In-home dog training in the Memorial Villages: private lessons at your house, $220

The villages are country lots with city distractions: a long driveway and a gate, a pool, a housekeeper and a landscaping crew, and a bayou trail at the end of the street. A village dog needs boundaries and manners for all of it, and a lesson on the property is the format that trains at the actual gate.

At your house

A village lesson covers the gate, the pool and the people, with the staff in the room.

The first fifteen minutes are a walk of the property with the dog loose: the gate and what happens when it opens, the driveway, the pool, the back fence and the door the housekeeper uses. Our trainer asks who is on the lot during the week, because a village dog is handled by a family, a nanny, a housekeeper and a landscaping crew, and the training only holds if the rules are shared. We ask for whoever is available to join the lesson.

The mechanics use a long line and a clear edge. The dog learns a boundary at the gate, first with the gate closed, then open, then with a car arriving, with our trainer handling the first rounds and you and your staff taking turns after. The pool gets a wait at the edge and a recall out of the water. Guests and deliveries get a place command in the front hall that holds through an arrival. Shepherds and Dobermans that guard the driveway get a plan that begins with structure and management.

Homework is a written plan for everyone: the gate rule at every arrival, place during dinner, and a long-line walk on the bayou trail with the leash on near the water. A copy goes to the household staff.

1

The property walk: gate, driveway, pool, back fence, staff entrance, and the dog's reaction to each.

2

Gate boundary on a long line: closed, then open, then with a vehicle arriving.

3

Pool rule: wait at the edge, release, recall out, with each adult taking a turn.

4

Place in the front hall through a staged arrival, then a real one.

5

The shared plan: one rule set for the family, the nanny, the housekeeper and the crew.

What we see

Village dogs go out of the gate, into the pool and at the housekeeper's car, because nobody set the edges.

The Lab or doodle with an acre to roam does not know where the acre ends. It bolts through the gate when the landscapers arrive, jumps in the pool during a party and greets each guest at chest height. The shepherds and Dobermans the villages favor add a harder version: barking at the housekeeper's car every morning, guarding the driveway from the pool crew, and lunging at bikes on the bayou trail. None of it is untrainable, but the guarding needs an consultation before a plan.

The recall is the other village failure. A dog that comes in the backyard ignores you on the Buffalo Bayou trail behind the villages, where there are bikes, other dogs and, from spring into fall, alligators in the water. The leash stays on near the bayou until the recall is proven on a long line, which is lesson work.

  • Jumping into the pool during a party and ignoring the recall
  • Barking at and guarding against the housekeeper's car

Lessons or a stay

Boundaries and manners suit lessons; guarding and off-leash reliability suit a stay.

Four to six lessons at $220 will put a boundary at the gate, a rule at the pool and a place in the front hall for a dog that has some training and a household that applies the rules. A dog that guards the driveway or lunges on the trail needs daily structure and controlled exposure to real arrivals, which is three weeks of Platinum in our Cypress home, $3,750, with unlimited lessons afterwards at your gate. A dog that must be reliable off leash across the whole lot is a VIP dog: six weeks, $10,000, with the Mini-Educator e-collar included, transport included and the handover at your house.

Gold, two weeks for $2,500, covers the manners for a dog that is excitable but not guarding. The free phone consultation is where our team hears the full story and recommends the format, and for a guarding dog it is followed by an in-person look before anything is booked.

Around the villages

The bayou trail, Memorial Park and Memorial Drive are the classrooms beyond the gate.

After the gate and the pool, the lesson moves down the street to the Buffalo Bayou trails behind the villages for neutrality past bikes and a long-line recall, then to Memorial Park and Terry Hershey Park for distance work on wider paths, and to the stores and patios along Memorial Drive and Voss for calm around carts and a settle under a table.

The bayou floods in storm season and holds alligators in the warm months; the leash is on near the water until the recall is proven, and a crate-calm dog is the safer dog when a June through November storm closes the roads. From May to September the trail work happens before nine or after seven, and the shade on your own lot carries the midday portion of a lesson.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can our housekeeper and nanny be part of the lesson?

Yes, and the lesson works better when they are. Our trainer teaches the gate rule, the door rule and the leash handling to everyone who takes care of the dog, and the written plan is shared with the household. One rule set from five people works; five rule sets do not.

How far are the villages from your training home?

Around half an hour to Cypress along I-10 and 290 or the Beltway outside rush hour. Families who take a stay either drop off in Cypress or add the $250 transport so the go-home session happens at the house with the staff present. A lesson at the training home is $160 rather than $220.

Can a lesson stop our dog going out of the gate?

It can teach the boundary, on a long line with real arrivals as the practice, and for most dogs that holds within a few lessons as long as the gate is managed in between. A dog that will be loose on the lot with nobody watching needs the boundary proofed with the Mini-Educator, which is VIP work, not lesson work.

Our Doberman barks at the pool crew and the housekeeper. Lessons or a stay?

Tell our team the full story on the free phone consultation and expect an in-person consultation before anything is booked. Guarding needs structure, a management plan and controlled exposure to real arrivals every day, which is Platinum in our Cypress home; the unlimited lessons afterwards at your gate keep the household consistent.
