VIP and the Mini-Educator

E-collar board and train in Houston: how we introduce it, and when we do not

The e-collar is the most misunderstood tool in dog training, partly because it is sold two ways: as magic and as cruelty. It is neither. In our program it is a remote cue layered on top of obedience the dog already has, and this page says when it goes on and when it should not.

Who this is for

Who e-collar board and train is for, and who it is not for.

The owner who needs the leash to come off. Acreage in Waller or Magnolia, a Lake Conroe dock, hiking in the Sam Houston National Forest, a dog who runs beside you on a trail: these are goals where a leash is a limitation and a recall at two hundred yards is a safety issue. VIP exists for that owner, and the collar is how the recall becomes reliable at distance.

The owner whose dog knows the commands and ignores them. A three-year-old shepherd who sits beautifully in the kitchen and goes deaf at Bear Creek Pioneers Park does not need more teaching. He needs a way for you to be relevant when he is fifty feet away, and that is what a properly conditioned e-collar provides once obedience is in place.

Who it is not for. A dog whose problem is fear, a puppy under four months, an owner who wants a shortcut past the obedience work, or a family whose goal is a calm house and a pleasant walk. That family belongs in Gold or Platinum, both trained on leash, and our team will say so rather than sell a $10,000 program to solve a $2,500 problem.

How we introduce it

How the Mini-Educator is introduced: after the command, at the dog's level, never as a surprise.

Nothing goes on the dog's neck until he already understands the command on a leash. Recall, sit, down, place and heel are taught first with food, a leash and a marker word, and proofed around the training home. The collar is introduced only when a command is fluent, so the dog's first experience of the stimulation is a question he already knows the answer to.

The working level is found by starting at zero and moving up one step at a time until the dog shows the smallest sign of noticing: an ear flick, a glance. That is the level. The stimulation is paired with the leash cue he knows, then the leash pressure fades and the collar cue stands alone. It is never used to make a dog afraid, and never on a dog who already is.

1

Weeks 1 and 2: all obedience taught on leash with food and markers; the collar stays in the box.

2

Week 3: the collar is worn unused until it is unremarkable, then the working level is found.

3

Weeks 3 to 4: recall is the first command paired with the collar, on a long line in the yard, then sit, down, place and heel.

4

Week 5: the long line comes off in fenced areas, then on field trips to parks and the lake.

5

Week 6: off-leash proofing in public, the in-home handover, and your hands on the remote with our trainer beside you.

Price and inclusions

VIP is $10,000, and the e-collar, the transport and the in-home lessons are inside that price.

The VIP Service-Dog-Level Board & Train is six weeks in our trainer's home in Cypress for $10,000. It includes service-dog-level obedience, complete off-leash reliability, front and center positioning, duration stays, the Mini-Educator e-collar, transport to and from your home, an in-home handover, unlimited in-home lessons and lifetime support directly with our team. Service-dog-level means the reliability; it is not certification or task training.

A $250 reservation deposit holds your six weeks and is applied toward the $10,000. Because VIP includes transport and the in-home handover, there is nothing to add for pick-up or return. Gold at $2,500 and Platinum at $3,750 are the leash-based programs most families choose instead, and the table shows where the collar sits between them in the lineup.

  • $10,000 for six weeks, the collar and the remote included
  • $250 deposit reserves the dates and counts toward the total

Houston specifics

Off leash in Houston means bayous, gators, deer and heat, so the collar is proofed against all of it.

An off-leash dog in Harris County has to be recalled off the edge of a bayou, because alligators live in the bayous and reservoirs around Houston and a recall that fails once at the water has failed. Proofing in weeks five and six happens near real water and real wildlife. Deer in The Woodlands, coyotes on Waller acreage and fire ant mounds are part of the curriculum.

Heat sets the schedule. From May to September the off-leash sessions run before 8am and after 7pm, and a dog running free in ninety-degree humidity is watched for the early signs of heat stress the AVMA describes. Legal off-leash space here is a short list of fenced dog parks run by Houston Parks and Recreation and the county precincts, so the training assumes a leash law everywhere else.

  • Proofed near water and wildlife first
  • Summer sessions at dawn and dusk; the collar does not change the heat rules
  • Check the park operator's rules before the leash comes off

Which program fits

When we say no to the e-collar, and which program we point to instead.

Our team says no to e-collar board and train more often than yes. A fearful dog, a puppy under four months, a dog with a bite history whose owner wants the collar to stop the biting, or a family who wants a calmer house all hear the same thing: the collar is not the tool, and the program you need is on leash.

Platinum at $3,750 covers reactivity and aggression with behavior modification, field trips and unlimited lessons, and it is where most dogs with a serious problem belong. Gold at $2,500 covers the household basics. Both leave the door open to VIP later if an off-leash goal becomes real. Puppies under four months start with the Puppy Development Bundle at $550 or $750.

  • Fear or anxiety: Platinum's behavior work, not a collar
  • Aggression: Platinum with a management plan, never stimulation as punishment
  • A real off-leash goal on a dog with obedience: VIP, $10,000

The programs

VIP, and the two leash-based programs we usually recommend instead.

The collar is a VIP inclusion. Platinum and Gold cover most of the dogs whose owners ask about it.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Does the e-collar hurt the dog?

Used the way our trainers use it, no. The working level is the lowest setting the dog notices, found one step at a time, and it is a cue he has already learned to answer, not a punishment. A collar cranked high by a frustrated owner is a different thing, which is why you learn the remote with our trainer present.

Can I get the e-collar in a shorter program than VIP?

The Mini-Educator is an inclusion of the six-week VIP, because conditioning a collar properly and proofing it off leash in public takes that long. Gold and Platinum are trained on leash. If you want off-leash reliability, the honest answer is the full program rather than a collar bolted onto two weeks of obedience.

Will my dog wear the collar forever?

Most off-leash dogs keep wearing it when they are off leash, because it is the channel you communicate through at distance. In the house and on leash it is not needed. Your in-home lessons after VIP cover when it goes on and when it stays off.

Is the collar the fix for a reactive or aggressive dog?

No. Reactivity and aggression are handled in the three-week Platinum at $3,750 with behavior modification on leash and unlimited lessons afterward. Stimulating a dog while he is lunging teaches him that the other dog predicts discomfort, which makes things worse. The collar is a cue for a calm dog, not a brake for a frightened one.

How much is e-collar board and train in Houston?

It is the VIP program: six weeks for $10,000, with the Mini-Educator, transport, an in-home handover, unlimited in-home lessons and lifetime support all inside that number. A $250 reservation deposit secures the start date and is credited toward the balance. Nothing is added for the collar or the remote.
