A habit worth breaking

How to stop a dog from eating poop: management first, then training

It is one of the most common and least discussed calls our team gets, often from a family in Bridgeland or Towne Lake with a lovely puppy and a very unpleasant habit. It is fixable, and the fix is mostly logistics.

Before you start

Before you start: a vet check, a scoop by the back door and a leash on the hook.

Book a vet visit first, especially if the habit is new, the dog is an adult, or it seems hungry all the time. Diet and some medical problems can play a part, and there is no point training around a cause the vet could find. Then set up the logistics: a scoop and bags by the back door, a leash on a hook beside it, a pouch of high-value treats, and a gate or a door that keeps the dog away from the cat's litter box.

The Houston caveat is that the yard works against you in summer. Waste dries fast in the heat, flies gather, and a dog left out alone in the evening has plenty of time to hunt. Clean up every time, not once a day. On walks, the ponds and lakes in master-planned neighborhoods bring goose droppings onto the paths, and busy trails carry other dogs' waste, so the leave-it has to work away from home as well.

  • A vet check first
  • A scoop and bags at the back door
  • The litter box behind a gate
  • Goose droppings on the pond paths

The steps

Seven steps: clean yard, leashed trips, a call-away and a leave-it.

The plan works because it removes the payoff and replaces it with a better one. The dog learns that the moment it finishes, the best thing in the yard is you at the back door. Run it for three to four weeks without gaps, and be ready for the dog to test the old habit when you relax. The yard stays clean for good, because a clean yard costs almost nothing and removes the temptation entirely.

1

Take the dog out on a leash for every potty trip, even in a fenced yard, for the first three to four weeks

2

The moment the dog finishes, say a cheerful 'this way' and walk briskly toward the back door with it, paying a jackpot of three or four treats at the door

3

Clean up immediately after, while the dog is inside or in its crate, so there is never anything to find later

4

Teach leave-it indoors with food under your shoe, paid from your other hand for the look away, then move to food in a bag on the ground outside

5

Use the leave-it on walks for other dogs' waste and goose droppings, paying heavily, and walk the dog on a short leash past the worst spots

6

Keep the litter box behind a gate or in a room with a cat door the dog cannot use

7

After four clean weeks, drop the leash in the fenced yard while you still watch and call the dog away the moment it finishes

Troubleshooting

When it is not working: the yard is not clean, the reward is late, or the chase became a game.

If the habit continues, check the three usual leaks. The yard is not clean every time, so the dog still finds a snack now and then, which is enough to keep trying. The reward at the door is late or ordinary, so it loses to the find; use real meat or cheese and deliver it within a second of the dog arriving. Or the dog has learned that grabbing poop starts a thrilling chase with you, and now it does it for the game.

That third reason is worth taking seriously. Shouting and running at the dog makes the moment more exciting and can teach it to swallow faster before you arrive. Stay calm, keep the leash on so you never need to chase, and make the walk away from the spot the fun part. A dog that grabs and swallows anything on walks before you can react should wear a basket muzzle on walks while the leave-it is built.

  • Clean every time, not once a day
  • Pay at the door within a second
  • Never chase; the leash prevents it
  • A basket muzzle for a fast swallower

When to get help

When to get help: a puppy you want started right, or an adult who will not stop.

For a puppy under four months, the Puppy Development Bundle, four private sessions at $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, covers potty routines, leave-it and the leash habits that keep this from becoming a lifelong problem. For an adult with a stubborn habit, an in-home private lesson at $220 lets our trainer see the yard and the routine and fix the timing on the spot. A dog that guards its finds or growls when you approach it needs the two-week Gold program at $2,500 or more, and a call to our team first.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Why does my dog eat poop?

Dogs eat poop for several reasons: puppies explore with their mouths, some dogs are hungry or bored, some learned it from a mother dog, and some find it simply tastes good. Diet and medical issues can play a part, which is why a vet check comes first. The method on this page works whatever started it.

Do puppies grow out of eating poop on their own?

Some puppies do, especially when the yard is kept clean while they grow up. Others turn it into an adult habit. The safe plan is to manage it from the start, clean yard, leashed trips and a call-away, so the habit never gets the practice it needs to stick.

Do food additives stop dogs eating poop?

Some owners report that products added to food help, and others see no change. Ask your veterinarian before adding anything. Whatever you try, the management and training on this page still do most of the work, because they remove the chance and replace it with a better reward.

My dog eats the cat's litter box waste. What do I do?

Put the litter box where the dog cannot reach it: behind a baby gate with a small cat door, in a room with a door propped at cat width, or on a raised surface the cat can use. Management here is simple and complete, and it works better than training alone.

Should I punish my dog for eating poop?

No. Punishment tends to make dogs sneakier and faster, and some start swallowing before you can reach them. Make the find impossible with a clean yard and a leash, and make coming to you the best thing that happens after the dog goes. Calm handling keeps the habit from turning into a game.
