Can i do a board and train in summer?
Houston summer is not a reason to postpone training; it is a reason to be picky about where the training happens. Here is how a stay runs from May to September, what changes for flat-faced and heavy-coated dogs, and how the storm calendar fits in.

The short version
The schedule bends around the heat, and the house does the rest.
A summer day at the training home starts before six. First walks and the first outdoor sessions happen while the sidewalks are still cool, then the dogs rest in the air conditioning through the middle of the day and train indoors: place with duration, door manners, crate work, the marker and release. Late afternoon is store time, because a pet or hardware aisle on 290 is cool and full of distractions. The second outdoor block comes after seven, when the pavement passes the hand test.
None of that is a compromise. Indoor and store work is most of what a dog needs in the first two weeks anyway, and the field trips that make week three of Platinum valuable happen in air-conditioned places or in the cool hours. What summer removes is the long midday walk, which no dog in Houston should be doing in July regardless.
- Outdoor sessions before 8 a.m. and after 7 p.m. from May to September
- Seven-second hand test on the pavement before every walk
- Midday training indoors and in air-conditioned store aisles
- Air-conditioned house, water always down, rest between sessions
The reasoning
Heat is a medical risk before it is a training problem, so it is managed like one.
Dogs cool by panting, and Houston humidity makes panting less effective, so a dog can overheat on a shaded walk at ninety degrees. Our trainers watch the early signs, heavy panting, a wide tongue, slowing down, seeking shade, and stop before them rather than after. Pavement is the second hazard: asphalt in the afternoon sun burns pads in minutes, and the back-of-the-hand test is done before every leash goes on.
The dogs who need the most care are the ones people worry about least. Flat-faced breeds, French bulldogs and English bulldogs among them, overheat fastest and get the shortest outdoor blocks. Heavy-coated northern breeds and big black dogs absorb heat quickly. Puppies and seniors have less margin. Every one of them can do a summer stay; the schedule is simply built tighter around them.
- Early signs of heat stress stop a session, not late ones
- Flat-faced, heavy-coated, dark-coated, young and old dogs get shorter outdoor blocks
- Water before, during and after every outdoor session
For your dog
Puppies, adults and flat-faced dogs each get a summer version of the program.
A puppy starting a stay at four to five months in June gets the shortest outdoor windows and the most indoor structure, which suits the age. A healthy adult Lab or shepherd from Towne Lake handles the cool-hour schedule easily and spends the hot hours on impulse control and place, which is where most adults need the work anyway. Adults also do their field trips in stores rather than on trails until October.
Flat-faced dogs are the honest exception. A Frenchie in a Houston August can do a Gold stay at $2,500 or a Platinum stay at $3,750, but the walking component is short, early and watched closely, and if your goal is long trail walks, fall is the better season to book. Our team says so on the phone consultation rather than taking the booking and hoping.
Houston reality
Hurricane season, July 4 and mosquitoes all land inside a summer stay.
Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and every dog in the house has records and an evacuation contact on file from drop-off. If a storm turns toward Harris County, we call families before anyone is moved, and a dog whose family is 25 to 35 minutes away in Katy or 35 to 45 in The Woodlands can usually be collected the same day. Rain is the smaller issue: flooded streets and standing water mean walks shift to the neighborhood's higher sidewalks and the store aisles.
July 4 falls inside many summer stays, and it is treated as an exposure exercise done gently: crate in the quietest room, television on, food for calm, no forcing a dog outside to see the show. Mosquitoes are worst in summer, so heartworm prevention must be current, and we ask for the date of the next dose. Fire ants are active in every yard and park, and dogs are kept off mounds on every walk.
Confirm heartworm, flea and tick prevention are current and send the next dose if it falls in the stay.
Tell our team about any breathing issues, past heat episodes or a heavy coat.
Leave an evacuation contact and a copy of the records with the dog.
Watch the Monday, Wednesday and Friday updates for the cool-hour walks and store trips.
At the go-home session, take the summer schedule home with the dog and keep it until October.

The programs
Gold and Platinum run all summer; the schedule changes, the curriculum does not.
Gold is two weeks at $2,500 for manners and obedience. Platinum is three weeks at $3,750 with behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons, and its public exposure happens in air-conditioned stores and in the cool hours. Transport at $250 spares you a midday drive on 290 and includes the first lesson in your home. Families often line a summer stay up with a trip, so the $250 deposit is best paid early.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Is it too hot to train a dog outside in Houston in July?
At midday, yes, for any dog. Before eight in the morning and after seven in the evening, most dogs can do a structured walk safely if the pavement passes the hand test and water is available. That is how our summer stays are scheduled, with the middle of the day spent training indoors and in air-conditioned store aisles.
Does my dog get less training in summer?
No. He gets a different mix: more indoor obedience, place and impulse control, more store field trips and shorter outdoor blocks. The skills taught are the same as in a fall stay. What he does not get is a long midday walk, which he should not be getting from you in July either.
What if a hurricane hits during my dog's stay?
Every dog has records and an evacuation contact on file from drop-off. If a storm threatens Harris County, our team calls families before moving anyone, and most can collect their dog the same day given the drive times. If not, the dog evacuates with our trainer and his records. Check Ready Harris for the current county guidance each season.
Should I wait until fall to book instead?
Only if your main goal is long trail walks with a flat-faced or heavy-coated dog. For obedience, manners, reactivity and anxiety, summer works as well as any season because the core of the work happens indoors. Fall dates fill early, so a summer stay often means an earlier start and a dog who is ready for the cool-weather trails.
