Yorkshire terrier training in Houston: small dog, big attitude, real obedience

The most common mistake with a Yorkie is treating it like a toy instead of a terrier. It is a terrier. It wants a job, a rule and a reason, and when it gets none of those it invents a career in security. This page is about giving it a better one.

The breed

What Yorkies are like to train: a ratting terrier that learns fast and forgets nothing.

The Yorkshire terrier is a toy breed with a working past: it was developed in the north of England to clear rats out of textile mills, and the AKC still describes it as feisty and sprightly. The coat is fine, silky and more like hair than fur, which is why so many Yorkies live in a short trim. Under it is a tough, sharp, bossy little dog that learns fast and forgets nothing, including every time barking got it carried away from the thing it was barking at.

Between eight and eighteen months the confident puppy becomes the dog that runs the house. It barks at the window, the doorbell, the neighbor and the television. On leash it screams at a Lab across the street and gets picked up, which teaches it that screaming works. Some Yorkies snap at hands that reach for the collar or the brush. House training is often unfinished, because the accidents are small and the dog is quick to protest going out in the rain.

The stay

How a Yorkie's stay works: the same obedience as a big dog, with nobody carrying it out of trouble.

A Yorkie's stay in our Cypress home is run like any other dog's, and that is the point. It earns its meals with a sit, waits at doors, holds a place bed and walks on a loose leash past dogs ten times its size. Our trainers do not carry it out of trouble. They give it a job, hold the standard and reward the dog for meeting it. Terriers relax once someone else is clearly making the decisions.

Handling is built in short pieces, collar and brush and paws with rewards first, until a hand reaching in predicts something good. Leash reactivity is worked at a distance the Yorkie can hold and closed a little each day on quiet Cypress streets and then the busier trails at Towne Lake. Updates arrive Monday, Wednesday and Friday with photos and video, and the go-home session hands you a dog that listens to you, not just to us.

1

Earned meals, door waits and a place bed with real duration, so the Yorkie stops running the house.

2

A quiet cue at the window and the doorbell, rewarded before the barking starts.

3

Collar, brush and lift handled a few seconds at a time with the reward first.

4

Loose leash walking on Cypress sidewalks, then past other dogs at a distance that shrinks daily.

5

Store aisles along 290 for calm around strangers, carts and other dogs.

6

The go-home session, with the leash in your hand and the rules written down for every adult.

Houston

Houston specifics for a Yorkie: hot pavement at ankle height, hawks over the yard, and a window on the street.

A seven-pound dog is close to the pavement, and the pavement in a Houston July will burn its pads. From May through September Yorkie sessions run at dawn and after sunset, and the pavement is tested with the back of a hand first. The silky coat does not hold heat the way a double coat does, but a Yorkie in a full show coat is still hot, so a short trim before the stay is welcome.

Most Yorkies we see live in townhomes, apartments and suburban houses with a front window at dog height. A Yorkie in a Midtown high-rise needs elevator manners and a potty plan; a Yorkie in Cinco Ranch needs the window and the doorbell handled. Big dogs on the Heights hike-and-bike trail are a daily test. Hawks and owls are a real concern for a dog this size in the outer suburbs and on acreage, so yard time is supervised, and fire ant mounds are checked before it. Fireworks on July 4 send a lot of Yorkies under the bed; the crate is built as a refuge early.

  • Dawn and dusk sessions from May through September, pavement tested first
  • Short trim before a summer stay
  • Supervised yard time on acreage and in the outer suburbs
  • Elevator, window and doorbell plans by housing type

Program and price

Gold at $2,500 for most Yorkies, Platinum at $3,750 for the biter or the lunger.

The two-week Gold Board & Train is $2,500 and it is the right program for most Yorkies: sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash walking, door boundaries, the quiet cue and impulse control, with a go-home session, one additional lesson and lifelong support. Book the three-week Platinum at $3,750 if your Yorkie has bitten, snaps when handled or lunges at every dog on every walk; those need the behavior modification and field trips Platinum includes.

House training on its own is an in-home lesson at $220. A Yorkie puppy under four months is a Puppy Development Bundle case, $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, and it is the cheapest time to prevent the barking and the snapping. Transport is $250 for pickup and return across the Houston area, with the first lesson at your house included.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How much does Yorkshire terrier training cost in Houston?

At Best Dog University a Yorkie's two-week Gold Board & Train is $2,500 and the three-week Platinum is $3,750. Gold fits barking, bossiness and pulling; Platinum is for biting and leash lunging. Private lessons are $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home, and the puppy bundle for a Yorkie under four months is $550 or $750.

Do you use the same methods on a Yorkie as on a big dog?

The same principles, sized for the dog. Balanced training means rewards for what we want and fair, consistent boundaries for what we do not, and the boundary for a seven-pound terrier is a leash pressure and a tone of voice, not force. It responds to structure the way any terrier does.

Will my Yorkie stop barking at everything?

It will stop barking at most things and give one or two barks at the rest, which is a fair standard for a terrier. The quiet cue is taught early, the window and the doorbell are practiced daily, and the dog learns that place is where the noise ends. Your family keeps it there by using the cue the same way we do.

My Yorkie lunges at big dogs on leash. Is that aggression?

Usually it is fear and frustration on a tight leash, rewarded by being picked up. Our trainers work it at a distance the Yorkie can tolerate and close the gap a little each day, on quiet streets first and then busier trails. A Yorkie that has bitten another dog or a person is a Platinum case; most lungers are Gold.

Can a Yorkie be house trained if it is already two?

Yes. A crate sized for sleeping, fixed meal times, the same patch of grass after every nap and meal, and no puppy pads is the routine, and it works at any age when everyone follows it. We set it up in an in-home lesson at $220 and tell you honestly how many weeks a clean record usually takes.
