Escaping
Door dashing and escaping dog training in Houston: gates, doors and fences
Harris County Pets and BARC take in a lot of dogs that went through a front door while the groceries came in or over a fence on July 4. Most of them had families who never taught a threshold, because the door had always been closed until the day it was not.

What it is
The door, the gate and the fence as starting lines.
The door dasher waits for the crack of light and goes, past the delivery driver, the guest or the child, into the street. The gate escaper goes when the lawn crew leaves it open. The fence escaper climbs, digs or finds the gap behind the shed. All three share a dog that has never learned that a threshold is a place to stop, and most have a reason to go: a squirrel, another dog, a fear of something inside, or simply a big world and no rule about it.
It is dangerous in proportion to what is outside: a road in the suburbs, a bayou in the inner loop, coyotes and cars on acreage, and the dark on a fireworks night.
- Door dashing past guests, deliveries and children
- Gates left open by lawn and pool crews
- Climbing, digging and fence gaps
- A road, a bayou or the dark on the other side
Why it happens here
Open doors, service crews, fireworks and fences that hide gaps.
A Houston suburban house opens its front door a dozen times a day for deliveries and its gate weekly for the lawn crew and the pool service, and a dog with no threshold rule gets a dozen chances. Fireworks on July 4 and New Year's send dogs over fences that held every other night. Houston fences hide gaps under gates and behind sheds, and a dog that has been through one goes back to it. Storm season adds the panicked dog through a door left open by a family loading the car.
Under all of it is a dog with energy, no job and no rule at the door, which is the same dog that pulls and jumps.
- Deliveries and service crews as daily chances
- Fireworks nights and storm nights
- Fence gaps under gates and behind sheds
- No rule at the door, ever
How we fix it
The threshold rule, the gate wait, the fence check and the recall.
The threshold rule is taught with a leash and a hundred reps: the door opens a crack, the dog goes to place or holds a sit, the door closes; wider, longer, with a person on the far side, with a delivery. The door becomes the cue to stop. The same at the gate and the car door. The fence is walked and fixed, and a digger or a climber gets supervised yard time until the recall holds. Then the recall on a long line, in the yard, then the street, then past dogs and squirrels, so a dog that does get out turns around at the word.
In the training home the door work happens with real deliveries and real guests, the field trips practice the car door and the gate, and the go-home session runs the threshold at your own front door with the family. A dog that bolts toward other dogs gets the neutrality work as well.

Which program
Gold for the thresholds, Platinum for the recall against distractions, VIP for acreage.
A dog that dashes doors and gates but comes back when called responds to the two-week Gold program at $2,500: the threshold rule, impulse control, place and the go-home session at your door. A dog that bolts and does not come back, or bolts toward other dogs, needs the three-week Platinum program at $3,750 with the long-line recall against distractions, neutrality and unlimited lessons. An acreage dog that must be reliable off leash across a property takes VIP at $10,000 with the Mini-Educator introduced properly. Lessons at $220 suit a household that has the recall and needs the door routine set on site.
| Dog | Program | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Dashes doors but comes back when called | Gold, 2 weeks | $2,500 |
| Bolts and does not come back, or bolts toward dogs | Platinum, 3 weeks | $3,750 |
| Acreage dog that must be reliable off leash | VIP, 6 weeks | $10,000 |
Houston specifics
The July 4 fence, the microchip and the bayou.
Walk the fence and check every gate latch on July 1 and December 30, because those are the nights fences fail. Update the tag and the microchip record before either, because a dog that gets out in a master-planned suburb is usually found and only sometimes identified; Harris County Pets and BARC are where lost dogs go. A door dasher in the Heights or Memorial runs toward a bayou, which is why the recall matters as much as the threshold. And a family loading the car for a storm evacuation with a dog underfoot is a family that should crate the dog first, which is the crate calm every stay builds.
The programs
Programs for an escape artist.
Gold installs the thresholds, Platinum adds the recall against distractions, VIP makes an acreage dog reliable off leash.
Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
How do I stop my dog bolting out the front door?
Teach a threshold rule with a leash: the door opens a crack, the dog holds a sit or place, the door closes, and repeat a hundred times, wider and longer, with a person on the far side. The door becomes the cue to stop. It is standard Gold work and the go-home session runs it at your door.
My dog gets out and will not come back. What do I do?
Do not chase, which is a game the dog wins. Run the other way calling happily, or open the car door, which many dogs get into. Then build a recall on a long line against distractions so the next time the dog turns around at the word; that is Platinum work.
Why does my dog dig under the fence?
Boredom, a smell, another dog or a fear of something in the yard. Fix the gap, supervise yard time, give the dog a job before it goes out, and work whatever it is going toward. A digger left alone in a yard will find the next gap.
Will an invisible fence stop my dog?
An electronic boundary can hold a trained dog and is beaten by an untrained one with drive, which runs through it and then cannot come back. Boundaries are taught with a long line first, and the Mini-Educator in VIP is introduced only after the recall is solid, on the family's own land.
What should I do before fireworks night?
Walk the fence, check the latches, update the tag and the chip, walk the dog before dusk, and crate it with a chew and a fan before the first bang. Fences that hold every other night fail on July 4, and the crate is where the dog is safe.
