Seasons and weather
Fall is training season in Houston: the cool-weather window
Our trainers wait all summer for the first cool morning, because the wooded trails at Kickerillo-Mischer and Spring Creek, the Towne Lake boardwalk and the patios along 290 all come back at once, and a dog can be proofed everywhere in a single week.

The season
Mid-October to early December: cool mornings, dry trails, few mosquitoes, and a deadline.
Houston's first real cold front usually arrives in October and from then until the holidays the mornings run in the 50s and 60s, the afternoons in the 70s, and the humidity drops enough that pavement is safe all day. The National Weather Service calls it the driest stretch of the year, and the mosquitoes thin with it. It is short: a warm spell can put the heat back for a week in November, and by mid-December the storms and the occasional freeze return. For a dog owner it is the window when every outdoor place in the region is usable at once.
It is also the season with a calendar attached: Halloween on the 31st, Thanksgiving four weeks later, the December parties and the New Year's fireworks, each a test of the door, the place command and the leave-it.
- First front in October, cool through early December
- Dry trails, safe pavement, thin mosquitoes
- Warm spells that come back for a week
- Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas as the exams
What it asks of your dog
Everything, everywhere, in six weeks: the trails, the parks, the patios and the door.
Fall is when a dog meets the places it could not visit in August: the wooded trails at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve and along Spring Creek, the loop at Memorial Park at ten in the morning, the boardwalk at Towne Lake at noon, a brewery patio on a Saturday afternoon. For an untrained dog that is six weeks of rehearsing every bad habit in new places; for a dog in training it is the best proofing calendar of the year. The door is the other half, because the holidays are coming and the dog that jumps on guests in October will jump on thirty of them in November.
The heat rules do not vanish: an eighty-degree November afternoon on the boardwalk is still hot for a doodle, and the pavement test still applies on a warm day.

How we prepare dogs
The fall route, and stays timed to end before the guests arrive.
The training home's fall calendar is built backward from Thanksgiving. Stays that start in early October end in late October or mid-November with the go-home session done and a couple of weeks for the family to practice before the first dinner; the last stays that end before Christmas start in late November. Between the two, the field-trip route goes everywhere: the preserve trails in the morning, the stores at noon, the boardwalk and the patios in the afternoon, the lake for the water dogs while it is still warm enough to swim. Families training at home should run the same tour.

The holiday guides pick up where the fall leaves off, and the January regression follows.
The Halloween, holiday guests and New Year's fireworks guides on this site are the three exams of the season in order. The heat calendar guide explains why the summer forced everything to dawn and dusk and why fall is such a relief. The trail pages for the preserve, the greenway and the boardwalk name the places to go. And the regression page covers January, when a month of guests and table scraps has undone the fall's work and the family needs a reset week. Families in Cypress and Katy get the fall a few degrees cooler than the inner loop; the acreage dogs in Tomball and Magnolia get deer season and coyotes with it.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
When is the best time of year to train a dog in Houston?
Mid-October to early December. The mornings are cool, the trails are dry, the mosquitoes thin and every outdoor place in the region is usable for the first time since April. It is also the season before the holiday door exams, which is why our fall stays fill from September.
How late can I book a stay and still have the dog home for Thanksgiving?
A Gold stay is two weeks and Platinum three, plus a week or two for you to practice before the dinner. Starting in the first half of October is comfortable; a late-October start still works for Gold. Ask our team on the free phone consultation which dates are open.
Is it still too hot to walk at midday in October?
Sometimes. A warm spell in October or November puts the afternoons back in the 80s, and a doodle on the Towne Lake boardwalk at two is still working in heat. Use the pavement test on warm days and shift to the morning; the cool afternoons are the reward, not the rule.
What should I proof in the fall?
Everything the summer blocked: the trail walk past bikes and dogs, the recall on a long line in a dry field, the settle under a patio table at midday and the door with the doorbell. Six weeks is enough to visit every environment your dog will meet all year.
