In-home lessons in Friendswood

In-home dog training in Friendswood: quiet streets, big yards, lessons at home

Friendswood is quiet streets, large lots and big yards, established neighborhoods and newer HOA sections with pools, and a lot of Labs, goldens, shepherds and rescues who spend most of the day behind a fence. The lesson starts where the dog is, and that is usually the backyard.

At your house

A Friendswood lesson starts in the backyard, because that is where the dog lives.

Our trainer begins with ten minutes inside, dog loose, listening to what you want changed, then goes straight to the yard. A big Friendswood yard means the dog has never needed a recall, so the first exercise is a long line and a name that means come, with our trainer making the first calls and you the rest. Then the fence: a dog that runs it barking at the neighbor's Lab learns a place on the patio instead.

Inside, the front door gets a sit before it opens, because on a quiet street the doorbell is rare enough that the dog has never practiced it. Then the walk, which for many Friendswood dogs is also rare, so the pull is strong: your street on a loose leash, our trainer first, you with coaching after. You keep a written plan for three short sessions a day.

1

Ten minutes inside, dog loose, your list.

2

The yard on a long line: a recall that works past the fence and the squirrels.

3

The fence line: a place on the patio instead of a patrol.

4

The front door: a sit before it opens, for the rare visitor.

5

Your street on leash, with our trainer showing the first pass.

6

The written plan, the daily minutes, the next date.

What we see

A big yard hides three problems: no recall, no walk and a door nobody practices.

The recall is first. A golden with a quarter acre to itself has never had to come when called until the gate is left open, and then it is three streets away. The walk is second: a dog that gets its exercise in the yard walks twice a month, and each of those walks is a fight because pulling has never been trained out of it.

The door is third, and on a Friendswood street it is a shepherd or a rescue that hears the bell once a week and treats every visitor as an intruder. Rescues bring their own version: a dog that is fine with the family and unsure of everyone else, which is a lesson problem when it is shyness and a stay problem when it has bitten. Storm season adds the crate, which most big-yard dogs have never seen.

  • No recall in a quarter-acre yard until the gate is open
  • A walk twice a month, and every one of them a fight
  • A rescue that guards the front door from the rare visitor
  • A dog that has never been crated, in hurricane country

Prices

$220 at your Friendswood door, and why nobody drives to Cypress for $160 from here.

An in-home lesson anywhere in Friendswood is $220, one at a time, no package. The same lesson at our training home in Cypress is $160, but at 60 to 70 minutes each way via the Beltway and 290, the saving does not cover the drive, and we would rather come to you. A puppy under four months takes the Puppy Development Bundle: four sessions of 45 to 60 minutes, $750 at your house or $550 in Cypress.

There is no travel fee on lessons in Friendswood, and the same holds next door in Pearland and League City. The $250 door-to-door transport is a board and train service, pickup and return with the first lesson at your house, and it is part of VIP.

  • $220 per in-home lesson in Friendswood, no travel fee
  • $160 in Cypress, 60 to 70 minutes away, rarely chosen
  • The puppy bundle at $750 in your home or $550 in ours, under four months
  • $250 transport for a stay, the Friendswood default, included in VIP

Lessons or a stay

Lessons for a rescue that is unsure; a stay for one that has bitten or panics alone.

Four to six lessons at $220 handle the recall, the walk, the door and the crate for a dog with some structure and a family that practices daily. A dog that has bitten, that lunges at other dogs with intent or that destroys the house when left alone needs structure and controlled exposure every day. For that dog the answer is Gold, two weeks for $2,500, or Platinum, three weeks for $3,750, which adds behavior modification, field trips and unlimited private lessons afterwards.

From Friendswood the stay works because of the transport: our team picks the dog up at your door, and the go-home session and every follow-up lesson happen in your yard. The free consultation call is where we say which one your dog needs, and lessons win whenever they will do.

Around Friendswood

Stevenson Park, the downtown patios and the FM 528 stores once the yard holds.

When the yard and the door are solid, the lesson leaves the property. Stevenson Park and Centennial Park are City of Friendswood parks with open grass for a long-line recall and enough walkers to test a loose leash; the city's site has the current rules. The downtown patios are where the settle meets food and strangers, and the pet and hardware stores on FM 528 handle carts, sliding doors and strangers.

From May through September lessons run early or after six, because the pavement fails the hand test by mid-morning and a big yard offers less shade than it looks. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and Friendswood takes it seriously, so the crate goes into the first lesson: a dog that settles in one on a calm night is a dog you can shelter with when it matters.

  • Stevenson Park and Centennial Park for recall on a long line
  • The downtown patios for the settle
  • The FM 528 stores for carts and doors
  • The crate before June 1

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

Can a lesson teach a recall to a dog that has never left the yard?

Yes, and the yard is the right classroom for it. The dog learns on a long line that coming when called pays every time, first with nothing happening, then past the fence dog and the squirrels. Three or four lessons and daily practice usually get a reliable recall inside the yard; off leash outside it takes longer.

Our rescue is fine with us and growls at visitors. Lessons or a stay?

If the growl is uncertainty and the dog has never made contact, lessons: the dog learns a place away from the door, visitors are introduced at a distance it can handle, and the distance shrinks over weeks. If the dog has bitten, it needs daily structure and controlled exposure, which is a Platinum stay in Cypress with lessons in your home afterwards.

How far is Friendswood from your training home?

About 60 to 70 minutes to Cypress via the Beltway and 290 outside rush hour, and more at the wrong hour. That is why the lesson comes to you at $220 and why a stay from Friendswood almost always uses the $250 transport, which brings the first lesson and the go-home session to your house.

Will you help our dog get used to a crate before hurricane season?

Yes, and we recommend doing it in spring. The dog learns to settle in the crate on a calm evening, with the door open first and closed later, in the room where the family would shelter. By June the crate is a familiar place, not a new one, and a storm night is much easier on everyone.
