Destructive chewing
Destructive chewing training in Houston: drywall, baseboards and boredom
A chewed shoe is boredom. A chewed door frame is panic. The two look the same on the floor and are opposite problems, and the family that punishes the second one makes it worse. This page tells them apart.

Which kind of chewing
Boredom, teething or anxiety: the damage tells you.
A bored dog chews things that smell of its people, shoes, remotes, cushions, in the middle of a long afternoon, and greets the family cheerfully when they come home. A teething puppy, roughly three to seven months, chews everything within reach, especially hard things, and drools and mouths hands too. An anxious dog chews exits: the door frame, the windowsill, the blinds, the crate bars, usually within minutes of being left, and may soil the house or howl as well. It greets the family like a dog that has been through something.
Naming which one you have decides everything, because the boredom fix, a job and a crate, makes the anxious dog worse if the crate is a box it panics in.
- Boredom: shoes and cushions, late in the day, cheerful greeting
- Teething: everything, three to seven months, drooling and mouthing
- Anxiety: door frames, windowsills and blinds within minutes of leaving
- Punishing any of them after the fact teaches nothing
Why it happens here
Long empty days, adolescent doodles and the summer indoors.
Houston households are out from seven to four, and a young dog with a yard and no job spends those hours inventing one. The summer makes it worse, because the dog is indoors for five months with no morning mileage and a house full of things to chew. Adolescent doodles, Labs and shepherds are the chewers we see most, and the rescues from BARC and Harris County Pets add the anxious version, a dog that has been left before and does not trust that the door opens again.
Drywall and baseboards are a Houston specialty because of the new-build houses in the master-planned suburbs: soft materials, a bored dog and a family that comes home to a hole.
- Empty houses from seven to four
- Summer indoors with no outlet
- Adolescents of energetic breeds
- New-build drywall and baseboards
How we fix each
A job and a crate, frozen chews and supervision, or the separation work.
Boredom: the dog gets a structured walk and ten minutes of training before the house empties, a crate or a gated room with two legal chews for the day, and everything else out of reach. A dog that has worked for half an hour sleeps for two. Teething: frozen chews, a rotation of textures, supervision and redirection, and the crate for unsupervised time, for the few months it lasts. Anxiety: the dog learns to be alone in small steps, seconds then minutes then an hour, with departures made boring and the crate rebuilt as a den rather than a trap, which is separation work and takes weeks.
In the training home every dog learns the crate, the place bed and being alone as part of its stay, and the handover sets the daily routine that keeps the house intact.

Which program
Lessons for boredom, the bundle for teething, Platinum for the anxious chewer.
A bored chewer responds to an in-home lesson at $220 and a routine you run: the morning work, the crate, the chews. A teething puppy is covered by the Puppy Development Bundle, $550 in Cypress or $750 in your home, where the crate and the chew rotation are set up with everything else. An anxious chewer that destroys exits when left needs the three-week Platinum program at $3,750, because the chewing is separation anxiety and the independence has to be rebuilt daily by someone who does it for a living, with unlimited lessons afterwards. A Gold stay at $2,500 suits the bored adolescent that needs the whole foundation, not just the chewing fixed.
| Chewing | Program | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Boredom, household ready to run a routine | In-home lesson | $220 |
| Teething puppy under four months | Puppy Development Bundle | $550 / $750 |
| Bored adolescent with no foundation | Gold, 2 weeks | $2,500 |
| Exits chewed when left: anxiety | Platinum, 3 weeks | $3,750 |
Houston specifics
The summer, the storm and what a chewed thing can do to a dog.
Chewing calls peak in July and August, when the Houston heat keeps dogs indoors and under-exercised; the indoor sessions and store aisles that carry a summer stay are how a dog learns to be tired without mileage. A dog that chews exits only during storms is chewing from fear, and the crate work for storm season is the plan. And some chewed things hurt the dog: cords, batteries, sago palm and oleander in the yard, mulch, the toads on a wet night. The ASPCA's poison line and its plant list are worth saving, and a dog that has swallowed part of what it chewed goes to the vet.
The programs

Asked and answered
Questions people ask about this.
Why does my dog chew the door frame only when I leave?
That is separation anxiety, not boredom: the dog is chewing at the exit within minutes of the door closing. A crate alone can make it worse if the dog panics in it. Independence is rebuilt in small steps, which is Platinum work, and the separation anxiety page explains it.
How do I stop a puppy chewing everything?
Frozen chews, a rotation of textures, supervision, redirection to a legal chew and the crate for unsupervised minutes, for the three to seven months teething lasts. The Puppy Development Bundle sets it up with the crate and the potty routine.
Should I punish my dog when I find a chewed shoe?
No. The dog cannot connect the punishment to the chewing an hour earlier; it connects it to you coming home. Put the shoes away, give the dog a job before you leave and a crate or gated room with legal chews while you are out.
Is chewing drywall dangerous?
It can be, from the drywall itself and from what is behind it. Block the spot, check the dog for signs of illness, and treat drywall chewing as a bored or anxious dog that needs a plan now rather than a habit to wait out.
Will more exercise stop the chewing?
For a bored dog, a structured walk and ten minutes of training before the house empties helps more than mileage, because a dog that has worked its brain sleeps. For an anxious dog, exercise does not touch the fear, and the separation work is the fix.
