Puppy training in Friendswood: quiet streets and the first real walks

Friendswood streets are wide, quiet and full of families, which makes the first real walks easy on the puppy and easy on you. The big yards are the catch: a puppy with half an acre of grass never learns to walk on a leash unless somebody makes it, and that is where the bundle earns its place.

The four sessions

Four sessions in your Friendswood house, with the first walk on your own street.

Session one lands in the puppy's first week home, and in Friendswood it usually starts in the yard. A big lot means a big choice of potty spots, so the trainer picks one near the door, checks the fence for the gaps a small puppy fits through and walks the beds for anything toxic. Inside, the crate goes where the family spends its evenings, the marker word is taught, and the household agrees the rules the puppy cannot yet break: the furniture, the door, the kids' handling.

Sessions two, three and four follow about a week apart. Sit and the place bed arrive with the nipping plan; the recall starts in the hallway and moves to a long line in the yard; and in session three the puppy takes its first real walk on your street, on a leash, after the vet has cleared the ground. Session four repeats everything at a new spot, a quiet park corner or the downtown sidewalk, and writes the plan for the months between four and twelve.

1

Session one, first week home: potty spot chosen, fence checked, crate placed, marker word taught, house rules agreed.

2

Session two: sit, place on a bed, the nipping plan, and recall from room to room.

3

Session three: the first leash walk on your street, stay with duration, recall on a long line in the yard.

4

Session four: the same skills at a new location, the storm-season crate routine, and the adolescent plan.

A Friendswood puppy's calendar

Summer heat, a long vaccine wait and a big yard: the Friendswood puppy realities.

A Friendswood summer is long and close to the coast, and from May through September the puppy's outings move to before nine and after seven. Potty trips go to a shaded spot, the water bowl goes outside as well as in, and every walk starts with a hand on the sidewalk to test the heat. Fire ant mounds show up in a big lawn after every rain, and a puppy that gets stung in the yard will stop going out there.

The vaccine series finishes around sixteen weeks, and until your veterinarian confirms it the puppy's feet stay off ground used by unknown dogs. Friendswood has plenty to see from your arms: the downtown patios from a mat under your chair, the pet and hardware stores on FM 528 from a cart, and Stevenson Park from a bench where the puppy watches kids, dogs and strollers pass. Centennial Park's paths and the neighborhood trails come after clearance, on a long line, at a quiet hour.

Friendswood houses have big yards, established trees, pools in many of them and an HOA in the newer sections. The pool needs a barrier before the puppy arrives, not after. And the storm season, June through November, is something Friendswood families take seriously: a puppy that treats its crate as a bedroom in September is a dog that can ride out a warning, or an evacuation, without panic.

  • Outings before nine and after seven from May through September; a hand on the sidewalk first
  • Downtown patios from a mat, the FM 528 stores from a cart, Stevenson Park from a bench
  • Centennial Park and the neighborhood trails on a long line after the vet's clearance
  • A pool barrier in place before day one; the crate practiced before the first storm warning

Bundle or a stay

The bundle until four months; a Gold stay with transport when the yard outgrows the manners.

We do not board puppies under four months. A puppy that age learns best with its family in the room, in lessons measured in minutes, and the bundle gives you exactly that. At about four to five months the puppy can hold structure for a full day, and a stay becomes worth the trip: Gold, two weeks at our Cypress home for $2,500, builds sit and stay, place and stay, the loose leash, door boundaries and impulse control, and includes the go-home session, one extra lesson and lifelong support.

Friendswood is 60 to 70 minutes from Cypress, so a later stay almost always comes with the $250 door-to-door transport, and that brings the go-home session to your house. Platinum at $3,750 is the choice for the strong adolescent that has started pulling a child down the sidewalk.

Prices

Friendswood bundle pricing, and the honest note about the Cypress price.

The bundle is $750 at your Friendswood home, and that is the price to plan on. The $550 version at our Cypress training home exists and you are welcome to it, but four round trips of 60 to 70 minutes each way with a puppy that cannot hold its bladder that long is not a saving in any way that matters. The in-home trainer also sees the yard, the pool gate and the crate, which is most of what the plan is about.

Past four months, private lessons at $220 in your home continue the same work. A stay is reserved with a $250 deposit, transport is $250 and includes the first lesson at your house, and the VIP program includes transport in its price.

  • $750: four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes at your Friendswood home
  • $220 per in-home private lesson once the puppy is past four months
  • $250 to reserve a stay; $250 transport with the first lesson at your house

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How soon after we bring the puppy home should the first session be?

The same week, ideally within the first three or four days. The crate routine, the potty spot and the rule about what the puppy may bite are set in the first week whether you plan them or not, and it is far easier to set them right than to undo them. Call before the puppy arrives and our team will hold the slot.

Can the puppy start leash walks around the block right away?

In your own yard and driveway, yes, from the first days, on a light leash and for a minute or two. On the street and the neighborhood trails, wait for your veterinarian to confirm the vaccine series is complete, usually around sixteen weeks. Friendswood's quiet streets are a gentle first walk when that day comes, and session three is timed to it.

Our yard is huge. Why does the puppy need walks at all?

Because a yard teaches a puppy nothing about the leash, the sidewalk or the neighbor's dog, and a big yard teaches it that running is the answer to everything. Walks build the check-in and the loose leash that make the yard safe later. Ten minutes on the street does more for a puppy's manners than an hour of yard zoomies.

What happens if a hurricane warning lands during the bundle?

The crate routine is built for it. From session one the crate is the puppy's calm place, and we ask you to practice short closed-door sessions daily so a long one in a storm or a car is nothing new. Keep the vaccine records and food in the go bag with the crate. Sessions reschedule around any weather Ready Harris takes seriously.
