Breed training guides

How to train a border collie

The border collies that arrive at the training home are brilliant, anxious and busy, and most of them have a family who bought a working dog for a subdivision and did not know what that meant. It can be a wonderful match, and the plan below is how.

The breed in Houston

A working dog bred for sheep and open hills, in a city with neither.

The border collie was bred to move sheep across hills all day using its eye, its speed and its judgment, and every trait that made it the best herding dog in the world makes it a difficult pet: an intensity that never rests, a stare that fixes on anything that moves, a sensitivity that reads every mood in the house and a brain that needs work more than the body needs miles. Houston gives it a small yard, a hot summer and a lot of children on bikes, and the collie herds the children, chases the bikes and spends the afternoon staring at the ceiling fan.

  • Intensity and an eye that fixes on movement
  • Sensitivity to every mood in the house
  • A brain that needs work more than the body needs miles
  • Herding of children, bikes and cars
  • Obsession with balls, lights and shadows if unmanaged

The puppy months

Eight weeks to six months: the off switch before the brain wakes up.

A border collie puppy learns place, sit and down in a weekend, so the priority is the thing it does not learn naturally: how to be still. Place with duration from the first week, the crate for real rest, and naps enforced, because an overtired collie puppy is a nipping, spinning mess. Children and cyclists are taught as neutral from the start: the puppy sees them at a distance, is paid for looking at you, and never gets to chase. Ball games have a start and a stop from day one, and the ball goes away when the game ends, because the obsession begins with an endless fetch. Sessions are short, three minutes and done, and the puppy is left wanting more.

  • Place with duration and the crate before any tricks
  • Naps enforced against the spinning
  • Children and bikes seen at a distance, paid for looking at you
  • Ball games with a start, a stop and the ball put away
  • Three-minute sessions that end early

Adolescence

Six to eighteen months: the eye sharpens, the herding starts, and the obsessions set.

Adolescence in a border collie is when the working traits arrive in full: the stare fixes on the kids in the pool, the heels get nipped, cars and joggers become a chase, and the ball or the flashlight becomes something the dog cannot stop thinking about. It is also when a sensitive collie can become fearful or reactive if the world is too much. The answer is structure and a job: place with real duration, a structured walk that keeps the dog at your knee past the joggers, a leave-it that covers movement, and a daily task, obedience with precision, a search, trick chains, a puzzle, that uses the brain. Obsessions are managed by removing the object and replacing the outlet; they do not fade on their own.

1

Eight to twelve weeks: crate, place, name, short sessions, the ball with a rule

2

Three to five months: the walk at the knee, children and bikes at a distance, the puppy bundle if you want help

3

Five to eight months: the structured walk on the street, store trips, leave-it for movement

4

Eight to twelve months: place with an hour of duration, the eye interrupted early, no chase games

5

Twelve to eighteen months: neutrality proofed on trails past joggers and bikes, a daily job set

6

Eighteen months on: the brain work that keeps a collie sane, obedience with precision, searches, tricks

7

Every day for life: a job, a walk and an off switch

The problems we see

Herding the children, chasing cars, obsession, and a dog that cannot settle.

Herding the children is a leave-it for movement, place with duration whenever the kids run, and a rule that the dog is never loose with running children until the eye is under control; it is also a rule for the children, who stop running when the dog stares. Chasing cars and joggers is a structured walk with the dog thinking at your knee and neutrality built at a distance, closer over weeks, and it is one of the most dangerous habits we fix. Obsession with a ball, a light or a shadow is management, the object gone, and a replacement job that satisfies the brain. A collie that cannot settle needs place with an hour of duration built patiently and a family that stops trying to tire it out.

  • Leave-it for movement and place when the kids run
  • A structured walk past cars and joggers
  • The object removed and a job in its place
  • Place with an hour of duration for the dog that cannot settle
  • Fear worked with structure and distance

Summer and enrichment

A working dog with no work, in a heat that cancels the afternoon.

A border collie in a Houston summer works its brain indoors: obedience with precision and duration, trick chains, a search for kibble through the house, a puzzle, a short tug with rules, and the store aisles at noon. The body gets a dawn walk and a dusk walk, on a leash, with the pavement test at the door, and a swim with a recall if there is water the dog is allowed in. The fall brings the open ground back, and a long line in a field at Kickerillo-Mischer or on the Spring Creek Greenway is where the collie gets to run. Herding lessons and agility exist around Houston and suit the breed once the off switch is built; the agility program at the training home is one route.

  • Brain work indoors as the daily job
  • Dawn and dusk walks with the pavement test
  • A swim with a recall where allowed
  • A long line in a field in the cool months
  • Agility or herding once the off switch exists

Which program

Platinum for the chaser and the herder, Gold for the off switch, Agility for the graduate.

Platinum, three weeks at $3,750, is the border collie program for the dog that chases cars, herds the children or has become reactive, because those need daily structure and neutrality work and the unlimited lessons afterwards keep a sharp dog's rules in place. Gold, two weeks at $2,500, builds the off switch, place with duration, the structured walk and impulse control for the collie that is simply too busy. The Agility Board and Train, two weeks at $2,500, is the job for a graduate with basic obedience: weave poles, jumps, the A-frame, tunnels and the seesaw. The Puppy Development Bundle at $550 or $750 in-home is the right start for a puppy under four months, and the border collie training page covers each in Houston terms.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this.

How do I stop my border collie herding the kids?

A leave-it for movement, place with duration whenever the children run, and no loose time with running kids until the eye is under control. The children learn to stop and stand when the dog stares. A collie that has nipped heels for months needs a stay to rebuild the rule; a puppy needs it from day one.

Does a border collie need hours of exercise?

It needs a job more than hours. A collie run for two hours and given nothing to think about is fitter and no calmer. Obedience with precision, searches, trick chains and a structured walk satisfy the brain; place with duration builds the off switch. In a Houston summer the job is indoors anyway.

Why does my border collie stare at lights and shadows?

The eye that was bred to fix on sheep fixes on whatever moves when there are no sheep, and a flashlight game or an endless fetch can turn it into a compulsion. Remove the object, stop the game, and replace it with a job that uses the brain. Obsessions in this breed do not fade on their own.

Is a border collie a good family dog in Houston?

For a family that gives it a daily job, an off switch and rules about the children, yes, and a brilliant one. For a family that wanted a dog to lie by the pool, no. The heat limits the outdoor work to dawn and dusk for half the year, so the job has to be a mental one.
