Puppy training in The Woodlands: the first four months, the Puppy Development Bundle

A Woodlands puppy grows up with deer at the back fence, bikes on the pathway, an association that notices barking and mosquitoes that never quite leave. The bundle takes those into account from session one, because a recall that ignores a squirrel at ten weeks is the recall that ignores a deer at ten months.

Four sessions

Four sessions, with the forest used as the distraction from the second visit on.

Session one is the same everywhere: crate, potty routine, the marker word, handling and the food rule, delivered within days of the puppy arriving. In The Woodlands our trainer also looks at the back fence, because a village lot backs onto trees, and a puppy that finds the tree line interesting early is hard to call off it later.

From the second session the forest becomes the classroom. Sit and place are taught indoors and then on the patio with squirrels moving; the recall goes on a long line in the yard with the tree line as the distraction; the first pathway walk happens at a quiet hour with a bike or two passing at a distance. Each visit is 45 to 60 minutes, our trainer works the puppy first and then you, and the homework is two-minute drills several times a day.

1

Session one: the crate in the family room, the potty spot away from the tree line, the marker word, and handling.

2

Session two: sit, place and name recognition, then the same three on the patio with a squirrel in view, plus the nipping plan.

3

Session three: recall on a long line in the yard with the forest as the distraction, stay with duration, and a first pathway walk.

4

Session four: everything in a new place, the socialization tally, and the plan for adolescence, when the deer become irresistible.

Socialization

Socialization in The Woodlands is the waterway from a bench, Market Street from a mat and the pathway from your arms.

Before the vaccine series is done, the usual guidance is that a puppy's feet stay off ground that unknown dogs use. A bench on the waterway gives a puppy on your lap paddleboards, strollers, music and dogs passing at a width you choose. A mat under a table on a Market Street patio adds food and foot traffic. The stores along the main roads put the puppy in a cart past doors and strangers, and the pathway outside your village, from your arms at first, brings the bikes.

Once the vet clears the ground, Creekside Park's sidewalks and the edges of the Grogan's Mill trails let the puppy walk on its own feet at quiet hours, with the long line on and the recall practiced every few minutes. Deer are part of socialization here: a puppy that sees deer often, at a distance, with you calm, learns they are scenery, far easier than teaching an adolescent that has chased one.

  • A bench on the waterway from your lap: paddleboards, strollers, dogs at a distance
  • A Market Street patio on a mat under the table
  • The stores along the main roads from a cart
  • Your village pathway from your arms, then on a long line once cleared
  • The Grogan's Mill trail edges at a quiet hour, deer watched from a distance

Before eight weeks

Before the puppy arrives, close the fence, check the beds and plan for mosquitoes.

Walk the fence with a puppy's eyes: a gap at the bottom of a wooden fence that a deer fawn can squeeze under is one a ten-week-old can too. Check the beds against the toxic plant list; sago palms are on it and common in Houston landscaping. Look for fire ant mounds along the fence and by the patio, and choose the potty spot on the house side of the yard rather than by the trees.

Put the crate in the family room, choose the potty door, and settle the furniture rule before the puppy can argue. Book the first vet visit for the first week and ask about heartworm prevention, because the forest keeps mosquitoes active nearly all year in Houston. Read your association's pet rules now, and in summer plan potty trips on shaded grass and outings early and late.

  • The fence walked for gaps, especially along the tree line
  • Sago palms and other toxic plants identified and fenced off or removed
  • Fire ant mounds treated; the potty spot on the house side of the yard
  • The first vet visit and heartworm prevention booked; the HOA pet rules read

Bundle or a stay

The bundle builds the puppy; a stay later builds the dog that walks past deer.

The bundle covers the months when a puppy can only work for a few minutes at a time and the most important lessons are about trust, the crate and where to relieve itself. A board and train stay is for a dog with the stamina for daily structured training, and it usually enters the conversation at adolescence, when a Lab or a doodle starts hitting the end of the leash at every bike and deer. Gold is two weeks in our Cypress home for $2,500 and installs the walk, place, doors and impulse control; Platinum at $3,750 adds the behavior work if the pulling has become lunging.

The drive from The Woodlands is about 35 to 45 minutes via 249 and 99 outside rush hour, and the $250 transport with the in-home first lesson is there for families who want the go-home session on their own pathway.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Which villages do you cover for the in-home bundle?

All of them, from Grogan's Mill and Panther Creek to Creekside Park, Sterling Ridge and Alden Bridge, at $750 for the four sessions. Families who prefer to bring the puppy to our Cypress home pay $550, with the drive about 35 to 45 minutes via 249 and 99 outside rush hour.

Can a ten-week-old puppy really learn a recall around deer?

It can learn the beginning of one: coming to a marker word on a long line in the yard with the tree line as the distraction. That is what session three builds. A recall that holds off leash with a deer running is adult work, proofed later in a stay, but the puppy that starts now has far less to unlearn.

Our HOA is strict about barking. Does the bundle help with that?

It helps prevent it. A puppy that has a place bed, a crate it likes and a quiet cue learned early is far less likely to become the dog barking at the fence all afternoon. If the puppy is already barking at deer through the window, session two adds a quiet cue and window management. For the current rules, ask your association directly.

What about mosquitoes and outings for a young puppy?

Ask your veterinarian about heartworm prevention at the first visit, because in The Woodlands the mosquito season is most of the year. For outings, dawn and dusk are the worst hours for mosquitoes and the best for cool pavement in summer, so keep those outings short until the puppy is on prevention.
