Puppy training in Magnolia: acreage puppies and the long-line recall

A Magnolia puppy usually arrives at a house with a barn, a horse or two, a long fence line and a tree line full of deer. The recall is not one skill among many here; it is the skill that decides whether the dog gets to use the land, which is why the bundle for Magnolia starts it on day one and runs it through every session.

The four sessions

Four sessions on your Magnolia property, and the recall runs through all of them.

Session one is the week the puppy comes home, and on acreage it starts outside. The trainer walks the property with you: where the fence actually stops a small puppy and where it does not, which door leads to the potty spot, what the puppy can reach in the barn, where the horses are. Then the indoor setup, the crate in the living space, the marker word and name recognition, which is the first piece of the recall. A cattle dog or shepherd puppy also gets its nipping plan that day.

Sessions two through four run about a week apart, and every one includes recall work that gets a little harder. Room to room, then the yard on a long line, then the pasture edge with a horse in view, then somewhere new with a distraction the puppy has never seen. Sit, place, stay and the leash fill the rest of each visit, and the last session writes the plan for months four to twelve.

1

Session one: the property walk, crate placement, the potty door, the marker word, name recognition and the nipping plan.

2

Session two: sit, the place bed, recall from room to room, and the first calm look at the horses on a leash.

3

Session three: recall on a long line in the pasture, stay with a few seconds, and the leash on a quiet road.

4

Session four: recall with a distraction somewhere new, the livestock and wildlife rules, and the adolescent plan.

A Magnolia puppy's calendar

Big lots, hot summers and a long wait for the ground: the Magnolia puppy calendar.

Magnolia's pines throw shade, but from May through September a puppy still goes out before nine and after seven, with the middle of the day spent asleep in the crate. The pavement test applies to the driveway and the barn floor: if the back of your hand cannot rest on it, the puppy's pads cannot either. Fire ants build in pasture and lawn after every rain, and on a big lot the mounds are easy to miss.

Until your veterinarian confirms the vaccine series is complete, usually around sixteen weeks, the puppy's feet stay off ground that unknown dogs use, and on acreage that includes the ditch by the road where the neighbors' dogs roam. Magnolia still has plenty to show a puppy from your arms: the feed stores and the pet store on 1488 from a cart, a downtown patio from a mat under the table, Unity Park from a bench in your lap at a busy hour. Open fields and the park grass come after clearance.

The housing is the lesson. A horse fence stops a horse, not a ten-week-old puppy, so the puppy lives on a long line outside until the recall is real. The barn has feed, tack and a cat, all of which are met on a leash and at a distance so they become boring.

  • Outside before nine and after seven from May through September; the hand test on the driveway and the barn floor
  • The 1488 feed and pet stores from a cart, a downtown patio from a mat, Unity Park from a lap
  • The open fields and the park grass on a long line after the vet's clearance
  • A long line outside on acreage until the recall is real; the barn met on a leash

Bundle or a stay

The bundle builds the recall; a Platinum stay later proofs it around horses and deer.

Under four months the puppy stays home and does the bundle, because a puppy that age learns in minutes, sleeps in hours and needs its family in the room. At about four to five months it can hold structure for a full day, and that is when a stay at our Cypress home is worth considering. Gold is two weeks at $2,500 for the manners set; Platinum is three weeks at $3,750 and is the usual choice for a Magnolia working breed, because it adds the structured heel, behavior modification and field trips.

VIP at $10,000 is the program for the family that wants off-leash reliability across the whole property, with the Mini-Educator e-collar included, transport included and the handover on your land. A puppy that did the four sessions arrives at a stay with a recall that already works on a line, and the stay turns it into one that works without it.

  • Bundle now: four sessions on your Magnolia property, $750, under four months
  • Gold at four to five months and up: two weeks, $2,500, the manners set
  • Platinum for the working breed: three weeks, $3,750, heel, behavior work and field trips
  • VIP for off-leash reliability across acreage: six weeks, $10,000, transport and handover on your land

Prices

Magnolia bundle prices, on your land or at our home.

The bundle is $750 with our trainer at your Magnolia property, and for an acreage puppy that is the version to book, because the recall plan is written against your fence line, your barn and your road. The $550 version at our Cypress training home is about 30 to 40 minutes away via 1488 and 249 outside rush hour, and it suits a puppy in one of the newer sections along 1488 with an ordinary yard.

After four months the same skills continue as private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 on your property. A stay is reserved with a $250 deposit, and the $250 door-to-door transport includes the first lesson at your home, though many Magnolia families drop off.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How long before my Magnolia puppy can be trusted loose on the property?

Longer than the bundle. The four sessions build a recall that works on a long line with the horses in view, which is the foundation; a recall that holds off the line when a deer breaks cover takes months of proofing, or a Platinum or VIP stay after four to five months. Until then the line stays on outside, every time.

Can the puppy be around the horses?

Yes, on a leash, at a distance where it can stay calm and look back at you when asked, from session two onward. The goal is a puppy that finds horses boring, not one that herds them or hides from them. Loose in the barn or the paddock is a later decision for an older dog with a proven recall.

Where do we socialize a puppy in Magnolia before its shots are done?

From your arms and a cart: the feed and pet stores on 1488, a downtown patio at lunchtime, a bench at Unity Park at a busy hour, a friend's house where only vaccinated dogs live. The ditch, the road shoulder and the open fields wait for your vet's clearance, usually around sixteen weeks, because the neighbors' dogs use them too.

Do you work with Malinois and cattle dog puppies?

Often, and they are the puppies where the bundle matters most. A herding or protection breed at ten weeks is testing its mouth, its speed and its people, and the first four months decide whether that drive gets a job or gets loose. The bundle gives it structure and a recall early, and the later stay gives it the heel and the off switch.
