Belgian Malinois training in Houston: what the breed needs and which program fits
The Malinois is the breed people buy after watching a video and the breed they call us about at ten months. There is nothing wrong with the dog. It is doing exactly what it was bred to do, in a suburb, with no shift to clock into. Our Cypress training home gives it one. This page explains how and what it costs.

Heat, housing, drive
A Malinois brings a working engine, a dense coat and a fast trigger into a Houston home, and the heat does not slow it down.
Heat is the first danger with this breed, not because the coat is unusually heavy but because the dog will not stop. A Malinois in drive will work through the warning signs the AVMA lists and keep going until it is in trouble, so we stop for it. From May to September our sessions run at dawn and after dark, water goes out every twenty minutes, and the session ends on a timer rather than on the dog's opinion. Midday is place work, crate rest and indoor obedience.
Housing decides the shape of the problem. A Malinois in a Bridgeland house with a fence, two kids and a trail behind it herds the children, patrols the fence and fixates on cyclists. A Malinois on acreage in Hockley or Magnolia chases deer, finds coyotes and disappears. A Malinois in a Midtown apartment paces. None of these homes is wrong, but each needs a different plan and we build for the one you live in.
The drive is the whole point of the breed. The AKC describes the Malinois as confident, smart and hardworking, and hardworking is the operative word: it needs a job every day, not a walk. Engagement, obedience under pressure and a clear standard are what tire a Malinois, and that is what a stay with us is.
- Sessions end on a timer in summer, not on the dog's say-so
- Suburb, acreage and apartment each shape the plan
- A job every day, not a walk
- Training tires this breed; mileage does not

What we see most
Herding the kids, fixation on anything moving, a recall that loses to a squirrel and a dog that never rests.
Nipping is the first call, and it is almost always aimed at running children or a jogging owner. The dog is herding, with the bite drive of a protection breed behind it, and the household has no legal outlet for either. Tug and retrieve with an out and a set of rules turns the bite into something the dog does with permission and stops doing without it.
Fixation is the second. On the Spring Creek Greenway a Malinois locks onto a cyclist at eighty yards and stops hearing anything. The same lock lands on the dog next door through the fence. Fixation is broken with engagement, the dog choosing its handler over the environment, and then rebuilt at distance until a cyclist is boring.
The recall and the off switch are the third pair. Most Malinois owners want the dog off leash, and most Malinois recalls fail the first time a rabbit runs, because they were never proofed against motion. And in the house, the dog never stops: pacing, shadowing, carrying a toy from room to room. Place with long duration is not a nicety for this breed. It is the missing skill.
- Nipping running children and joggers
- Locking onto cyclists, dogs and deer
- A recall that has never been tested against motion
- Pacing and shadowing instead of resting
The stay, built for the Malinois
How a Malinois stay runs in our Cypress home: engagement, then a standard, then distance, then the e-collar, then freedom.
A Malinois stay is built in layers, and no layer is skipped because the dog looks brilliant at the previous one, which it always does. The first days are engagement: the trainer becomes the most interesting thing in every environment, which for this breed means outcompeting a moving world. Then obedience is held to a standard a working dog respects, because a Malinois allowed to be ninety percent reliable finds the other ten.
Distance and freedom come last. Long-line recall past movement, then the Mini-Educator introduced at low levels as a communication tool once the recall already works, then off-leash proofing in real places: Kleb Woods trails, Fry Road parking lots, the lake. Updates arrive on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so you can see each layer set before the next one goes on.
Engagement: the handler outcompetes everything that moves.
Structured heel held to a working standard past joggers, cyclists and dogs.
Place with long duration through the household's noise, building the off switch the breed lacks.
Tug and retrieve with an out, so the bite has rules and a legal outlet.
Long-line recall proofed against motion: balls, dogs, wildlife at the lake.
Mini-Educator at low levels for communication at distance, only after the recall holds.
Off-leash proofing on trails and in lots, then an in-home handover with unlimited in-home lessons after.
Programs and prices
VIP for most Malinois, Platinum for the one with a foundation, and no shortcuts for either.
The six-week VIP Service-Dog-Level Board & Train is $10,000 and it is built for this dog: service-dog-level obedience, complete off-leash reliability, front and center positioning, duration stays, the Mini-Educator included and taught to you, transport home, an in-home handover and unlimited in-home lessons with lifetime support. Six weeks is what it takes to hold a working breed to a working standard and then transfer that standard to you.
The three-week Platinum is $3,750 and suits a Malinois that already has engagement and a heel and needs neutrality, behavior modification for fixation and public field trips, with unlimited private lessons afterward. A Malinois puppy under four months starts in the Puppy Development Bundle ($550 in Cypress, $750 in-home), where the bite gets rules before it has teeth to match.
| Program | Length | Price | When it fits a Malinois |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platinum Board & Train | 3 weeks | $3,750 | A foundation already in place; fixation and neutrality to fix |
| VIP Service-Dog-Level | 6 weeks | $10,000 | Off-leash reliability, the e-collar taught properly, a working standard |
| Puppy Development Bundle | 4 sessions | $550 / $750 | Under four months: bite rules and engagement before adolescence |

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How much does Belgian Malinois training cost in Houston?
The six-week VIP program is $10,000 and is what most Malinois need, with the Mini-Educator, transport home and unlimited in-home lessons included. The three-week Platinum is $3,750 for a dog that already has a foundation. The Puppy Development Bundle for pups under four months is $550 in Cypress or $750 in-home.
Why do you recommend VIP for a Malinois instead of Platinum?
Because the goal with this breed is almost always off-leash reliability around motion, and that takes six weeks to build and proof properly. Platinum's three weeks build neutrality and a heel but do not include the e-collar, the off-leash work or the in-home handover. For a Malinois that already has those pieces, Platinum is the right call, and we will say so.
Can a Malinois live in a Houston suburb?
Yes, with a job. Suburban Malinois in Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch and The Woodlands do well when they have daily engagement work, a structured heel on the trails and an off switch on a place bed. They do badly with a walk and a backyard. The stay installs the structure; the family has to keep giving the dog work.
Is the e-collar necessary for a Malinois?
For off-leash reliability at distance and around moving things, the Mini-Educator gives a clear signal the dog can feel across a field. It is introduced only after the recall works on a long line, at low levels, and it is taught to you in the in-home handover. It is included in VIP and it never replaces the training underneath it.
My Malinois nips the kids when they run. Is that aggression?
Usually it is herding plus bite drive with no outlet, not aggression, but at this breed's speed it still needs fixing now. The stay gives the bite legal rules through tug and retrieve, builds a place command so the dog is not loose when the kids play, and gives the dog work.
