Mosquito season and training outdoors in Houston
A dog can do a full obedience session at a pet store at noon in August without meeting a single mosquito. That is not a coincidence; it is why our field-trip route looks the way it does from May to October.

The season
Nine months of mosquitoes, the worst after rain, and heartworm pressure that never stops.
Houston sits on a coastal plain with bayous, ditches, retention ponds and a rainfall pattern that leaves standing water everywhere for days after a storm, and the mosquitoes follow within a week. The heavy months run May through October, with spikes after the spring storms and again after the fall rains, but a warm January produces mosquitoes too. Harris County runs a mosquito control program and posts the surveillance results, and the American Heartworm Society's incidence maps put the Gulf Coast in the highest-risk band in the country.
Heartworm is the disease that matters for a dog: transmitted by the bite, expensive and hard to treat once established, and preventable with a monthly or injectable preventive prescribed by your veterinarian. Given Houston's calendar, the Society's guidance is prevention every month of the year.
- Heavy from May through October, spikes after rain
- Standing water in ditches, ponds and bayous
- Harris County mosquito surveillance
- Year-round heartworm prevention on the Gulf Coast
What it asks of your dog
A preventive every month, and a walk schedule that dodges the wet shade at dusk.
The dog's part is easy: the preventive from the vet, on time, every month, and a yearly test. The owner's part is the schedule. The heat calendar pushes outdoor training to dawn and dusk from May to September, and those are exactly the hours the mosquitoes are worst, so the answer is to choose the ground: open fields with a breeze over wooded trails, sidewalks over creek paths, and store aisles for the sessions that need distraction. After a heavy rain, the trails along Cypress Creek, Spring Creek and the bayous are the worst places in Houston for a week, and the pet and hardware stores along 290 are the best.
Human repellents are not safe for dogs; ask your veterinarian about products made for dogs before using anything, and never apply a human product to a dog's coat.
- Preventive every month, test every year
- Open, breezy ground over wet shade at dusk
- Store aisles for the distraction work
- A week off the creek trails after heavy rain
- No human repellents on the dog
How we prepare dogs
A field-trip route built for the calendar, and proof of prevention before a stay.
Every dog that comes to the training home arrives on heartworm prevention, and our team asks for the vaccination and prevention records at booking for that reason. The summer field-trip route is built around the heat and the mosquitoes together: early sessions on open ground with a breeze, the stores on 290 and Fry Road at midday, the lake in the evening with the wind off the water, and the wooded trails saved for the cool, dry weeks of October and November. Families can run the same schedule at home.
Heartworm preventive prescribed by your vet, given every month, with a yearly test
Dawn sessions on open ground with a breeze, not in the wooded shade
Midday sessions in the pet and hardware store aisles
Evening sessions on the lakeside or the boardwalk where the wind moves
A week off the creek and bayou trails after a heavy rain
Standing water dumped in the yard: bowls, saucers, toys, the kiddie pool
A dog-safe repellent only on your vet's advice

Heat, flooded streets and the fall window when the trails come back.
The heat calendar guide on this site sets the hours and this page sets the ground; together they are the summer training plan. The flooded-streets guide covers the standing water after storms, which is both the mosquito nursery and a hazard in its own right. October and November are the reward: cool, dry and mosquito-light for a few weeks, which is why fall is training season in Houston and why the Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and Spring Creek Greenway pages recommend those months. Families in Cypress and Katy near the retention ponds see the worst of the season; families in the inner loop near the bayous see it after every storm.
- Heat calendar for the hours, this page for the ground
- Flooded streets and standing water
- October and November as the trail months
- Retention ponds and bayous as the local sources

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Does my dog need heartworm prevention in winter in Houston?
Yes. The American Heartworm Society recommends year-round prevention everywhere in the United States and the Gulf Coast is its highest-risk region; a warm Houston January produces mosquitoes. Ask your veterinarian for the product and keep the yearly test.
When are mosquitoes worst for dog walks?
Dawn and dusk from May through October, especially in wooded shade near water and for the week after a heavy rain. Open ground with a breeze, sidewalks and store aisles are far better than creek trails in those hours.
Can I use bug spray on my dog?
Not a human product. Many are unsafe for dogs and some are toxic. Ask your veterinarian about products made for dogs, and remember that the preventive, not a repellent, is what protects against heartworm.
Do you train outside during mosquito season?
Every day, on ground chosen for it: open fields with wind at dawn, the stores at midday, the lakeside in the evening. The wooded trails wait for October. Every dog in the training home is on prevention, and our team asks for the records at booking.
