Submissive urination
Submissive and excitement urination training in Houston
You walk in after a long day in the Energy Corridor, the puppy wriggles over, and there is a puddle on the tile before you have set your bag down. Nobody trained this in and nobody can scold it out, and most dogs outgrow it quickly once the greetings change.

What it is
A leak at the greeting or the scolding, not a decision to go.
Submissive urination happens when a dog is approached, leaned over, reached for or spoken to sharply, and it leaks a little while crouching, rolling, tucking its tail or flattening its ears. Excitement urination happens during the happiest moments: the family coming home, a guest at the door, the leash coming out, and the dog dribbles while it wriggles. Both are involuntary, both are most common in puppies and young dogs, and both are worse in soft, sensitive dogs and in rescues.
What it is not is a potty-training failure, defiance or a dog marking its territory. A dog that pees a full bladder on the rug while you are out has a housebreaking gap. A dog that squats and leaves a small puddle at your feet as you say hello has a confidence gap. And a dog that suddenly starts leaking at eight years old needs a veterinarian first, because that is a different question.
- A small puddle during a greeting or a scolding
- Crouching, rolling, tail tucked, ears flat
- Involuntary, and worst in soft young dogs
- Not housebreaking, not marking, not defiance
Why it happens here
Long commutes, tall greeters and a rescue that learned to appease.
The Houston commute sets it up: the dog is alone for nine or ten hours, and the homecoming is the biggest event of its day, so the greeting arrives with a full bladder and more excitement than the dog can hold. Then the greeting itself: a tall person bending over a small dog, hands reaching for its head, a big voice, and every signal a puppy reads as pressure. Kids running in from school do the same thing, louder.
Rescues from BARC, Harris County Pets and the local groups carry the other version: a dog that learned to appease people by rolling and leaking, because that is what worked in the last place. Spring litters arrive in Houston homes in May and June, right as the heat drives everyone indoors, and a puppy raised on tile with a lot of loud family attention rehearses the wriggle every evening.

How we fix it
Change the greeting, build confidence, and never react to the puddle.
The greeting changes first. Nobody speaks to the dog at the door; the family walks in, puts things down and ignores the dog for a few minutes, then crouches sideways, without eye contact, and lets the dog come. Better still, the first thing that happens is a trip outside so the bladder is empty before any hello. The puddle, when it happens, is cleaned in silence, because any reaction, even a sigh, confirms the dog's worry and makes the next greeting worse.
Confidence is built with structure and small wins: a place command the dog can succeed at, a sit for its meals, a leash walk it leads with its nose rather than its worry, and handling that is paid rather than imposed. Guests get the same instructions at the door. In the Puppy Development Bundle the greeting protocol and the confidence work are built into the four sessions alongside potty guidance, so the family is not guessing which puddle is which.
Outside first, before any hello

Which program
The puppy bundle first, lessons for the rescue, Gold when the dog needs structure everywhere.
A puppy under four months fits the Puppy Development Bundle: four private sessions of 45 to 60 minutes for $550 at our Cypress training home or $750 in your home, covering the greeting protocol, potty guidance, crate calm, sit, place, recall and socialization in one plan. That is the right answer for most families on this page, because the leaking and the housebreaking are being sorted at the same time.
An older puppy or a nervous rescue fits private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 in your home, where our trainer coaches the greeting in your entryway with your family. An adolescent that leaks at the door and also jumps, pulls and cannot settle fits the two-week Gold Board & Train at $2,500 for place, impulse control and structure. Board and train is not needed for the leaking alone; it is the household greeting that has to change.
| Dog | Program | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy under 4 months | Puppy Development Bundle | $550 Cypress, $750 in-home |
| Older puppy or nervous rescue | Private lessons | $160 Cypress, $220 in-home |
| Adolescent with no structure at all | Gold, 2 weeks | $2,500 |
Houston specifics
Tile floors, the garage door and a puppy's summer indoors.
Most Houston homes have tile or vinyl plank through the entry and kitchen, which makes the cleanup easy and the sound of a wriggling puppy skidding across it part of the greeting; a runner rug at the door gives the dog footing and takes some of the excitement out. The garage door is the trigger in most suburban homes, not the front door, so the outside-first rule means straight through the house to the yard.
A summer puppy in Cypress spends its first months mostly indoors because the pavement is too hot to walk on, so the greeting rehearsal happens ten times a day; the bundle sessions can be at our training home or in yours. Families in Katy or The Woodlands are about 25 to 45 minutes from Cypress outside rush hour, and the in-home version at $750 puts our trainer at your door for the real thing.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Do puppies grow out of submissive urination?
Most do, usually by the end of the first year, provided the greetings stop putting pressure on them and nobody punishes the puddle. A puppy that is still leaking at a year, or a dog that gets worse, has usually been scolded for it, and the greeting protocol on this page still fixes most of them.
Should I punish my dog for peeing when I come home?
No, and it is the one thing that reliably makes it worse. The dog is not choosing to go; it is appeasing you, and a scolding tells it that it was right to worry. Clean up in silence, change the greeting, and take the dog outside before anyone says hello.
Is excitement peeing the same as submissive peeing?
Close cousins. Excitement peeing happens during happy moments and the dog is upright and wriggling; submissive peeing happens under pressure and the dog crouches or rolls. The fix overlaps: an empty bladder before greetings, calm low-key hellos and a dog with more confidence. The excitement version usually fades faster.
Could it be a medical problem?
It can be, and a dog that starts leaking as an adult, leaks while asleep, or drinks and pees far more than usual needs a veterinarian before a trainer. Our team will ask on the consultation call, and a quick check rules it out so the training is aimed at the right thing.
My rescue pees when my husband walks in but not me. Why?
Because he is taller, has a deeper voice, or arrives with more energy, and the dog reads pressure in all three. He becomes the quiet one at the door: in, things down, no eye contact, then a sideways crouch. Within a few weeks the dog stops bracing for him.
