Bedtime routine

How to teach a dog to settle at night: a bedtime routine that holds

An adult dog that paces, whines or wanders the house at 2am is rarely being difficult on purpose. Usually the evening gave it too much excitement or too little structure, or the night has taught it that getting up pays. This guide is for grown dogs; puppies have their own plan.

Before you start

Before you start: rule out the medical, then pick the spot and the time.

A dog that suddenly starts waking at night after years of sleeping through should see your vet first. Pain, a urinary problem and the changes of old age can all show up as restless nights, and no routine fixes those. For a dog that has simply never had a bedtime, choose where it sleeps, since a crate or a bed in your bedroom suits most dogs, and choose the time the lights go out. You will also want a long-lasting chew and a leash by the back door.

The Houston caveat is the evening itself. From May to September the only safe walk is often the one after sunset, and a dog walked at 8:30pm comes home wired rather than tired unless the walk is structured and followed by quiet. Storm season adds thunder after dark, and July 4 and New Year's Eve bring fireworks that can undo a week of calm. Plan those nights ahead: close the blinds, run a fan or white noise, and cover the crate.

  • A vet check for any new night waking
  • One sleeping spot, one lights-out time
  • A structured walk, then quiet
  • A plan for storms and fireworks nights

The steps

The evening routine, in the order it happens.

Run the same sequence every night for two weeks before you judge it, weekends included. Dogs read the pattern more than the clock, so the order matters more than the minutes, and each step becomes the signal for the next. The whole household has to agree on it, because one person who gets up to play at midnight will keep the waking alive for everyone.

1

Walk after the heat breaks, mostly on a loose leash with a few minutes of sniffing at the end, then head home

2

Serve dinner at least a couple of hours before bed, and lift the water bowl about an hour before lights out unless your vet advises otherwise

3

Spend the next hour with the dog on its bed or place near you with a long-lasting chew, quietly paying it for lying down

4

Take a last potty trip on leash to the usual spot, with no play and no talk beyond the potty cue

5

Walk to the crate or bed, give the bedtime cue and a small treat, dim the lights and settle yourself

6

If the dog gets up, return it to the bed calmly with as few words as possible, as often as it takes, and pay it once it lies back down

When it is not working

Too much evening energy, answered whining, and a dog that sleeps all afternoon.

A dog that is wild at 10pm usually had a big, exciting evening: fetch at dusk, a wrestling session with the kids, a visitor at the door. Move the play earlier and end the evening with calm, the bed and a chew. The dog that whines at the crate door has probably been let out for whining before, even once. Answer only a sharp, sudden cry that could be a potty need, on leash and straight back, and let ordinary whining run its course.

The third reason is a day without a shape. A dog alone and asleep for eight hours while the family works has slept its fill by evening, and the night becomes its time. A walk before work, a midday break, a puzzle feeder and a structured hour of place in the evening all move sleep back to the night. Our answer on why dogs bark at night covers the noisier version of the same problem.

  • Big evening play: move it earlier
  • Whining: answer only a sudden potty cry
  • Sleeping all day: add a midday break
  • The same order every single night

When to get help

When a restless night is a training job, and which program fits.

Night restlessness usually travels with daytime problems: a dog with no off switch, one that cannot stay on a bed, or one that follows you from room to room. The Gold Board & Train, two weeks at $2,500, builds place and stay with real duration and impulse control, and the dog lives in our trainer's home in Cypress, where evenings follow a routine. The Silver Foundation Program, one week at $1,500, is a starting point in structure for a dog that needs less.

A dog that panics when you leave the room, paces all night or destroys things in the dark may be anxious rather than untrained, and that is a behavior case our team would want to hear about. Private lessons at $160 in Cypress or $220 at home can set up the evening routine with you in your own house. The free phone consultation is the place to start that conversation.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Should my dog sleep in my bedroom?

For most dogs it helps. A crate or bed in your room means the dog can hear and smell you and settles faster, and you will hear a genuine potty need. Sharing the bed itself is a family choice, but for a dog that guards the bed or will not settle, its own bed on the floor is the better rule.

How long does it take a dog to learn a bedtime routine?

Most adult dogs settle within one to two weeks if the routine is the same every night and nobody answers the whining. Rescues in their first month and dogs just through a move can take longer, because the whole house is still new to them.

Why does my dog pace at night?

Common reasons are too much energy late in the evening, a need to go out, discomfort, or worry. A new habit in an older dog belongs with your vet first. For a younger healthy dog, a structured walk after dark, an hour of place and a set lights-out usually help within days.

What do I do on fireworks nights?

Plan the evening: walk and potty before dark, close the blinds, turn on a fan or music and cover the crate. Stay calm and nearby. July 4 and New Year's Eve in Houston can stay loud for hours, and a dog with a set routine copes better; a dog that panics needs its own plan.
