Training in the heat
Summer board and train in Houston: how a stay runs in the heat
The question behind a summer booking is whether the dog will be trained or just kept cool. The answer is that Houston summer is when structure matters most, because a dog who cannot be walked at noon has to be calm indoors for ten hours. A summer stay teaches exactly that, and it teaches the walk in the hours when a walk is safe.

Who books in summer
Summer board and train fits families who travel, school-year households and heat-sensitive dogs.
The family with a vacation. A two-week trip in June or July is the most common reason a Houston dog arrives in summer. Instead of a boarding facility, the dog spends the fortnight in our home being trained, and comes back as the family does. Gold fits that window exactly, and the go-home session lands on the first weekend everyone is home.
The household with kids out of school. When the children are home all day the dog's habits become everyone's problem: jumping, stealing, barking through pool parties. Parents often book a stay for the stretch when the kids are at camp or with grandparents, so the dog comes home to a calmer house with rules in place before the chaos resumes.
The dog who struggles in the heat. Thick-coated breeds, flat-faced dogs and seniors have their outdoor time cut to almost nothing by July, and a dog with no indoor off switch becomes destructive by August. A summer stay is where that off switch is built, and the summer schedule is what we hand back at the go-home session.
- Vacation weeks in June, July and August
- Kids home from school and a dog who cannot cope
- Huskies, Bernese, Frenchies and seniors with almost no safe outdoor hours
- Any dog who needs to learn calm indoors for the long afternoons

A summer day, hour by hour
The day is split around the heat: early, indoors, late.
Drop-off in summer happens early or in the evening, at the Cypress home or by $250 transport, because loading a dog into a hot car at 2pm is a bad first lesson. The first day is crate, water, a short shaded walk and a meal for a sit. From then on the day has three parts, and the rhythm is the same whether the dog is in Gold or Platinum.
Before 8am is leash work and obedience outdoors, on grass where possible, with the pavement hand-tested before any dog steps on it. Between 8am and 7pm the training moves indoors: place with duration, door boundaries, impulse control, crate rest and, for Platinum dogs, field trips into air-conditioned stores along 290. After 7pm the second outdoor block runs the walk and the recall work at the lake path.
6am to 8am: structured walk on the neighborhood streets and the morning obedience block, before the concrete warms.
8am to 10am: breakfast for a sit, then place with duration while the house runs around the dog; water at every station.
10am to 1pm: indoor obedience and door boundaries in the hallway and at the front door; a Platinum field trip to a store aisle on trip days.
1pm to 4pm: crate rest in the air conditioning, the hours no Houston dog should be working outside in July.
4pm to 7pm: impulse control drills indoors, handling work, and the Monday, Wednesday and Friday video is filmed and sent.
7pm to 9pm: the evening walk, lake-path recall on a long line for Platinum and VIP dogs, and the last potty trip before the house settles.
Price and inclusions
Summer pricing is the standard pricing: $2,500 for Gold, $3,750 for Platinum.
There is no summer surcharge and no summer discount. Gold at $2,500 covers two weeks of sit/stay, place/stay, loose leash, door boundaries, jumping, pulling and impulse control, a go-home session, one additional lesson and lifelong support. Platinum at $3,750 covers three weeks and adds down/stay, structured heel, behavior modification, field trips, a comprehensive handover and unlimited private lessons. VIP at $10,000 runs its off-leash work at first light and after dark.
The $250 reservation deposit. Summer dates are the most requested on the calendar, because vacations cluster and the training home keeps a limited number of dogs. Once the free consultation sets the program, a $250 deposit through Reserve Your Spot holds the dates and is applied to the total. Families with a fixed trip should reserve as soon as the flights are booked.
- Same $2,500 and $3,750, no seasonal change
- $250 transport, timed for the cool hours
- $250 deposit, credited to the program
- The most requested dates of the year; reserve early

Houston specifics
Pavement, water, mosquitoes and storms are the four things a summer stay is planned around.
The pavement test decides the schedule: if a hand cannot rest on the sidewalk for seven seconds, no dog walks on it. In Cypress that rules out most of 9am to 8pm from June through August. Water is at every training station, and any dog showing heavy panting or a slowed pace is moved inside immediately; the AVMA's heat guidance for pets and the National Weather Service heat advisories for Houston are the two references our trainers watch.
Mosquitoes are worst in summer, so heartworm prevention must be current at drop-off, and the evening sessions at the lake are timed to avoid the worst of them. Hurricane season overlaps the entire summer: from June 1 the training home has a storm plan for every dog, with crates, records and food ready to move, and a stay is never cancelled for a forecast, only adjusted. Alligators are more active in warm water, so lake work stays on the path and the long line.
- Ten-second hand test on every sidewalk before every walk
- Water and shade at every station, sessions cut short at the first sign of heat stress
- Heartworm prevention current at drop-off; evening lake sessions timed around mosquitoes
- A storm plan in place from June 1, adjusted rather than cancelled for a forecast

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is it safe to do board and train in the Houston summer?
Yes, when the schedule respects the heat, which ours does. Outdoor sessions run before 8am and after 7pm, the pavement is hand-tested, water is always available, and the middle of the day is indoor training and crate rest in air conditioning. The training is rearranged around the heat rather than reduced by it.
Does my dog get less training in summer?
No. The outdoor blocks are shorter and earlier, but the indoor blocks are longer, and indoor structure is what most Houston dogs need anyway. Place, door boundaries, impulse control and crate calm are all taught indoors. Platinum field trips move into stores at midday and onto lake paths and sidewalks at dawn and dusk.
Can the stay line up with our summer vacation?
That is the most common summer booking. A two-week Gold fits a two-week trip, with drop-off the day before you fly and the go-home session the weekend you return. Because summer dates fill first, book the stay as soon as the trip is fixed and pay the $250 deposit to hold it.
What if a hurricane threatens during the stay?
The training home has a storm plan for every dog from June 1 to November 30: crates, records and food are ready to move, and our team stays in touch with you as a forecast develops. Stays are adjusted, not abandoned. If you are evacuating yourself, we coordinate the timing of the dog's return with you directly.
How much does summer board and train cost in Houston?
The same as any season: $2,500 for the two-week Gold, $3,750 for the three-week Platinum and $10,000 for the six-week VIP. Transport is $250 and includes the first lesson at home. A $250 reservation deposit holds the dates and is applied to the total, and summer dates should be reserved early.
