How to teach a dog to be quiet on cue

The quiet cue is the single most requested skill in a master-planned community, usually arriving with a letter from the association, and it is also the most misunderstood, because families try to teach it at midnight during the barking. Here is how our trainers build it by day, and the management it needs.

Why it fails

Shouting is barking, and the cue was taught during the crisis.

Most families already have a quiet cue, and it is the word no shouted from the couch, which to the dog sounds like the family joining in. A real quiet cue is a word that predicts a reward for silence, and it can only be taught when the dog can hear it, which means by day, at a trigger the family controls, with the dog on a leash near the window and a pocket of food. The second reason it fails is rehearsal: a dog that barks at the window for six hours while the family is at work has six hours of practice against the family's five minutes of training, and no cue survives that ratio. The management, no free access to the window during delivery hours and a place bed in its stead, is half the method.

  • A shouted no sounds like joining in
  • The cue is taught by day, at a controlled trigger
  • Six hours of rehearsal beats five minutes of training
  • Management is half the method

The method

Six steps from the first second of silence to quiet on a word.

You need a trigger you can produce, a helper walking past the window or a doorbell recording, a leash on the dog, and food the dog values. Work at a time of day the dog is otherwise calm.

1

Let the dog see the trigger and bark two or three times, then say quiet once in a normal voice and wait

2

The instant the dog pauses, even to breathe, mark and pay; repeat until the dog pauses on the word

3

Grow the silence before the pay: two seconds, five, ten, thirty, a minute, paying on the bed where possible so quiet and place start to merge

4

Fade the trigger into real life: quiet when a real delivery comes, paid; quiet when a neighbor walks past, paid

5

Add the management: no free access to the window during the busy hours, a place bed with a chew instead, and white noise during the hours alone

6

Thin the pay to every second or third quiet, keep the word calm, and use it for a month before you trust it

The mistakes

The shouted cue, the cue without management, paying the bark, and the collar shortcut.

The shouted cue fails because it is barking. The cue without management fails because the rehearsal wins; a dog that spends its days at the window learns window barking faster than it learns quiet. Paying the bark is the subtle one: a dog that barks, is told quiet and is immediately paid learns to bark in order to be told quiet, which is why the silence has to grow before the pay arrives. And the bark collar, spray or static, suppresses the bark without teaching anything and, on an anxious dog, makes the anxiety worse; it is not a substitute for the cue and the management. A dog that barks once at a real event and stops on the word is the goal; a silent dog is not, and alert breeds will always alert once.

One word for the whole household, used in the same calm voice, and never when the dog cannot hear it.

  • Never shout the cue
  • Always pair it with management
  • Grow the silence before the pay
  • No bark collar as a shortcut
  • One alert and stop is the goal, not silence

Proofing around Houston

Delivery drivers all day, the HOA letter, and the window with a view of the street.

Houston's master-planned sections give a dog a delivery every hour, a lawn crew weekly and a street full of walkers, and the associations in Bridgeland, Cinco Ranch and The Woodlands count the complaints; the HOA rules guide on this site covers what the letter means. The window is the rehearsal machine and closing it off during the busy hours is the first move, with the place bed and a chew in an interior room as the alternative. Our trainers teach the quiet cue in the training home with real deliveries and proof it on field trips where dogs bark at the dog in the next aisle, and the go-home session sets up the window management in your own front room.

  • A delivery every hour as the trigger
  • The HOA letter as the reason
  • The window closed off during busy hours
  • A place bed and a chew in an interior room

When to call

Fear barking, separation barking and the dog that barks for hours at nothing.

A dog that barks at strangers out of fear, stiff and backing up, needs the fear worked at a distance before the cue will hold, on the fearful dog pages. A dog that barks for the whole absence while the family is at work is a separation case, and a camera tells you; the quiet cue does nothing for a dog that cannot hear it. A dog that barks for hours at nothing visible is often bored and under-exercised, and the calm-in-the-house page is the fix. For ordinary alert and demand barking, a Gold stay at $2,500 builds the quiet cue, place and the window management into the foundation, and an in-home lesson at $220 sets up the window and the cue in an afternoon. The excessive barking page describes the program.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How do I teach my dog the quiet command?

Let the dog bark at a trigger you control, say quiet once, mark and pay the first second of silence, and grow the silence before the pay from a second to a minute over days. Teach it by day, never during the midnight barking, and pair it with no free access to the window during the busy hours.

Why does my dog bark more when I tell it to be quiet?

Because a shouted no sounds like you joining in, or because the dog has learned that barking produces the word and the word produces a treat. Say it once in a calm voice, and make the silence grow before the pay arrives so the dog is paid for being quiet, not for barking first.

Do bark collars work?

They suppress barking in some dogs and teach nothing, and on an anxious dog they make the anxiety worse. The quiet cue paired with management, the window closed off, a place bed, white noise when alone, stops ordinary barking within a week or two without one.

My HOA sent a letter about barking. What do I do first?

Close off the window during delivery hours today, give the dog a place bed and a chew in an interior room, and add white noise during the hours alone; that stops most of the rehearsal at once. Then teach the quiet cue by day. A written plan often satisfies the association while it takes effect.
