Rules and life
Living with a dog in a Houston townhome
The townhome dog is the apartment dog with stairs, and the stairs and the garage are where the trouble starts: a puppy that flies down three flights, a senior that slips, a dog that bolts into the garage when the door goes up.

The place
Three floors, a garage entry, shared walls and a rug-sized patio, in the neighborhoods that build them.
Houston's townhomes cluster in the Heights, Rice Military, Montrose, Midtown and the streets around the Galleria, and the newer master-planned sections in Bridgeland, Towne Lake and Cinco Ranch have their own rows. The layout is the same: a garage on the ground floor that serves as the real front door, living on the second, bedrooms on the third, a patio or balcony too small to be a yard, and a neighbor on each side through a wall the dog can hear through. The pet rules come from the lease or the association: leashes, cleanup, often a pet limit and a nuisance clause for barking. The outdoor life is the walk, on pavement that is too hot for pads from late morning to evening in summer.
The garage is the townhome's front door and its biggest hazard, because the door opens onto the alley or the street with a car behind it, and a dog that bolts through it is in traffic in two seconds.
- Garage entry as the real front door
- Stairs on every trip
- Shared walls and a barking clause
- A patio that is not a yard
- Hot pavement for the walk in summer
What it asks of your dog
Potty on cue, a wait at the garage door, place on the main floor, quiet at the wall, and careful stairs.
The potty routine is the same as an apartment's: a leash, a cue, a fixed spot and fixed times, because the patio is not a yard and a dog that learns to use it will use it forever. The garage door needs a wait released on one word, practiced with the door going up, with a car in the drive and with a neighbor walking past. Place on the main floor with an hour of duration is what lets the family cook, eat and host without the dog underfoot or at the wall. The quiet cue keeps the neighbors friendly. And the stairs are a management question: a puppy carried or gated until its joints can take them, a senior on a runner with a gate at the top, every dog taught to go down slowly behind you rather than in front.
The hours alone are the last piece. A townhome dog is alone in a building full of noises, and a covered crate on the main floor with white noise is what keeps it quiet through the wall.
- Potty on a leash at set times, never on the patio
- A wait at the garage door, released with a word
- Place on the main floor with an hour of duration
- A quiet cue and a covered crate for the hours alone
- Stairs gated for puppies and seniors, taken slowly for every dog
How we prepare dogs
A stay with the handover in the townhome, and lessons that start at the garage door.
Townhome dogs come to the training home for Gold or Platinum and, with the transport, the go-home session happens in the townhome: the garage door, the stairs, place on the main floor, the quiet cue at the wall and the first walk to the neighborhood's trail or bayou. In-home lessons at $220 start at the garage door for the same reason. The stay builds the door routine with real arrivals, place with duration, the crate and the structured walk, and the field trips to the stores and sidewalks around Cypress stand in for the alley and the street.

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Can I train my dog to use the patio as a potty spot?
You can, and most families regret it, because the dog then treats every small outdoor surface as a toilet and the patio becomes unusable in summer. A leash, a cue, a fixed spot on the street and fixed times build a dog that goes on cue in two minutes, which is easier to live with.
Are stairs bad for a puppy?
Three flights several times a day is hard on growing joints, and a puppy that flies down them can hurt itself. Carry a small puppy, gate a larger one, and teach every dog to take the stairs slowly behind you. A senior needs a runner on the treads and a gate at the top.
My dog bolts into the garage when the door opens. How do I stop it?
A wait at the door into the garage, released with one word, practiced first with the garage door closed, then moving, then with a car in the drive and a neighbor walking past. It is the same door manners method as a front door, and the door-manners guide on this site covers it step by step.
How do I stop my dog barking through the shared wall?
No free access to the wall the noise comes through, place with duration in a spot away from it, a quiet cue rewarded for silence and white noise during the hours alone. If the dog is barking at footsteps out of fear, exposure at a level it can handle is the fix and a stay is the faster route.
