How to train a labradoodle
Labradoodles are the most common doodle in the training home after the goldendoodle, and they arrive bouncier: more Lab in the greeting, more poodle in the problem-solving, and a family that has been jumped on for a year. The plan below fixes the bounce without dimming the dog.

The breed in Houston
A retriever's body and a poodle's mind, under a coat that ranges from Lab-short to a heat trap.
The labradoodle crosses a Labrador with a standard poodle, and the result is a forty-to-seventy-pound dog with the Lab's love of people, food and water and the poodle's speed of learning and occasional sensitivity. The coat is a lottery: some labradoodles have a short, shedding Lab coat that handles a Houston summer like a Lab does; most have a wavy or curly coat that needs a groomer and traps heat, and those dogs live on the dawn-and-dusk schedule from May through September. The Lab half means the dog goes into every retention pond in Bridgeland and every pool in Katy, and the poodle half means it works out the gate latch.
What our trainers see: a dog that jumps on every guest, mouths hands and sleeves as an adult, pulls toward every dog and person, cannot settle at a patio and treats water as a right. All of it is manners, and manners train fast in this mix.
- Forty to seventy pounds of enthusiasm
- A coat that is either Lab-short or a heat trap
- Goes into any water it can reach
- Learns fast, including the gate latch
- Jumping and mouthing as the signature problems
The puppy months
Eight weeks to six months: the greeting rule, the mouth and the water.
A labradoodle puppy is a Lab puppy with a better memory, so the greeting rule, four paws on the floor before anyone says hello, is taught in week one and it sticks if every visitor follows it. The mouth is the second project: redirect to a toy every time, end the game when teeth touch skin, enforce naps. The crate with meals inside it and alone time in small doses come next, because the poodle half worries about solitude. The walk begins at the knee with a treat in the yard. And the water rule starts early: a wait at the edge of anything wet and a recall out, on a leash first, because the first time a labradoodle puppy goes into the community lake unasked is the last time it asks.
- The greeting rule taught in week one and enforced by every visitor
- The mouth redirected, the game ended, naps enforced
- The crate with meals inside and alone time in doses
- The walk at the knee in the yard
- A wait at the edge of any water from the first month
Adolescence
Six to fourteen months: the manners vanish, the bounce doubles, the poodle starts thinking.
Labradoodle adolescence is loud: the puppy that sat for guests starts leaping at them, the walk becomes a drag toward every dog, the recall evaporates near water, and the poodle brain starts solving problems like the pantry door. It is normal and it is temporary if the family goes back to the leash and the rules with more consistency and less freedom: a structured walk taught from a standstill, place with duration during greetings, a long line near any water, and a daily job that uses the brain so the dog has less energy for inventing things. A labradoodle worked through this stretch settles into a superb family dog at fourteen to eighteen months.
Eight to twelve weeks: crate, place, the greeting rule, the mouth, the name
Three to five months: the walk at the knee, the wait at the water, store trips, the puppy bundle if you want help
Five to seven months: the structured walk on the street, recall on a long line, the settle at a quiet patio
Seven to ten months: the bounce met with place during greetings and the leash on the walk
Ten to fourteen months: neutrality proofed on trails and at the boardwalk, the water recall at a lake
Fourteen months on: freedom earned, the pool rule transferred, the dog you can take anywhere
Every day for life: a job for the poodle brain and a fetch with rules for the Lab body
The problems we see
Jumping, mouthing, pulling, the patio and the pond.
Jumping is a greeting rule and place with duration, and in a labradoodle it is the one call we get most. Mouthing as an adult is a rule about what is allowed in the mouth, taught with trades and a chew that is always available, and it usually rides along with too little sleep and too much excitement. Pulling is a structured walk taught from a standstill, paid at the knee. The patio settle is place proofed under a table, and the doodle learns it in a week. The pond is the serious one: a labradoodle in a Houston retention pond is a dog in alligator water, and the wait at the edge and the recall out are built on a long line at a lake before either is trusted anywhere.
Anxiety about being alone is the quieter problem, and the crate and alone time on purpose from puppyhood prevent most of it.
- A greeting rule and place for the jumper
- Trades, a chew and more sleep for the mouth
- A structured walk from a standstill
- Place proofed under a patio table
- A wait at the edge and a recall out, before any pond
Summer and enrichment
The coat sets the hours, the Lab wants to swim, and the poodle wants a puzzle.
A curly labradoodle in a Houston summer lives on the dawn-and-dusk schedule with the pavement test at the door and the groomer every six to eight weeks, coat kept short but never shaved to the skin; a short-coated one has a Lab's summer, still early and late but with more margin. The Lab half wants a swim, and a swim with a recall at the end is the best summer exercise there is, followed by a towel for the curly coat. The poodle half wants a puzzle, and the afternoons are for a search for kibble, a trick session, obedience with duration and a store aisle. A labradoodle with both halves satisfied is a calm dog by evening.
- Dawn and dusk for the curly coat, the pavement test always
- The groomer every six to eight weeks, never to the skin
- A swim with a recall as the summer exercise
- Puzzles, searches and tricks for the poodle brain
- Store aisles for the afternoon walk
Which program
Gold for the bounce, Platinum for the anxious or reactive one, the bundle for the puppy.
Gold, two weeks at $2,500, is the labradoodle program most often, because the problems are manners: place, the calm greeting, the structured walk and impulse control, handed over in a go-home session that teaches the family the greeting rule. Platinum, three weeks at $3,750, is for the labradoodle that lunges on the trail, panics alone or needs the water manners built at the lake, with unlimited lessons afterwards. The Puppy Development Bundle, $550 in Cypress or $750 at home, is where the greeting rule and the water rule begin for a puppy under four months. The labradoodle training page covers each in Houston terms.
The programs
Programs labradoodles usually need.
Gold for the bounce and the manners, Platinum for the worrier or the lunger, the bundle for the puppy.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Are labradoodles easy to train?
Yes. The poodle brain learns in a few repetitions and the Lab heart wants to please, so a labradoodle picks up place, the greeting rule and the walk quickly. The difficulty is enthusiasm: the dog knows the rule and jumps anyway until the family enforces it every time.
Why does my labradoodle jump on everyone?
Because it works: people talk to a jumping doodle. The fix is a greeting rule every visitor follows, four paws on the floor before anyone says hello, and place with duration during arrivals. A labradoodle that has jumped for a year learns the new rule in a couple of weeks if nobody breaks it.
Do labradoodles shed?
Some do, with a Lab-type coat; most have a wavy or curly coat that sheds little and mats a lot, needing a groomer every six to eight weeks. In Houston the curly coat is a heat trap, so summer walks are early and late and the coat is kept short but never shaved to the skin.
Can I let my labradoodle swim in the neighborhood lake?
Not in a Houston retention pond or community lake, which can hold alligators and usually prohibit it. Build the wait at the edge and the recall out on a long line at a sanctioned lake, and use them at the pool and the swimming spots in the guide on this site.
