Drive, channeled properly

Board and train for working breeds in Houston: shepherds, Malinois, corsos

A working breed without a job invents one, and the job he invents is usually guarding the front window, the fence line or you. These dogs are the most rewarding to train and the least forgiving of half measures. This page is for the owner who has a shepherd, a Malinois or a corso and wants a program that respects what the dog is.

Who brings a working dog

Working-breed board and train fits owners who bought the drive and now need the control.

The shepherd who guards the house. German shepherds and Dutch shepherds in Cypress and Tomball are bought for the look and the loyalty, and by eighteen months they are barking at every passer-by, charging the fence and stiffening when a guest walks in. That is a dog doing his job without instruction. Platinum supplies it: obedience, behavior modification for the reactivity, and field trips where strangers stop being a threat.

The Malinois who is too much dog. A Malinois in a suburban home in Katy with two walks a day is a problem waiting to happen. This breed needs a handler who can direct the drive, and the VIP program is often the right one, because six weeks and an e-collar give the dog a job he can do off leash and the owner a way to communicate at distance.

The corso, Rottweiler or Doberman with a bite history or a hard growl. Guardian breeds carry consequences a Lab does not, and a growl at a child is a serious matter. Aggression is one of our trainers' three specialties, Platinum is the minimum, and the handover includes management rules alongside the training, because honesty matters more with a 110-pound dog.

  • Shepherds who guard the window, the fence and the family
  • Malinois and Dutch shepherds with more drive than the household can use
  • Corsos, Rottweilers and Dobermans with a growl or a bite record
  • Owners with land who want an off-leash working dog they can trust

The stay for a driven dog

A working breed's program gives the drive a direction before it corrects anything.

Drop-off at the Cypress training home or by $250 transport; VIP includes it. The first days are structure, not suppression: crate, place, a structured walk and meals for obedience. A working dog relaxes when someone competent is clearly in charge, and most guardian breeds settle within two days once the house has predictable rules.

Obedience is built with rewards and markers first, then a fair boundary and the tool that fits the individual dog. For Platinum dogs, weeks two and three add the structured heel, down/stay with duration, behavior modification with the trigger at a controlled distance and field trips into stores, lots and trails. VIP dogs continue for three more weeks: e-collar conditioning, long line, off-leash proofing and an in-home handover.

1

Days 1 to 3: crate, place, marker words and a structured walk; a baseline video of the fence line and window response.

2

Days 4 to 7: sit/stay, place/stay, door boundaries and leash pressure with a tool chosen for the dog's strength and sensitivity.

3

Days 8 to 11: structured heel, down/stay with duration, front and center positioning; impulse control at the door and the truck.

4

Days 12 to 16: behavior modification: strangers at the door, dogs on the sidewalk and traffic at a distance the dog can handle, closing in as he stays under threshold.

5

Days 17 to 21: field trips to stores along 290, a busy parking lot and the lake path; Platinum dogs finish with the comprehensive handover.

6

Weeks 4 to 6 (VIP): Mini-Educator conditioning on known commands, long line in public, off-leash heel and recall on trails and at the lake, transport home and the in-home handover.

Houston specifics

Working breeds in Houston live on acreage, behind HOA fences and in the heat, and the proofing matches.

The shepherd on five acres in Magnolia and the corso behind a six-foot fence in Cinco Ranch have different lives and the same instincts. Fence aggression is drilled at the training home's own fence line with dogs and people passing; gate and door boundaries are proofed against a delivery driver; and for VIP dogs, off-leash work runs on trails around Cypress and the Sam Houston National Forest where deer and hogs test the recall. Texas Parks and Wildlife covers what lives out there.

Heat is the constraint. Heavy-coated shepherds and black-coated Dobermans and Rottweilers overheat quickly, so from May through September outdoor sessions run before 8am and after 7pm, and the drive work moves indoors and into stores at midday, following the AVMA's heat guidance. HOA rules on fencing and dogs vary by community; check yours with the association.

  • Fence line, gate and door proofing against passers-by and deliveries
  • Trail and forest recall for VIP dogs, with wildlife as the test
  • Summer drive work at dawn and dusk; heavy coats and black coats get the shortest outdoor blocks
  • Tomball, Magnolia and Katy owners are 25 to 40 minutes away; transport is $250 or included in VIP

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Which program is best for a German shepherd in Houston?

For most adult shepherds, Platinum at $3,750, because the breed's typical problems, guarding, reactivity to strangers and a strong pull, need behavior modification and public field trips, not just manners. A shepherd whose owner wants off-leash reliability on land goes into the six-week VIP at $10,000. Our trainers decide on the free call.

Can you train a Belgian Malinois in a home setting?

Yes, and a home is the right setting, because the Malinois has to learn to be calm in a house, not just to work in a field. Our trainers give the drive a direction through obedience, structured heel and, in VIP, off-leash work with the e-collar, and then teach the owner to keep the dog's brain occupied at home.

Do you take cane corsos or Rottweilers with a bite history?

Often, after a detailed conversation on the free phone consultation about what happened and to whom. Aggression is one of our trainers' specialties, Platinum is the minimum program, and the handover includes management rules. What we will not do is promise that a guardian breed with a bite history can be left unsupervised with strangers or children.

Is the e-collar necessary for a working breed?

Not for Platinum, where tools are chosen for the individual dog and taught at the handover. For VIP, the Mini-Educator is included because off-leash reliability at distance from a high-drive dog requires clear communication the voice cannot carry. It is introduced after the obedience is built, at the lowest level the dog notices.

How much is board and train for a working breed in Houston?

Platinum is $3,750 for three weeks and VIP is $10,000 for six, with Gold at $2,500 for a working dog who needs only manners. Transport is $250 and included in VIP. The $250 reservation deposit is credited against whichever program is booked.
