Why does my dog

Why does my dog bark at night?

Night barking is the call that comes with a neighbor's note attached, usually from a master-planned section where the association counts complaints, and the first question our trainers ask is where the dog sleeps and what it can see from there.

The short version

Access, payoff or anxiety, and the bedroom setup decides most of it.

A dog that sleeps by a window or a glass door, or that has a dog door to the yard, has a view of the night and announces everything in it. A dog that barks and gets a person, even a person shouting, has learned that barking at 2am summons company. A dog that barks with whining and pacing in a dog that is otherwise quiet is anxious about the dark or about being alone. Breed plays a part: terriers, schnauzers, shepherds and the guardian breeds are built to alert, and a Great Pyrenees is doing its job at 3am. Most of it ends with a covered crate in an interior room, white noise, the yard closed after bedtime and a family that does not come when called.

  • A window, a glass door or a dog door: access
  • A person arrives when it barks: payoff
  • Whining and pacing too: anxiety
  • Terriers, schnauzers, shepherds and guardians: bred to alert
  • A covered crate, an interior room and white noise end most of it

The reasoning

Why the yard is loud, why shouting pays, and why the quiet cue is taught by day.

A Houston yard after dark is busy: coyotes move along the greenbelts and retention ponds, raccoons and possums work the fences, cats cross, a neighbor's dog answers, and the air conditioning units and sprinklers cycle on. A dog with access hears all of it and barks at most of it, and a dog with a dog door goes out to do it in person. Shouting from the bedroom is attention, and attention is pay, so the dog learns that barking produces a voice. The quiet cue, a word that means stop barking and is paid with a treat for silence, cannot be taught at 2am; it is taught by day, at the window, with real triggers, until it works, and only then used at night.

Exercise and a job matter too. A dog that has had a structured walk and something to think about in the evening sleeps; a dog that has had neither is awake and looking for work.

  • Coyotes, raccoons, cats, neighbor dogs and sprinklers
  • Shouting is attention, and attention is pay
  • The quiet cue is taught by day, used at night
  • A walk and a job in the evening produce sleep

What it means for your dog

Puppies, adolescents, alert breeds and the anxious dog.

A puppy that cries at night is not barking at the yard; it is alone for the first time, and the crate in the bedroom for the first weeks, with a trip out when it is a real need, solves it. An adolescent that has discovered the night is a dog to crate in an interior room with the yard closed, and it stops within a week when the barking produces nothing. An alert breed is managed for life: no window, no dog door, a crate, white noise and a job, because the alerting does not vanish. An anxious dog that whines and paces needs the separation or noise plan, a den and often a veterinary conversation, and the barking is the least of it.

  • Puppies: the crate in the bedroom, a trip out for a real need
  • Adolescents: an interior room, the yard closed, a week
  • Alert breeds: managed for life
  • Anxious dogs: the den, the plan and the vet

The Houston factor

Greenbelts full of wildlife, HOAs that count complaints, and summer nights that never cool.

The master-planned sections around Cypress, Katy and The Woodlands back onto greenbelts and retention ponds that coyotes, raccoons and possums use as highways, so a dog with a yard view has a show every night, and the associations in those sections have nuisance clauses that run on neighbor complaints. Summer nights stay in the 80s and families leave dogs out later or install dog doors for the heat, which is exactly the access that creates the barker. The plan is the same everywhere: the dog sleeps in the air conditioning, in a covered crate in an interior room, with the yard closed from bedtime to morning.

The program

Gold for the crate, the quiet cue and the routine; Platinum for the anxious dog.

Night barking from access or payoff is a Gold case, two weeks at $2,500, where crate calm, the quiet cue and the evening routine are built in the training home and set up in your house at the go-home session. A dog that barks at night out of anxiety is a Platinum case, three weeks at $3,750, with the den and the plan and unlimited lessons afterwards. The excessive barking page describes the method and the HOA rules page explains what the association can and cannot do. Our team asks where the dog sleeps on the free phone consultation, and the answer usually fixes half of it.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Should I ignore my dog barking at night?

If the dog is safe, crated and has been out, yes, completely: no voice, no light, no visit, because any of them is pay. If the barking is new, frantic or comes with whining and pacing, check the dog, because a real need or anxiety is different. A camera tells you which.

Why does my dog bark at 3am in Houston?

Because the yard is busy at 3am: coyotes on the greenbelt, raccoons on the fence, a cat, a neighbor's dog, the sprinklers. A dog with a window, a glass door or a dog door has a view of all of it. Close the access and move the dog to an interior room.

Will a bark collar stop night barking?

It may suppress it and it teaches nothing, and on an anxious dog it makes things worse. Closing the access, a covered crate in an interior room, white noise, a quiet cue taught by day and no payoff stop night barking in most dogs within a week or two.

My puppy cries all night. Is that barking?

No, it is a puppy alone for the first time. Put the crate in your bedroom for the first weeks, take the puppy out when the crying means a real need, and put it straight back. It settles within a week or two, and the crate moves later.
