Board and train, Brookshire

Board and train in Brookshire: for the I-10 corridor west of Katy

Brookshire is where Katy's new subdivisions run out and the farmland begins, so the same road can hold a doodle in a fenced yard and a heeler that works cattle. The stay builds the manners the subdivision needs and the recall the bottomland demands.

The stay, from Brookshire

Up 99 to Cypress in the morning, or a pickup on the farm road.

From Brookshire the training home is a straightforward drive: I-10 to 99, north to 290, about 35 minutes outside rush hour. Most families make it themselves, dropping off in the morning with the dog's food, records and any medication, and returning at the end of the stay for the go-home session in Cypress. Families on acreage who want our trainer to see the property add the $250 transport; the pickup includes a look at the gate, the barn and the yard, and the return includes the first lesson at your home.

Inside the training home the first day is quiet and the rest are not. The dog trains every day in the house, on the streets around it, in the hardware and pet stores on 290 and at the lake. Photos and short videos arrive on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. At the go-home session you learn the leash, the place command and the door routine yourself, because the dog only keeps what the family keeps.

What a Brookshire dog practices

A subdivision walk on one side of the road, a bottomland recall on the other.

A Willow Creek Farms dog needs the suburban set: a loose leash past the neighbors' dogs on new sidewalks, quiet at a front window that faces the whole street, a settle while kids come and go, and manners in the Katy Mills area stores that every family ends up in. A Brookshire farm dog needs a recall that works when a hog or a deer moves in the Brazos River bottomland, and a leave-it for chickens and cattle. Both are built the same way: foundation in the house, proofing in public, distance on a long line.

During the stay the public places are the ones near Cypress, and the water work is at the lake near the training home. The bottomland itself is for after the handover, on a long line first: the Brazos bank holds snakes, feral hogs and, near water, alligators, and Texas Parks and Wildlife's species pages are worth reading before any off-leash plan. Fire ants are in every pasture from spring to fall, so the down-stay gets taught on a place board or a clean patch, never on a mound.

  • Quiet at a window facing the street
  • A recall on a long line in open ground

Which program

Gold for the subdivision dog, Platinum for the chaser, VIP for acreage off leash.

Gold is two weeks at $2,500 and covers sit, place, the structured walk, door boundaries, jumping and impulse control, with a go-home session and one follow-up lesson; it fits the friendly Willow Creek Farms dog whose only fault is enthusiasm. Platinum is three weeks at $3,750 and adds behavior modification, field trips into public places and unlimited private lessons; it fits the dog that lunges on the sidewalk, guards the fence or bolts after livestock, and it is the program most Brookshire families choose.

VIP is six weeks at $10,000 for a dog that must be reliable off leash across acreage, with the Mini-Educator included, transport included and the handover and all lessons at your property. It delivers service-dog-level obedience, not a service dog. Our team will not steer a subdivision dog into VIP; the consultation call is for matching, and the honest answer is usually Gold or Platinum.

  • Gold: the friendly subdivision dog
  • Platinum: lunging, guarding, chasing, unlimited lessons
  • VIP: acreage off leash, e-collar and transport in

Prices and the deposit

The published numbers for a Brookshire stay.

The prices do not change with the address: Gold $2,500, Platinum $3,750, VIP $10,000. A $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and comes off the balance. Transport is $250 for pickup and return with the first lesson at home, optional for Gold and Platinum and included in VIP. Hurricane season, June 1 to November 30, is part of the calendar out here as much as in the city, and our team watches the National Weather Service and talks with any family whose stay overlaps a storm threat.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How long is the drive from Brookshire to the training home?

About 35 minutes outside rush hour: I-10 east to 99, north to 290, then a few minutes to Cypress. It is short enough that most Brookshire families drive both ways and take the go-home session at the training home, and long enough that acreage families sometimes prefer the $250 transport for the handover at home.

My dog has started chasing cattle on the neighbor's land. Which program?

Platinum. Chasing livestock is a recall and leave-it problem with adrenaline behind it, and it needs the three weeks, the proofing around real distractions and the unlimited lessons afterward to hold. If you want the dog reliable off leash across the whole property, VIP finishes that with the e-collar included.

Can the go-home session happen at my house in Willow Creek Farms?

Yes, with the $250 transport or as part of VIP. Our trainer runs it at your front door, on your sidewalk and past the neighbors' dogs, which is where a subdivision dog's habits live. If you drop off and pick up in Cypress, the session happens there and an in-home lesson can follow.

Is the training home a kennel?

No. It is our trainer's own house in Cypress with a limited number of dogs at a time, a crate and a place bed in the home, and daily trips into stores, sidewalks and the lake. Dogs from acreage adapt quickly and usually come home with an indoor calm they never had.

What about the summer heat during a stay?

Outdoor sessions move to early morning and evening from May through September, and the hardware and pet store aisles cover the hot hours, so a summer stay trains as many hours as a winter one. Our trainers check pavement with the back of a hand before every walk; the AVMA's heat page explains why.
