How to train a Belgian Malinois
The Malinois became famous for what it can do in the hands of professionals, and a lot of Houston families bought one expecting a smarter shepherd. What they got is a dog that runs at full speed all day and treats a bored afternoon as a problem to solve. This guide is about giving that dog a job.

What you bought
A dog bred for police and protection work that does not turn off when the shift ends.
The Malinois was built for bite work, detection and herding, and the traits that make it superb at those, high drive, a fast trigger, a need to work and a strong bite, do not come with a switch. A Malinois with nothing to do at two in the afternoon will herd the kids, chew the drywall, shadow you with a toy or fixate on the dog next door. None of that is misbehavior in the dog's mind. It is a working day with no work.
Owners who do well with the breed run, bike, train or work the dog daily and hold it to a clear standard. Owners who wanted a couch dog are the ones who call at ten months.
- Drive that does not turn off
- A fast trigger and a strong bite
- Needs a daily job, not a walk
- Thrives on a standard

What arrives
Nipping and herding the family, fixation, and a recall that loses to anything moving.
The Malinois cases that reach Cypress are usually an adolescent that nips at running children, herds the household, cannot settle, and has started fixating on dogs or joggers on the Bridgeland trails. Add acreage in Hockley or Tomball and you get a dog that chases deer and disappears, with a recall that was never proofed against a running animal.
The fix is not more exercise, which just builds a fitter dog with the same problem. It is engagement, an off switch and a recall built in layers.
The training order
Engagement, then the heel, then the off switch, then the outlet, then distance.
Engagement comes first: the dog choosing to look at you as the source of everything good. The structured heel channels the drive into moving with you. Place with long duration builds the off switch that does not come standard. Then the drive gets an outlet, tug and retrieve with rules, so the bite goes somewhere legal. Only then is distance added: recall past moving things, on a long line, then with the Mini-Educator at low levels for communication across a field.
Every stage is held to a standard. A Malinois that is allowed to be ninety percent reliable will find the ten percent.
Engagement: the handler is the best thing in the environment.
Structured heel until the leash is slack past joggers and dogs.
Place with duration through the household's chaos.
Tug and retrieve with an out, so the bite has rules.
Long-line recall past moving distractions.
Mini-Educator at low levels, then off-leash proofing (VIP).
Houston specifics
Heat, acreage and a breed that runs through it all.
A Malinois will work itself into heat stroke, so summer sessions run at dawn and dusk with water every twenty minutes and a hard stop, and the midday job is place and indoor work. Acreage families in Hockley, Waller and Tomball need boundaries and a wildlife-proof recall before the dog is trusted off a line; coyotes are common there and a Malinois will engage one. Suburban families need neutrality on the trails, where a fixated Malinois is a liability.
- Hard stop times in summer
- Wildlife recall before any freedom
- Trail neutrality in the suburbs

Which program
VIP is the honest fit; Platinum for the family Malinois with a foundation.
The six-week VIP program ($10,000) is built for exactly this dog: service-dog-level obedience, complete off-leash reliability, the Mini-Educator introduced properly, transport home and an in-home handover with unlimited in-home lessons afterwards. Our founder's background training high-drive animals on a farm is the fit. The three-week Platinum ($3,750) suits a Malinois that already has a foundation and needs neutrality, a heel and behavior modification. Neither is optional for this breed; a Malinois without training is a problem waiting for a victim.
The programs
Programs built for a working dog.
VIP for the finished Malinois. Platinum for the one with a foundation.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is a Belgian Malinois a good family dog?
For an active family that trains daily and holds a standard, yes. For a family that wanted a smart pet, rarely. The drive that makes the breed superb at work does not switch off, and an under-worked Malinois herds, nips and fixates. Training gives it the job it needs.
How do I stop my Malinois nipping the kids?
Nipping running children is herding and bite drive with no outlet. Give the bite a legal outlet with tug and retrieve with rules, build place so the dog is not loose when the kids run, and get the dog a daily job. If it has started at ten months, a stay is the honest fix.
Do Malinois need an e-collar?
For complete off-leash reliability at distance and around moving things, the Mini-Educator gives a clear signal the dog can hear across a field. It is introduced only after the recall is solid on a long line, at low levels, and taught to you in the VIP handover. It is a communication tool, never the whole plan.
How much exercise does a Malinois need?
More than a walk, but exercise alone builds a fitter dog with the same problems. The breed needs work: engagement, obedience under pressure, a structured job. An hour of training tires a Malinois more than three miles of running.
Which program is best for a Belgian Malinois?
The six-week VIP Service-Dog-Level program for most owners: off-leash reliability, the e-collar taught properly, and unlimited in-home lessons afterwards. Platinum fits a Malinois that already has a foundation and needs neutrality and a heel.
