Puppy training in Katy: the first four months, the Puppy Development Bundle

Katy is master-planned from Cinco Ranch out past 99, which means an HOA, a pool in the backyard, a sidewalk to every park and a golden or doodle puppy in a lot of the houses. The bundle was built for that puppy, that yard and the kids who will be carrying it around.

Four sessions

Four visits, one skill set each, with the kids and the pool written into the plan.

A Katy puppy usually lands in a house with children, a pool and a schedule built around school, so the first session is as much about the household as the dog. Our trainer places the crate, picks the potty spot, teaches the marker word and sets the two rules that save the most trouble later: how the kids pick the puppy up, and where the puppy is when the pool gate opens.

The next three are spaced a week to ten days apart. Every session runs 45 to 60 minutes with breaks, our trainer works the puppy first and then hands it to you and to any child old enough to hold a leash, and the written plan that follows is two-minute drills several times a day.

1

Session one, the first days home: crate placement, the potty spot, the marker word, and the rule for how the kids handle the puppy.

2

Session two: sit, a place bed in the family room, name recognition, and the nipping plan for a puppy that has discovered ankles.

3

Session three: recall on a long line in the backyard with the pool gate shut, stay with short duration, and the first leash walk on the sidewalk.

4

Session four: the same skills in a new location, the socialization tally reviewed, and the plan for months four through twelve.

Socialization

Katy socialization is Mary Jo Peckham from a bench, LaCenterra from a mat and Katy Mills from a cart.

Socialization in the bundle is a list of calm first impressions, collected before sixteen weeks and mostly with the puppy's feet off the ground until your veterinarian says the vaccine series is done. Mary Jo Peckham Park has kids, ducks and walkers a puppy can watch from a lap on a bench. The stores around Katy Mills let a puppy ride in a cart past automatic doors, carts and strangers. LaCenterra's patios give a mat under a table a real test with food and foot traffic passing.

The Cinco Ranch sidewalks at school pickup are a socialization session on their own: scooters, strollers, other dogs at a distance and a lot of noise, watched from your arms at first. Cullen Park's wide paths are where the puppy walks on its own feet once the vet clears it, with bikes passing at a width you choose. Skip the dog park until the puppy has a recall and its adult confidence.

Before eight weeks

A Katy yard needs three checks before the puppy arrives: the pool, the fence and the fire ants.

The pool comes first. A puppy can be in the water in the time it takes to answer the door, so a fence or a gate between the house and the pool is the one thing to have in place before the puppy comes home. The fence around the yard is next; a new sod yard in Katy usually has a gap under a gate that a ten-week-old fits through. Fire ants love new sod, and a puppy stung on the potty spot will stop using it, so walk the yard and treat the mounds.

Inside, decide where the crate lives and put it in the family room rather than the laundry room, choose the potty door, and agree the furniture rule. Book the first vet visit for the first week and ask about heartworm prevention; in Houston that conversation happens at the first visit. Read your HOA's pet rules now, before a neighbor mentions them.

  • A fence or gate between the house and the pool, in place before day one
  • The yard fence walked for gaps a small puppy fits through
  • Fire ant mounds treated, especially in new sod
  • The HOA's pet rules read, the first vet visit booked

Bundle or a stay

Start with the bundle; keep a Gold stay in reserve for the teenage months.

A puppy under four months does not need a board and train. What it needs is a household that knows how to shape it, which is the bundle's job, and a set of first impressions that make the world ordinary. A stay comes into the picture at adolescence, when a seventy-pound golden with the manners of a puppy starts dragging a child down a Cinco Ranch sidewalk. Gold is two weeks in our Cypress home for $2,500, and a bundle puppy usually arrives with the sit, the place and the recall already in place, which makes the stay a polish rather than a rebuild.

Katy is close enough that most families drop off in Cypress themselves, about 25 to 35 minutes up 99, and do the go-home session there. The $250 transport with the in-home first lesson is available if the school run makes the drive hard.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Do you come to Cinco Ranch, Fulshear and the communities past 99?

Yes. The in-home bundle at $750 covers Katy, Cinco Ranch, Fulshear, Cross Creek Ranch and the newer communities along 99 and 1463. If you would rather drive, the training home in Cypress is about 25 to 35 minutes away outside rush hour and the four sessions there are $550.

Is it worth driving to Cypress for the $550 price?

For a family whose main worries are the sit, the recall and socialization, yes; the drive is short and the puppy gets a new environment on each visit, which is itself good exposure. For a family whose worries are the pool gate, the crate placement or a toddler and a puppy in the same room, the in-home version earns its price because the trainer sees the actual house.

Our puppy bites the kids' ankles. Is that in the bundle?

Yes. Nipping is normal at this age and it is fixed by teaching the puppy what to do with its mouth instead, giving the kids a script for when it happens, and building an off switch on the place bed. It is covered in session two and reviewed in every session after.

Can a puppy learn to stay out of the pool?

It can learn to wait at the gate and to come when called away from the water, which is what session three works on with a long line. It cannot be trusted alone near water at this age, and the fence or gate stays the real safeguard through the first year.
