow-up after Gold, Platinum or VIP. In Montrose, the lesson usually walks out the front door and onto the sidewalk, because the sidewalk is where the dog lives.
The Puppy Development Bundle takes puppies under four months through four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, $750 at your home or $550 in Cypress. A Montrose puppy learns crate and potty habits, sit, place, stay and recall, and gets socialized to a neighborhood full of people, dogs, bikes and buses before any of them become scary. Patio manners start with a mat at home.
At home: place on a mat until released, first for a minute, then for a meal
On the porch: the same mat with the street going by
A quiet patio at ten in the morning: the mat under the table, a coffee, ten minutes
A busy patio at six: the mat, a meal, a bus, another dog walking past
Only then the dog park at Ervan Chew, with the recall proven first
How it works from Montrose
Forty minutes out I-10 and 290, or pickup from your porch.
Montrose to the training home in Cypress is about 40 minutes outside rush hour: I-10 west to 290, then out toward Fry Road. Families who drive drop off on day one and return for the go-home session at the training home on the last day. Families who would rather not take the $250 transportation service, which collects the dog at your door, returns it and includes the first lesson at your home.
Your dog lives in our trainer's house with a small group of dogs, trains all day and goes on field trips into stores, parks and sidewalks, and you get photo and video updates on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The VIP program builds in both the transport and the handover at your home. For a rescue with an unknown history, the calm of a house rather than a kennel is the point.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Do you work with rescues that have an unknown past?
Yes, and a lot of Montrose dogs fit that description. The unknown past matters less than the behavior in front of us. We read the dog on the free call and at arrival, use balanced training with fair, consistent boundaries, and choose Platinum when there is reactivity or aggression to work through, because that program includes the behavior work and unlimited lessons.
Can you get my dog to lie under a patio table?
Yes. The patio settle is a place command taken outside in stages: a mat at home, then the porch, then a quiet patio, then a busy one. A stay builds the duration and the neutrality; the in-home lessons rehearse it on Westheimer with your dog and our trainer beside you.
Do you pick up in Montrose?
Yes. The $250 transportation service collects your dog at your bungalow or townhome, returns it at the end of the program and includes the first lesson at your home. It is included in VIP. Drop-off in Cypress is about 40 minutes out I-10 and 290 if you prefer to drive it yourself.
Is the dog park at Ervan Chew a good idea for my dog?
Only once the dog has a recall and neutrality. A dog park rewards a dog that can ignore rude dogs and come when called; it teaches a dog without those skills to practice the wrong ones. Check the city's dog park page for current rules, and let our team tell you honestly when your dog is ready.
How long does a Montrose dog stay?
Gold is two weeks, Platinum three and VIP six. For a young dog that pulls and jumps, Gold is enough. For a rescue that lunges at some dogs or cannot settle, Platinum is the right length, because behavior change needs the third week and the field trips that come with it.
